For me I would say escapism.  I look for a game that immerses me, so that I can take a little vacation from real life.

There are a few main things that make or break an mmo for me during my first hour or so of playing. The first thing is "smoothness of interface and controls." You would be surprised at how many "good" mmos have turned me off because I didn't like the way the menus worked or the hotbar wasn't made right. Next would be the world and atmosphere. I need a meaty world with great lore and room for exploration. And of course the animations are very important to me. The character attacks and movements need to look and feel just right or I won't enjoy it. I don't care if the graphics are dated as long as the animations are good. As far as quests and whatnot, I really don't mind if they are "grindy" because as long as I have a great world to "live in" and friends to play with I don't really care too much.

voted "other", sad the poll doesn't even consider immersion and good controls and movements.

When it's clear, by the level of detail in a game's various systems, that the developer is attempting more of a "world" or a "sim" than just trying to make another "game".

I'll confess to somewhat of a magpie mentality.

My first attraction to an MMO is usually the shiny graphics, or the shiny picture that the hype men manages to put in my head, despite my best efforts to ignore the buggers.

Once I actually get into the game though, my immediate focus is on the control system and how fluid and responsive my little guy is when I'm shuffling him around the screen to his first death.

If I get past that wee hurdle, it's all about the gameplay (which usually equates to the combat mechanics) and whether it is fun enough to retain my interest for any length of time.

    Gameplay.

What I want to know, is what are the features? Good grouping, PvP, leveling, skills, what sort of skills, RvR, classes, are there factions, etc. ?

If the graphics suck then I wont play the game because I don't want to explore a world I think is ugly.

Screw $0.02, here's my one buck fifty:

    - Active GMs. The presence of un-banned spammers is usually a major warning sign that the company either doesn't give a shit about their servers, or that they don't have enough staff to patrol them. Fail.

    - Community tools, NOT simply "community" - people will always be people, you cannot change that. What you CAN do is give the player base a way of managing and separating the asswipes from people who actually want to play. Most games don't even have such basic communication tools like ignore lists. Atlantica Online was one of the recent few games which actually forced positive interaction, and it works. People can't be TRUSTED to behave: you have to force them to. Otherwise you get games filled with bots, farmers, and griefers. Fail.

    - Non-linear equipment increases. FFS, we're not in the era of limited-hardware 8-bit machines any more. Why the f*** are games still using "wood sword -> bronze sword -> iron sword -> gold sword" style of equipment?! This turns all players into carbon copies of each other: "at level X, player from class Y will be wearing Z kind of armor." Not just fail, but EPIC FAIL.

    - REAL PvP. Give us Realm vs Realm, tournaments, skirmishes, defend castle/stronghold, sieges, war, etc. Give us PvP that needs REAL SKILL. None of this stupid mindless free-for-all pk. Gankfests are so 1990s. Fail.

    ...

Well, that's pretty much it. Surprised I didn't mention graphics or sound? That shit is just surface polish. If the game underneath it sucks everything else doesn't matter. I'm even open to class/classless debates. I leave that all up to the creativity (or lack thereof...) of each game company. What I want is a solid base which I've outlined in the points above. I'm sure I've forgotten many other important points, but that's what other people posting here are for.

But in my thread earlier you mentioned your waiting for swtor? pretty bad graphics/combat imo. Heavy on the story aspect though.

My anticipation for TOR is based on a few things.

    1. Bioware. I have nothing but respect for those guys.

    2. Star Wars. Big fan of the IP and setting.

    3. I'm an RPG fan. Story is a big draw for me.

    4. I like to solo or group with a pal or two rather than rely on LFG.

The graphics may not be spectacular, but the picture in my head is pretty shiny.

I won't judge the combat until I've had a go and seen how it "feels".

If a game has classes that I like I'll give it a try.  Pets are a big plus.  And then setting and graphics I guess.  I like dungeons and dragons type settings.

EDIT:  I had high hopes for DDO but they went with Ebberon, a setting I'd never even heard of.  Which was so weird.  When there are so many Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance fans.  I guess they couldn't afford either of those IPs.

The one overriding thing that attracts me to MMORPGs in general is being able to meet and connect with other people, thus, the community. As to what will attract me to invidiual games, probably has a lot to do with races and classes, and obviously gameplay.

Well it isn't just one thing and it can't be just one thing.

    1. Appearence Customization

    2. Skill Cuztomization

    3. PVP Open and Instanced

    4. Raiding

    5. The Genre

Now let me explain a bit. Some games have it so you have to be this gender to be this race or class. I hate that. Some give you 2 hairs, 2 skin colors, 2 faces. Thats way to little. The perfect game for options 1 and 2 is Champions Online.  I want to look different from someone else but what is more important is the fact that say there are 5 Discples.  I don't like it to be like Lineage 2, or Aion where you are the same as every other person of that class. I prefet it to have talent trees, skill tress, attribute adjustments and so on. I like indepth.  There is Requiem. You could say It has this. But actually it doesn't because half the skills blow and so do the dna. So everyone still ends up the same. and who is lucky enough to over enchant or upgrade more doesn't count as cuztomization. Though this being a feature also helps providing the cap isnt insanely high

The best examples of 2 would be... World of Warcraft, Warhammer, SWG, Age of Conan, and Soul of the Ultimate Nation.

    3. Now three is pretty simple. I like being to gank people, make people go WAHHHHHHHH, but not all the time or when everyone is hiding or not out pking, a good bracketed battleground/group/field is great. Wow does that perfectly. Warhammer does it better because you can also level through pvp. Also pvp is important even more so if you can obtain gear through pvp and there is a reason to do it other than making people rage. (it still is alot of fun).

    4. I love mass groups out fighting hard bosses and multiple bosses working as a whole. It provides great endgame content. Warhammer, Wow, Age of conan, eq/2  all did it well. Requiem has some of it for a free game it isnt bad. But another thing linked to this is a loot system. IE rolling. need/greed/master looter. .../roll ftw

    5. This is extremely important even though I wont shy away from fantasy games, I prefer scifi games or modern day, horror games. If I could get a game with all this and have avg-max graphics id be a very happy gamer.

i would say for me is the combination of the world design/graphics/art style.  these all can kinda go together but a world that i just really enjoy is the most important thing to me.   that just really brings me into the game and really increases the immersion factor.

For me it was more about the graphical aspects mixed with good game design. This is mainly because I've played Multi-User Dungeons (MUD) before I jumped into MMO's. Those of you who play MUD's know that a lot of what you play today was represented back then. So the only thing that really brought us over other than servers going down was the graphical or maybe audio aspects of online gaming.

I like the same things as others.

Non linear game play,no cheating, creativity ,but most of all,i enjoy a well designed combat system[no pvp].I appreciate good graphics with good detail,i like a challenge[30 man raids are not a challenge ,just numbers].

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Open world with the ability to go any place.  Changing of the season and weather effects.

    Good UI

    GOOD gameplay

Fun non-repetitive quests.  Interesting caves, dungeons, towers, keeps, castles, and such to explore.  These might contains chests for me to loot.

Non-instanced quests that have timers to prevent over camping.

Random drop looting.  NOT all quests based or craft based gear.

PvP system that I can level in and avoid pve grinding if I choose.

instanced Pvp that is balanced.  No tweaks.  But this allows instant action.

I like death penalties that but that don't constitute XP loss.  Like corpses or reduced stats.

PvP that you drop gear BUT that I can protect an item or two from dropping

Games that have Events and monthly added content.

Characters development that doesn't include classes where I can be anything I want.  Like in FE, DF or AC.

    Aiming not just auto targeting

NO RADAR to see other players in pvp

    Jumping and swimming

Physical - for jumping, knock backs, collision detection, etc.

Player housing in a way that the game still feel alive - like in the major cities to keep them alive

Unique weapons, armor that are not level locked

good community - little to no cheaters - little to no griefers - little to no farmers and macroers

There are several things that i like about games, but, for me the important things, most important? is gameplay but...

    1. Combat system,  ideally i want a game that doesnt rely on automatic attacks, but one that rewards strategy and tactical decision making is good.

however, i dont think games should be just about combat, Trade and crafting is equally important, one of the things i liked so much about SWG pre-cu was there were so many professions that didnt rely on killing things, social based (entertainers/medics etc) and a player based economy, ie, looted or crafted only, no item shops. market/auctionhouses/bazaars etc - FTW!

    2. Graphics, yeah, shiny is good, and as someone else already said, if the world is ugly why would you want to be there.

    3. levels, i dont like games with levels in, levels mean grinding, more often than not, and thats just too repetative.. something thats fun once, isnt the 50th time you've had to repeat it.

    4. Sandbox, Its good to have a worlds with a rich history etc etc. but storylines should be optional, not mandatory..  Luke duking it out with Vader while Leia is watching?  why pick one or the other, shoot em both and go say hello to leia

Out fairness it is Bioware Austin (with many ex-SOE employees) that is making TOR and not the Bioware Canada (forget which city) group that has made all of the other good games. I'm sure you knew this and I'm only pointing it out for others that don't. This is one of the reasons why I stopped giving that particular benefit of doubt to the project and cemented it firmly in the we'll see what they do box. My completely truthful feeling on the game is it will be no better than AoC or WAR with respect to the "gameplay and mechanics gamers expect in an MMO" parts with a heck of a set of 8 read along Dragon Age-esque stories. Whether that is fun or good/bad is up to the individual.

Community is one of the reason for successful games. Yet, sometimes even without good community they got the best quality which is the graphics.
