Norton if you need a full suite of protection (phishing attacks, websites with personalized trojans), and you don't mind paying for it.

Microsoft Security Essentials if you just need something light, does one thing (scan for malware/viruses via signatures), and is free.

That said, 'less you're visiting malicious websites a lot on purpose and you're prone to entering your credit card info in strange places, I'd save money on a full security suite like Norton and just go wtih MSE.

    I'm using Avast!

It's free, at least the home version, and does a great job.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Just do what I do and stream your porn instead of downloading it.  If that fails then you can just go google Kaspersky and try them out.  They have a 30 day free trial, and when I used it I found it worked great and found most of the crap that needed to be found.  I've also heard you can get keys off of ebay for about $18 that will cover 3 separate computers but I've not looked into that.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

ESET Anti-Virus is probably the best one out today. Look into it. It's not free unfortunately.

AVG offers a free version which is pretty solid.

I second Microsoft Security Essentials. Not many people know about it since it's relatively new. It's free, and unlike other free anti-virus software, Microsoft isn't trying to push you to a paid version.

    BitDefender, cheap and good.

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

I've been using the free AVG for years combined with Spybot-SD.  And, of course, Firefox with NoScript enabled.  I have not had a single problem in longer than I can remember.

I have also used MSE and windows defender before without much issue too.

It might be a bit tough navigating to the (latest) results, but this place supposedly tests and rates anti virus programs in a scientific manner. However with that said, I also just use AVG Free and occasionally scan with Spybot. AVG may not always be at the very top of the pack, but it does the job well enough for me. And it's always way up there on the list, it's clean and simple to use, and it's free.

I like Microsoft Security Essentials, nice and lightweight...before that I used AVG, also not bad.

Norton and they have great customer support. They helped me out on many situations.

ESET was the best in 2008, now that its 2009 its different.  Hate to say Norton, but Norton 2009 is good.  I would still avoid Norton due to the last decade of bad scanners.  AVG also up there.

You should get 2 types of anti-virus.  The common ones like AVG and Norton, then a Hueristic scanner like Windows Defender, or malware bytes.  Infact Windows Defender should be enough.  The scanners should not come from the same company.

    Spybot: S&D

    malwarebytes

those are my two favorites that i recommend everyone get without exception.

I was a Panda AV fan for years until it went exclusively commercial. So, I switched to Avast and am pretty content with it. I use it in addition to the Windows Firewall. It updates Virus Definitions throughout the day in the background so there's no need to do so manually like many other AV programs.
