I was one of the few people that played Auto Assault, and I actually liked the concept of the game. I even had fun playing it.
It had quite a number of drawbacks, and they really screwed up in some areas too, but driving around a car tearing stuff up was incredibly enjoyable, expecially being a big truck and driving right into people.
Why have I not seen anything even attempt to fill the car combat gap in MMOs? Twisted Metal was my favorite game growing up and I want to see an MMO where I can drive around and blow stuff up.
I still have the Auto Assault disks, but no server to play on, can someone revive this game or something?

I would like to see a good Road Warrior type MMO also. I don't think alot of companies are hip to the idea. After Auto Assault, most probably assume there isn't much of a market for that. They could be right, I suppose.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
yeah like boarderlands type stuff. but you collect car parts.
The fact that Auto Assault crashed and burned will probably mean there won't be another Car MMO for a long time. Whether the failure was development based or game play based doesn't matter. Investors don't like investing in failed businesses.
Why not expand on this and make a transformers mmo? where not only you can create your own transformer but later modify it with parts and crafting.
tbh, I'd like to see a sandbox type game kinda like EVE except instead of ships you have the different cars, where player control is more important and it's less point and click. Then you could have trucking convoys and fast pirate cars to lay down spike strips. WANT!

I read somewhere that AA was just a co-operative Test by NetDevil and NCSoft of the Game and Physics Engines.
Neither intended it to be a long term. They just wanted to see how everything worked out in a Live game.
Tried: EQ2 - AC - EU - HZ - TR - MxO - TTO - WURM - SL - VG:SoH - PotBS - PS - AoC - WAR - DDO - SWTOR
Played: UO - EQ1 - AO - DAoC - NC - CoH/CoV - SWG - WoW - EVE - AA - LotRO - DFO - STO - FE - MO - RIFT
Playing: Skyrim
Following: The Repopulation

This is true tho. I also played AA and enjoyed it, had everything you need for a good core in a MM, 3 factions, pve all you want without pvp worries, and when you wanted to pvp there was a closed central area (kinda like DAoC), it even had an interesting crafting system. As mentioned above, the only problem was the developers.
Remake this franchise, refine it, and actually make publicity for it, and it might pick up and have some success.

Ever played Interstate '76? That was the grandaddy of AA, TM, and all those cars and guns games. I really wish they'd do another one. It was one of my favorite games of all time...
I'd hoped Auto Assault would have come close, but the car physics just seemed to me like a normal toon minus the ability to strafe... also the scale bugged me; stuff you had to pick up being the same size as your car and stuff. I liked the post apoc world, though.
For car games in general, I think they're gonna have to go this direction. IMO, they've gone about as far as they can go with straight up racing games.
Remember "Interstate 82" ?
Maybe some crazy asian developer will do such a game but "Auto Assault" was from NCSoft so - no that wont happen...

Origin had a fun car game long ago. Auto Duel, back for the C64. You could deliver packages between towns or fight in arena type battles. Written by Lord British.
Don't believe everything that you hear, especially if it originated from the TR tinfoil hat crowd.

Anyone remember seeing this?

Frankly, I personally wouldn't mind driving around firing a Gatling gun on the roof of my car for hours. An MMO like this would be fun. Plus throw in collisions, optional non-combat races (for those carebears!), car customization, etc. and it'd be awesome.
I'd say if it had PvP, insurance on cars and "full loot" of wrecks would make sense.
Look for Dark Wind. It's a turn based car assault/racing game, and the physics are superb. Run races in town for awhile, until you get the hang of it (and the interface, which is partially web- based). I really dug this game, but found the events to sometimes take too long for my liking. The rpg elements are a lot of fun, and if you subscribe (something like 6 bucks a month), you can own your own cars and improve them.
Some game types are better suited to the limited lobby based multiplayer style (ala Diablo). This is probably one of them.
Not that it couldn't be done, but I think it'd be hard having long term subs for such a game.
I don't think long term subs would be hard to attain if done correctly.
I think the problem with Auto Assault was that it was fairly linear up until end game where it was just pvp. And I mean the end game at that point woulda been fine with instanced deathmatchs (which they had for lower levels REALLY FUN), but it was just an open wasteland with some capture points.
But there was no content to keep people entertained at end game. And a game with car battles, especially a focus on pvp needs to have territory control and battlefield objectives if it wants to retain a long term player base. This would push players forward to new areas constantly, and also give people things to take and defend. But not done factionally like Warhammer, more like Global Agenda or EVE.
More "carebear" content could be real fun too. Scripted events were okay in AA, not that great, but if improved they coulda been better. Races are fuuunnnnnn, specially when you can shoot at other players or blow up obstacles.
BTW, anyone know how to set up a private server or if there is one out there for AA? I got a hankering (yes a hankering) to play this game like crazy.

In my opinion, theres only 1 (non space ship) vehicle combat system worth making a multiplayer game out of, and thats Road Rash.

Assuming we believe this shaky "game on a whim" claim (I don't,) it hasn't done "irreparable harm". Did people stop making sci-fi movies just because Waterworld flopped?
"What is truly revealing is his implication that believing something to be true is the same as it being true. [continue]" -John Oliver
Waterworld wasn't the only sci-fi movie released. It had plenty of very profitable predecessors. I'd also have a tough time classifying it as Sci-fi. Being the first auto mmo in an era of with few successful Sci-fi mmos, it will have a big impact on future development. Will another Car based MMO come out, eventually yes. Will Auto Assault influence decisions between now and then, definitely.
