While I want to be positive here... I would say don't set the bar too high on your hopes... also what you see in the trial island (while it will give you a great taste of the game features) it not what the real world 'low level experience' is going to be like...
Once you do get in to the 'real world' then you'll need to try and find people to talk to so you don't loose your mind and also so they might be able to lead you in the right paths, as you make your way to end game, where you'll find the people who do actually play Vanguard.
My tip, don't try Diplomacy.
I was all into the world, exploring, and surviving tough challenges, until Diplomacy.
After Diplomacy, everything was just a step to further my Diplomacy.
I went from adventurer, to diplomat overnight. Diplomacy is addicting, beware Diplomacy!
Nothing excites jaded Grandmasters more than a theoretical novelty
Hmm, judging by the official forum, the December announcment, and posts around here, the game is pretty much over? I know that there are always doom cryers, but it looks like I seriously am too late to the party.
Oh well, i'll give it a go and see what it's like. I really miss good team based large world MMOs.
Close to the end of the trial, you will get a quest to learn and use the flying mount, was fun.....Then after that you can use the flying mount to find the final dungeon of the trial. It's a lot of fun flying into the mountains to find it, then you land on a landing pad before entering. If you don't already have a group, you should be able to find two or three people on the landing pad to help.
I'm bringing this point up, because it could be easy to miss out on this, as it's the best part of the trial.
So I have run into a coupe problems.
I have an ATI 4850 HD, 6 Gigs of RAM, Quad core processor.
I get these vertical scrolling blank spots in my graphics, sometimes changing screen resolution fixes it, sometimes not, I have played with performance and graphic tweaks..
I also have no sound! WTH is up with that? My audio is fine except with the game.
So far it seems Ok, graphics are a bit dated, seems confusing finding quests. There is a lot of info to check out when starting, loads of stats, types of game play, etc.
So I wrote a whole post and then there was a problem with the site.
So I'll condense.
Vanguard is more about exploration, huge open world. Don't worry about going from quest to quest. you will find them when you will find them.
It is a creaky game. Has a beautiful world. really. Avatars leave something to be desired.
If you can shift your paradigm a bit and just explore and take it all in then it might be the game for you.
I would't worry about doom and gloom posts. The game is still around and people are still playing it so just have fun with it.
Go to the official forums to get tech help and to find a noob friendly guild.

Game is likely to shut down by next year based on the news announcements, sure you want to put time into it? They have basically halted all work on future game content. Still a fun game, but I couldn't bring myself to play a game I knew was to shut down soon.
Yes, I have 14 days to play around in it, so far it seems cool. Once I get the technical stuff worked out I can get into it more.
As to it being shut down soon, that may be, but if I enjoy it, I'll play as long as it's around. If not, no bigie I suppose.
The graphic issues and no sound are quite annoying though.
Do everything the Isle of Dawn has to offer, all quests in adventuring, harvesting, crafting and diplomacy. I think you'll be amazed at how deep and fun Vanguard is.
I wouldn't worry about Silius's post, in fact it might benefit newer players. The uproar is from long term players, like myself, who were really looking forward to, and preparing for, the release of Halls of Shattered Souls and Alternate Advancement. It would take many months, or even a year or two, for a new player to get to the point where they are worried about more high-end raid and group content.
I loved my blood mage, and I think that it is one of the most unique classes that I've had the fortune to play in fantasy MMO. Big kudos to whoever designed it.
Diplomacy was an unexpected surprise. For the right person, it its enough of a game on its own.
Crafting was enjoyable, despite being a drawn-out, detailed process. Since it was done well enough, I didn't mind the effort that I had to put in. And getting to actually cut down trees? That alone was amusing enough
The trial island will definitely show you what Vanguard could offer. But once you leave the island, you get a hard dose of reality. And that reality is this: you'll be left largely hearing the sound of your own voice.
I guess most of the active player base (whatever remains of them) is doing their thing at the level cap, and that's that. The population density at the lower levels was, in my experience, extremely thin. If I saw anyone else, it was enough to make me stop and get excited...and then discouraged when they quickly vanished.
I encourage people to try the game out, since it really has all the markings of a game that "could have been." Just don't get your hopes too high for your ability to get anything out of it in the long term.
Edit: apologies for the lack of paragraphs. The editor here decided to remove them o.O
That's a good attitude and my feelings exactly. I play because it's fun, not because it will be around in 5 years.
