Thoughts on STO/OB

If you check my history, I've been mostly down on this game. It's not what I wanted, I wanted another Pre-CU SWG, only Star Trek would do in absence of Star Wars.

The open beta is lagggggggy. After I finished the tutorial, which is where I understand the game gets incredibly boring, I hit my first set of newby quests. I was to rescue some chic from whatever disaster had befallen her. I headed out, killed a couple more bad guys and then beamed down to her ship. This is where it hit me, I've seen this episode before!

A quick background on me and Star Trek.

SKIP THIS IF YOU DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT MY BACKGROUND WITH STAR TREK
I watched the originals in syndication and had a good laugh, but also enjoyed them at the time. I watched TNG because it was a cool Sci-Fi show that came on in the afternoons. I really enjoyed Voyager more than any show, especially when seven showed up. Yeah, I'm that shallow. I never really got in to DS-9, mostly because it wasn't on at a normal time in my location. Enterprise, same thing, although I did go back and watch the entire show in a weekend and really enjoyed it.

So overall, I do like Star Trek, but I couldn't tell you one episode title from any of the shows, well, not more than a couple of titles anyway. So to me, Star Trek is an established sci fi, yet iconic, experience.

Having wasted that much time telling you my perspective, back to my story.

I beamed down to the ship and realized I was in an episode I somewhat remember from one of the shows. If the lag hadn't been so horrible, I probably would have appreciated it a little bit more, but I did notice I was excited in combat. Using the different weapons (phaser vs phase rifle) and different stances and movement. It was pretty fun. It wasn't as "action" oriented as DDO, but it was more than most MMO's. I also like that I had an away team with me so that I had the much needed backup. This felt more exciting than normal combat in an MMO as well. So the action was there. The excitement was there.

Curse you lag! I don't know, can cryptic produce a lag-free experience? I seem to remember CO doing this in OB as well.

My ship is the USS Cleopatra NCC-252500, so far, STO is actually fun for me.

I agree the game feels laggy. Probably because of the OB and so many people joining in (I havent played the CB). The ground part of the game also feels clunky, much more than Champions combat, that adding an additionnal layer to the "lagginess" feeling. Space feels better however (if you expect not having a real 3D movement/gameplay).

On the other side the graphics are really nice, and the Star Trek atmosphere is very well done. I need more playing time to comment on it further, as the OB has only started. Only time will say if it's fun, and if it keeps being fun :)

Eh...it's okay.  Not really concerned about the lag or the rubberbanding myself since ob just started.  It's annoying but at this point not all that surprising.  If it's still this way towards the end might be a concern.

As for the actual game, I'm finding space combat to be rather fun.  I never could get into Eve for whatver reason but I find this game kind of entertaining flying around and enjoying how space combat is utilized.  Takes a bit of getting used to but once you get the ship maneuvering down it's fun.

The ground portion of the game seems rather awful to me.  Granted I've only done  a couple missions so far but it just feels uninspired and rather cheap.

I think they would have been better off concentrating on one area or the other myself rather than making a hybrid.  All in all though the game is better than I thought it would be.  Nothing spectacular by any means but not terrible either.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

That's good to hear, hopefully they can resolve the current issues then.

    Aye,

The game might not be the most revolutionary game nor the greatest MMO ever made, but its still good fun.

I can easily see this game being someones main MMO or even an off MMO when they need a break from what they are playing.

    I like it :)

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Stopped when I read that. If all it takes is a blond with big tits in a tight dress to turn a media into something good then really, how much can your opinion be worth?

It is like asking a porn star what she feels about the situation in middle east. Yeah sure she could surprise you and say something worthwhile but what are the chances?

The word "especially" brings attention to something, in particular, that in this case added value to something I was already enjoying. But then again, you probably stopped reading a long time ago.

I've played a little nit of the OB, but the disconnects and lag have been horrendous the last couple of days. However it does seem like it might be a fun game once everyone gets out of the starter areas.

It was a bit rough for me yesterday, but I just had an 8-hour session with virtually no problems. Mind you, I was in space almost all of the time. The ground engine seems to be much less polished.

Seven is the best character in all of star trek franchise, followed closely by the borgs as a whole  imo.

The big tits are a bonus.

    You are being too closed-minded!

It means he values aesthetic quality; his opinion may be more valuable than others' in terms of the asthetics of the game.  Like you insinuate though, you may want to read someone else's view about game mechanics or depth.

Everyone's opinion CAN be valuable, no matter what their background or IQ.  You just have to know what they are pre-disposed to like and dislike so that you can place proper value on the opinion as it would compare to your own.

He likes the big-uns, that means he may have quite a bit of insight in terms of graphics and performance and whatnot :)

I don't even think she was the hottest regular character on a Trek show. That would be Hoshi from 'Enterprise' or Uhura from TOS.

As for best character - I'd vote for all the TOS regulars except Chekov, Geordi, and Doctor Phlox ahead of Seven.

Often times, online games are deployed to server farms to run on when released to market (going live).  They usually have more bandwidth, and newer/faster servers to run on at that time.

The costs can be high though, so some companies will house betas on their own gear so as not to go bankrupt before going gold and release to market, where they start getting higher income flows.

If it's unplayably laggy; I would be very concerned, as it is more likely due to bad netcode. In all fairness, it also has to be pointed out that in beta, the developers will be running monitors and logging activity much much more heavily in order to spot bugs.  This puts a great strain on the server, and can result in a good deal of lag.   If it's a bit laggy, that's to be expected and should, in large part, be corrected at release.

At release, I would expect the game to have similar lag issues as CO has, since the base is same/similar.  If CO is ok for the most part, I'm sure STO will perform that way also.

I'm having a lot of fun in the game so far, really my only complaint is I have no clue what i'm doing to be honest lol. I picked science, but as far as skill sets and advancements go I really have no clue... same goes for the bridge officer. Does anyone have a really useful website that explains all of these?
