The game lets you create two alts. Does anyone does it? The fact that only one character can learn skills at any given time makes it sort of superfluous no? because if you're not learning something on your main to learn it on a alt, you might as well learn it on the main in the first place and, in doing so, keep advancing that one character.
I have to admit though, having those extra character slots sure make for some amazing forum avatar creator
Do any older players have anything to say on this?

The extra alt slots are outstandingly useful. Want to know what's on the other side of that gate...?
Give me liberty or give me lasers
Yeah I considered that. Thats probably why gate campers destroy anyone warping in to their space, no questions asked. But you are right, that is a very good use for them.

alts are good to spy on prices in other regions. Always keep one near jita for example.
They are very useful, once you get around to the idea that amount of SP really doesnt matter that much. For example you can make a alt that you keep in a market hub, who sells and buys stuff for you. Often you have to adjust sellorders cause the market changed, would be a pita having to fly all the way every time.
A scout is another useful thing they can do. Living in a lowsec bordersystem? Have your alt in the highsec system next jump with his clonestation set there, he will scout for you every time you have to enter the system in his trusty velator for you anytime. And people wont even know its you looking wether it safe, they might guess someone is looking wether its safe, but they wont know who.
Train basic manufactoring/laboratory skills, only takes a couple of days and you almost double your capacity to use these services.
While you can only train one skill at a time on your account, its not necessarily quit such an asset having all your assets in one basket as it seems. Imagine your a combat pilot and a producer, two completly different skillsets. Now you decide to go to 0.0 or lowsec or wherever, now you either have to travel alot back and forth, use jumpclones which you can only do once in a while, or have to give up one activity for the other.
If you trained you production skills on one of your alts you still have the same combined abilities, but you can be in two places at once.
Is Jita really the place to be if you're going to be doing alot of buying and selling?

Imho jita can be very confusing. Yes you want a place with lots of transactions, but jita really is pushing things and the competion there is fierce. Personally i would use a lesser tradehub, easier to spot bargains and quite a bit less competiton.
1400 people in one system really doesnt make for a pleasent place.
Alts become useful when you've gotten one char to a nice place and can walk from pumping it full of SP that will just make death cost more. My main is around that place right now, with very good skills all around for piloting my BS. It's not all maxed out, but it's good enough, and clone costs are not extremely painful. It also allows me to start messing with an alt halfway across the galaxy and try out other setups. Thinking this time around I might try sticking to frigate-class ships on the alt or go for logistics/support types. Always good to have a range of things available, and piling it all on one char isn't the best idea really.

With a couple days of training time, you can make a decent trade alt/ hauler alt with some extra lab slots to boot.
Very useful.
