Sleeper MMO coming out of Korea: Mabinogi Heroes

NovusodNovusod Member UncommonPosts: 912

Open Beta on Mabinogi (Mob-in-ogee) Heroes started just a few days ago on January 21, 2010 but it is all in Korean so it is hard to find any English info on this game. From the trailers and footage I have seen Mabinogi Heroes is certainly not a cookie cutter WoW clone or standard point and click Korean grind fest. I have not been excited about a new release MMO in a very long time and this game seems to be the innovator this stagnating genre needs to break out of the rut.

Check out the trailer here:

Also some good game play clips on Youtube.

I could certainly see this game shaking things up in the coming months when an English version is released.

    I'm following this game closely.

It seems like a slower version of C9.

    It looks awesome though.

Is it anything like Mabinogi, from Nexon?

If not, I could care less.

If it is, is it following a similar formula?

It's a realtime action rpg. I haven't played mabinogi, but I highly doubt it's the same.

This game is really interesting Combat-Wise. From what I've seen the combat uses huge amount of Physics you can kick huge objects on enemies, push boulders, pull monsters with chain, carry objects and throw them at the enemies..etc. I know many games implemented this before but the difference with Mabinogi Heroes is it is done with perfection.

However, everything I saw is just Combat Fest so am not sure if it's only about "go smash monsters" kind of game. But even if it was, I would still play it.

  • Here comes a rant.

It's not fair all they are releasing to the English speaking market is rehashed versions of games that are over 5 years outdated in Korea. Mabinogi heroes (has ZERO to do with Mabinogi) is an amazing game. But will we ever see it? No, at least not within the next two or three years. It's the same with every other decent game the Koreans make, Tera, maybe in 3 years, C9 probably never, Blade & Soul, probably 3 years after the Korean release. Everything the Korean developers are localizing into English are garbage games that AREN'T EVEN POPULAR OR CONSIDERED GOOD IN KOREA.

shouldnt worry about it,  Rag2 doesnt seem to have come to the west so its not assured that any korean game would make it over here.

maybe someone needs to step up to the plate and create some original ideas other than ripping off and recycling whats allready out there. So until then. this is what we have to deal with. also if you didnt know about this game you must have been living under a rock.

I'm quite sure Blade & Soul will reach us, if not at the same time, then a little later. But it won't be that late, seeing as it's from NCsoft.

What sets Mabinogi Heroes part from C9 and other newish Korean games and makes it an innovator is its' environmental physics. A large part of the combat involves picking up objects and using them as improvised weapons. Even enemies themselves can be tossed at other enemies or used as meat shields to block attacks. The characters interact with a non static environment that changes as the battle progresses such as movable boulders, trees that can be cut down, collapsible fences and small buildings. Objects and enemies shoved into fires will catch on fire. Larger enemies can be tripped up, tied up, and ham-stringed where the equivilant of stat based debuffs in other games becomes a tangible visual encounter in Mabinogi Heroes. Boss mobs can be seen limping arround and bleeding after beening hit and then eventually cowering before being worn down and killed in the fight. Players themselves also can suffer from too much physical abuse with swords snaping and armor shredding to rags.

Much of the character animation was done with motion capture  which adds to overall visual effect of the game. Some of these videos show a polished game that I want to play right now even if it is Korean.

The original Mabinogi has a lot a of mini games but I was only able to find info on two mini games in Mabinogi Heroes. One is a multi player fishing game and the other involves making a camp fire, cooking, and social interaction.

Nexon made mention that there would be a North American release of this game in 2010 but no specific date was given.

TERA is going to be released in 2010 on the western market, and more than likely also Blade and Soul(could be 2011 though).

TERA has already held a North American focus group test to accomodate the game for western players and it's scheduled for release this year.

I'm getting fed up with the MMO genre in general, and not because there's anything wrong with the games, it's just that other players can't seem to enjoy themselves anymore and feel the restless need to convince me that everything is grind.

I swear to God that everything is categorized as grind these days...

You can't PvE or Raid because someone says it's grindy.

You can't PvP because it's grindy.

You can't gather resources or craft because that's grindy.

Is there anything you people don't consider grind? Maybe moving around? Or is that on it's way into the dictionary under "grind" as well.

It has to be the stupidest f'n catchphrase used to capture a player's rampant disgust with ANYTHING. Go grind your asscheeks together and start a fire with it.

Reason being is because there is a huge huge huge amount of code written in Korean which

    (A) many people cant translate worth a crap

    (B) of those translators there are even fewer that can actually write code

and (C) they have to go through publishing companies which have to re-write the code in english, do all of the translations, go through many meetings to make sure that the maker of the game and the publisher are on the same page for what the game is going tobe when its released here and then go through the testing phases with an enlgish speaking clientel.

You sir, deserve a cookie for the most epic post of today!

I agree with you completely. I don't get it how people think they can stay interested in a game that doesn't have endless progression for more than a month or so, it just doesn't work like that. So when they play a game that takes too long to for their tastes to play they call it grindy, when it's a game they think is too short they call it a shit game. It confuses me endlessly as to why people want to play the MMO genre if they don't want a game experience that lasts months/years even if it's a little repetitive.

All of you grind whiners, go play your god damn single player/regular multiplayer games for 2 weeks and you'll be bored and come back here to whine.

Blade & Soul will indeed reach the US, the question is when. From what I've read, it sounds like NCsoft is planning for Blade & Soul to be their replacement for Aion in the US market, once Aion becomes stale. So, it will probably have quite a bit to do with how Aion's future takes fold. I'm sure NCsoft won't release Blade & Soul to the US market until Aion has lost it's appeal.

Ok...MMO's are very grindy.  In fact, it is their nature.

Let's examine the typical work-week, the Mon-Fri 9-5 job.  You more than likely follow a certain routine, you get up at a certain time, do things in a certain order etc. to get prepared for work.  Than you get to your job, sit in your little cubicle turn on your computer and get to work.  Most of your job probably uses a couple of core skills.  That is to say, the MS Office Suite.  You spend most of your day writing reports, making power points, and filling out spreadsheets for your job.  This is occasionally broken up by a conference where you actually SHOW what you toil endlessly on to everyone else.  You will most likely do this day in, day out for the rest of your life, that is to say, continuously do repetitive mundane tasks for hours on end.  But hey, at least you're getting paid, and hopefully all the crap you're doing is helping the company you work for.  This is what we call the 9-5 Grind...now follow me on this one.

Now, let's examine the current stereotypical MMO, and basis for all comparisons, WoW.  First off, like a job, you start as the coffee boy, or in this case, level 1.  You have to continuously stick your neck out as well as continue on with your usual job to work your way up to a real job, which we will call end-game raiding.  So, you go out there, and you quest.  Hello FEDEX BOY!  Get 10 of that, come back, slaughter 5 of these come back, the only thing really changing is the name of the NPC and the name of your target.  You do this, for say a month or two, being broken up by the management every once and a while with an instance or two, giving you a "taste" of what you're supposed to be working towards.  Eventually, you hit max level, 80 in this case, and you get to do that "end-game content" you were promised.  So you've joined a new guild(company) and you're all ready to do those kickass dungeons you've heard about.  And then the truth hits you; you are going to run those same dungeons over and over again until you get enough items to run the next dungeon, and then the next, and the next.  And Blizzard, in all their sadistic pleasure, will continue to release new instances, ensuring you do this for the rest of your life.  And unlike a job in real life, you aren't getting paid for this.  Quite the contrary, you are PAYING them to subject yourself to this.  Man, life's great, huh?

This isn't a sleeper at all. I swear I've seen a new topic or two about or containing this game every week since it's NA localization announcement...

I've been following this game for a long time now. It, in my opinion, looks like a lot of fun. I only have one complaint.

So far, the classes have been gender-locked. I DESPISE gender locking. I like the look of magic in this game, yet mages HAVE to be female. I sincerely hope this changes in the future, but deep down I know it probably wont.
