I just can't comprehend the mentality of some players...Honestly...
Why do men play female characters in MMO's?
The most common response I get to this question is....
Well, if I have to spend hours playing a game I'd rather watch the butt of a female than a male character...
Huh? I don't go for it. First of all who says you have to play. Second, if your purpose for playing a game is to watch a the one inch butt of a female toon run around a computer screen...I think you have a serious issue.
Another that someone, that plays gender correct, told me that they think men do this in hopes of getting free gear and stuff from other male players. Now that one I can believe. Sorry saps that they may be.
Now a lot of you will probably come up with, "Well what about women that play male characters?"
I think they may do it to avoid being hit on by the probable large percentage of males that do; do that in MMO's.
Anyway here's the thing...is not the character you play supposed to be your alter ego? Haha...guess these men actually desire to be female.
Getting old is mandatory...growing up is optional.

I'm male in real, I'll tell my reasons sometimes I use female (rarely but happens):
1- Race that is only female but cool looking sorta mithra in FFXI or the fox race in neosteam
2- Certian classes clothes suite more female then male to me, exp priest and such
3- Animation most of the time look different on female then male for example how blood elves go when in stealth in contrast with a human in stealth if you know what I mean.
4- Hate it when male are bulky and women are thing but latley this is not happening much thank god I hate using a bulky man as my character I want it normal or a little muscular but not on steriods!
5- The one you said yourself :P usually female characters are more aided when need help and or given free stuff to try and make them impressed with their generosity lol.
You dont understand why males play female characters in role-playing games? Well, if the italic text didnt do it for you, then nothing will. You dont have to understand it. Just understand this: different people have different tastes and motivations. If you cant understand that then I think you have a serious issue.
Honestly, why do you care?
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
When i first join a game i like to play a female because more people are willing to work with me and help you learn the ropes then ill scrap that toon and make a male. Yes it messed up with me using a female avatar to learn a game from people but guys just feel the need to help a lonely female who just started lol.
This subject has been discussed too much on the internet already.... also quite possible you're just trolling. Similarly I could ask you are you gay if you like to play male toons. It's all about insecurity. A secure person doesn't care what gender they play, what others think of it and certainly doesn't judge others for playing opposite gender avatar. Some play their characters as their virtual self, others play them as characters that have nothing to do with themselves or real life.
Why digging up that old rotten corpse of a topic again?
a) that people who are sexually attracted to women find the shape of a female body pleasant to look at is normal. If that is a real body they look at, a photo, a painting or an image on the computer is irrelevant. If you want it to look pleasant or not is irrelevant either. It's deeply burried inside your genes since millions of years, and that a few members of our current society don't like it doesn't make it vanish
b) it's a computer game, do what you want
c) even if it's no computer game do what you want. I live in Cologne which is the most open minded city of the open minded country I'm living in. Several times a year are thousands and several ten thousands of people running around disguised, and many many of them wearing costumes making them look like the opposite gender. They have fun, it's great. Why care?
d) the only people who have problems with guys playing female chars in MMOs are 1) very old fashioned people, like really old fashioned (but not too old fashioned since a hundred years ago boys were dressed in pink and girls in blue) 2) religions people who think that some omnipotent beeing assumes it to be of importance wether some people wear pants or skirts 3) people who are mentally very young and for who the whole concept of "gender" is scary, or 4) people who think that MMOs are actually no games but dating software
Some of my chars are male, some are female. I choose what I like and what I think looks best in that game.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
I do not fathom why you would care who is behind a character. I don't.

If I pick up a woman in a bar and take her home...I don't wanna find out she's packing meat...were you offended? Must have hit a nerve huh? HEHE
Didn't you understand this?
Anyway here's the thing...is not the character you play supposed to be your alter ego? Haha...guess these men actually desire to be female
Oh...that applies to the others above as well...
Also didn't know it was such a popular topic. If so...why would you even comment?

not everyone requires their avatar to represent their actual sex.
A male playing a female character no more desires to be a woman than a male playing a tomb raider game.
You could use the converse logic in that a guy who plays a guy secretly wants to look at a guys butt all day long therefore yadda, yadda yadda.
For a good many people it really doesn't matter.

So you play computer games in the hopes of finding a woman to have fun with?
Computer games would be the last place I'd go to to pick up a woman (and I say that in all honesty even though I like female geeks).

Ah, so now I get it. What you dont like is trying to cyber a female character online only to find out she's a fat guy named Tony. Ok, glad we cleared that up. You're just a sad little man.

Yes, thankfully this trend is starting to die down, I agree. I was fearing it would be with us forever.
Ah, ok, that is clear. You play games to pick up woman. Thanks for explaining it.

I guess it's just me, but when I meet/befriend someone in-game, I try to build a mental picture of them in real life. Obviously, the first deciding factor is gender. It helps that a girl character in-game is actually a girl in real life. If not, oh well - as long as they tell me they're really a guy, I don't get the wrong mental picture. After all, don't you want to know what your friends look like (at least to an extent)? Unless you actually meet them, you can only go by what they tell you, so the more they "lie", the worse it is. I'm not saying guys should have to play male characters in game, but I'm saying that it'd be nice if they all did. Just for clarity.
Came up in another thread, too. I said that if someone played a "black" character in game, I'd ask them if they were black in real life. Someone responded and said, "Why would you ask them if it doesn't matter?" Obviously, race is a touchy subject. But I replied with the same logic I stated above.

Not exactly...if a friendship builds through playing and goes further so be it...but I like to know that the female I'm playing with is actually a female.
Getting old is mandatory...growing up is optional.
I'm a male, and when I first started gaming I picked all male characters; however I later realized that there are often a lot of downsides to picking all male characters. I believe I was picking male characters for about 10 years, and then decided that I'll mostly pick female characters at some point (I believe it was when a friend suggested I try picking a female character in EQ so I'd get "treated better"). Anyway here is a list of possible reasons for picking a female character:
1. Female characters often have smaller hitboxes due to smaller body frames. This is really apparent in some shooters. This gives you a small edge when playing a female character in types of games with hitbox inequalities.
2. In other games (EX: Fighting Games) females are usually faster and more agile than the male characters and are often good picks for players who enjoy using those type of characters over powerhouses. The same could be said in MMOs about genderlocking where sometimes the class you want to play in a genderlocked MMO is going to be of the opposite sex.
3. It allows you to dress up and care about your character's looks without feeling less masculine. It's considered "gay" (and I really hate using that word) to spend a lot of time caring about a male character's looks; however every straight male enjoys looking at attractive women.
4. For the obvious reason stated above of not wanting to look at a male character's butt all day long.
5. On the reverse side, females will often pick a male character to not be harassed by males in game.
6. Sometimes you might have a RP personality in mind that is more suited for a female.
7. Sometimes animations are simply better one gender for whatever reasons.
8. You may get treated better (especially by male characters). It's sad, but true. Even after you make it clear you are male.
We are playing RPG's here. If I have a character concept in my mind, whether it be male or female, I'm going to use it. The point of an RPG is to leave reality for a bit, to get away to another world. And for those that need "clarity", do I also need to tell you I'm human when I'm playing an Orc. This argument is ridiculous and only matters to those who want to "cyber".
Yes...exactly....I do have a male friend that plays a female dwarf in DDO and we have a great relationship...I always tease him about, why do you play that dumpy dwarf dyke toon..
Getting old is mandatory...growing up is optional.
I didn't know you had a choice of being a human or Orc in real life, too. Sorry for all those Orcs out there. Gender is a variable, whether or not you're an Orc in real life is not.
I personally will play both genders in most MMOs. The reasons are varied and already listed by other posters in this thread. Some of us are comfortable with our real life sexuality that playing the opposite sex in a game doesn't really mean much other than being able to play a different role for a change. To say that men that play women in RPGs secretly want to be women is absurd in the extreme. Sounds like to me at least the OP had a cyber-relationship that ended up being a guy or is just extremely homophobic. Either way it does not reflect anything on a person in real life what they choose to role-play in a game. After all the whole point of role-playing is to be someone different than you are in real life.

The creepy thing is not men playing as female avatars, but that anyone should come to an mmorpg and consider it matters...you have to think what on earth they expect to get out of playing a game. The internet is the great leveller, race, height, gender, nationality they are all irrelevent unless we choose to intrude them on anyone else....whatever your avatar you dont know who the other person is and you should use the advantages of that distance to moderate your behaviour and just setlle into the business of having fun.

I don't know, are you?
That's the thing, it really doesn't matter. If you feel uncomfortable playing a female avatar or that you just prefer having a male avatar represent you then fine and more power to you. Nothing wrong with that.
But you are ascribing too much meaning to a person who plays an avatar that is opposite their own.
Just know that not everyone feels that their avatar has to represent them and it has nothing to do with their sexuality. That is the answer to your question.

i don't really have a reason on playing a female or male toon, usually depends on my race and class.

If the male avatars look dumb I play a female. I was never able to play a male avatar in guild wars because I didn't like their male avatars.
