Its pretty simple, the MMO genre has been getting watered down for years trying to be more edgy and to attract bigger crowds, well the bigger crowd is FPSers and Assholes practicaly one in the same. I'm a realist so I certainly see exactly what you say though I'm sure many people will try to defend the actions of many mmoer's. I've been a vocal member of the mmorpg community for quite sometime but as I tend to feel the way you do I make it a point to not bash games because I don't like them but I have been known to rally against companies who I think play fast and loose with our trust such as Funcom,SOE but I still make it a point to avoid getting into running debates with fans of those products as I stated if they find it fun to each there own. But I have seen countless people try to convince others that oh Cryptic is horrible, Turbine is the devil incarnate and don't get me started on the whole EA talk, and while some will come on here and try to play the high road by claiming "EA is evil because they overwork people yadayadayada" and those same people don't care if they put those EA employees out of work with the criticism they throw out either so I'm not buying it.
Unfortunately being a know it all seems to be the "in thing" nowadays and as such everyone has to post as if they have some kind of insight the rest of us are just too naive to notice without there help. Luckily enjoying the new devil on the block STO has given me a bit of a reprieve from checking the forums for my news which is a good thing because a few days of reading the posts by some of these unhappy and seemingly bitter know it alls is enough to turn one that way too (Trust me I know I've been there).
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
They are jerks cause they can talk trash on the internet and not get a beat down.
In reality they are very quiet and never get out of line with people that will put them in their place.

Hahahaha this is the funniest post I've read, I hate to say it the biggest jerks I notice are not the newbies getting into mmo's but the disgruntled old vets of games years past. And the point I'm making really is that's a lame excuse to imply mmo's are getting a trash community from anywhere but the inside because again that just ain't true. Most of the prevelant negativity I've noticed from mmo players have been going on since SWG atleast which is before most of the players you claim are to blame for the current crop of problem children in the community.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Because MMOs are comprised of internet folk who in general are huge jerks because "lol I'm anonymous! Now to act like an enormous douchehandle and think only of myself 8D!" MMOs are also a big investment of both time, money, and to some represent certain ideologies so they easily form "camps" for fanboy wars. Unfortunately, the few people who would even bother to think pragmatically in the first place are usually drawn into the frenzy by that point.
Short and simple version. MMO gamers are jerks because most people are sadly huge jerks.
Anonimity is really no excuse for me to act like that. I figure I'm polite, and use reasoning irl why would I change that simply because I'm anonymous? Maybe what other posters have said is most likely... that most of these supposed "jerks" are that way because perhaps irl they might be afraid to be argumentative in very negative ways.
Besides, because of our online names are different from our real ones doesn't mean we are entirely anonymous. Usually if i remember someone for obvious "jerk" behaviour, I tend to remember that online name and put him/her on my ignore list. So in a way we're not really anonymous. The only way to get away with such behaviour is to constantly make new accounts over and over just to annoy people, but I hope no one actually does that as that is so time/energy consuming, and in the end you'll probably end up getting all those accounts banned.
I'd rather my semi-anonymous name garner a good reputation from others in whatever community I'm participating in (either in-game or just in a forums... as in here). By holding myself to a higher standard of communication, then in a way I pay tribute to others here by taking forums on a more serious notes, and in turn, take seriously the posts (well except for those ignored due to "jerkiness" bahaviour ofc.)
Okay the title is a little all encompassing and not really fair. For that matter the jerk title applies pretty equally to computer gamers in general but the question is still valid. What I mean is that gamers do not seem to be able to let others contently enjoy their game without feeling the need to bash something they personally do not like.
LMAO, you think only computer gamers do this? How quaint. People bash EVERYTHING, be the subject someone else's choice in music, football teams, political views, and even someone's country of origin - you name it. We may as well live with it, because it isn't going to change any time soon.
