WoW players raise $1.1 million for Make-A-Wish

Orange County's Gadgetress has updated her tech blog with news that WoW players recently raised over 1million dollars for the Make-A-Wish foundation.

A very nice and surprising result for all.

On Tuesday, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime handed a $1.11 million check to the charity that grants wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“We’re very happy with the amount,” said Mike Morhaime, president of the Irvine game developer. Was he surprised? “We stopped making predictions about WoW a long time ago.”

The proceeds came from the sale of a Pandaren Monk, a virtual pet for the game. The creature sold for $10 between Nov. 4 to Dec. 31. Half the price was donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That means 222,000 players bought the pet.

“I was shocked. That’s a lot of virtual pets,” said Frank Pearce, the game’s executive director.

A fantastic achievement, well done to all involved and who donated!

Well if all the people complaining on mmorpg.com had there way when WoW began to sell these pets, that would be a million $ less for Make-a-wish.

Yeah, it is good to see the revenue generated from the pets went to a great cause.

I think it's cool, it's a good cause.  See something like this I don't mind, because 1) WoW has tons of pets available ingame for you to obtain already, I know because my g/f is quite fanatical about it and she has over 80 pets collected. and 2) seeing some of the money go to a good cause is a great thing.

The alternative is what SOE does... put most of the pets on station cash, more pets available there than you can get ingame.  The money you spend into say, EQ1, don't even go into EQ1 development.  But rather money is being used to develop other SOE titles such as Free Realms or fund their TV commercials.

There's no comparison.  WoW has RMT done right because they make sure there's more than enough pets/mounts ingame than you can obtain using cash, plus they donate a portion of it to a good cause.
