Ultima Online Mage reagents.

JastivJastiv Member Posts: 2

I always used to hate Ultima's mage reagent system and running out of the critical reagents at the wrong time. Then you could always carry extra and overload yourself. I liked it when UO impliment arcane gem charges and lrc armor.   I've been wonding what people thought of the reagent system for magery.  I have not seen it in many other games. Most games it just uses mana.  I think  that should need reagents for summons, or they either don't show up or unhappy (whatever that means.)   I feel that using reagents was to much for simple damage spells, but makes a lot of sense for summons.

Basically it is all about gameplay. Your spells needing reagents means that your players need look out and plan ahead.

These days I am actually glad if a game includes arrows and not just unlimited ammunition.

For UO reagents should have stayed and lower reagent cost never be introduced.

I was and am still pro-limited reagents/arrows. I always enjoyed the added challenge it brought to the gameplay. Also, it helped balance the fighter and mage classes back when there was open pvp and looting before trammel. It wasn't fair that a melee class would be risking their weapon, armor, and possibly their shield when a mage would only risk a robe. This way a player had to be smart and tactful in how many reagents they chose to carry when involved in pvp or even just dungeon crawling.

The addition of LRC to UO is one of the things that was simply removing any amount of actual challenge to the game and made it much easier for people to implement cheating. By having regs, it not only made the game more interesting and keeping an amount of depth to the gameplay, but you didn't really see people recall mining because it was just too expensive and not worth the time.

back in the old days regs were the best loot.  If you were red and couldnt get in to town the best way to get regs was to find some one casting a spell, and "borrow" the regs from their dead body.  It added a nice edge to the game because if some one asks if you can spare a black pearl you never know if he just ran out and needs to recall, or checking to see if you have any regs on you so it would be worth killing you.

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.

I loved this system in the game.  Sure it was annoying at times, but it made the player plan a head, and think, not just click click click.  It brought strategy to the game.  It also brought risk because if you died with a lot of regs on you, you had to replace them:(  I personally stocked a lot of regs in my house and bought them whenever I was in town and found them to be available.  I loved the system, it was actually one of my favorite parts of the game.

Exactly my view.  It made you plan ahead.  I got my magery up on my my blacksmith/miner so I could recall around to get to my ore.  I had a beatle with me that could carry my loads when I was near my house.

I am seriously thinking of going back.  If i have to get one more frost emblem in WOW, I think I will kill myself.
