Ok, here is the scoop. I am getting tired of mmorpg's, been playing them since 1997. I am looking for a building type game with very little fighting in it.
I picked up "Sins of a Solar Empire" the other day. A beautiful game, but a little too much fighting in it. It got a great review. so I am playing it now.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good exploring and city building game? I have "Spore", but it is too cutsy for me. Basically, I just want to sit back, build and create a thriving community. Any suggestions?
Thanks all

Cities XL is straight building. Of course not everyone likes the game. It has a bit of Sim City to it, with some different takes on certain things. I tried it, and found it entertaining, but not nearly as good or engrossing as Sim City.
The RTS mod for fallout 3 rocks:).

You can build cities, you have to keep track of citizen happiness food stocks. You can search the land for objects for resources(excellent use of debris piles and old cars). You set up trade between towns, you never even have to lift a gun, your citizens (who you can train as soldiers/builders/craftsmen and doctors.) will do that for you. I also use the enclave commander mod (with 40k skins). I never have to lift a gun.
Best mod I have ever seen for any game IMO.Simply brilliant.

The style of spore is kinda.... lame, I agree. But the gameplay is acctually really good if you give it the time. The final part of it is really hard to if you want a challenge. There does not have to be any fighting since you have diplomacy options (which are just fake fighting systems so it is exactly the same as fighting) but the later stages are more about talking with cultures trading controlling as many planets as you can, and populating as much of the universe as possible.
I do own Fallout 3. Is it free? I need to look that up. thanks
I never heard of SINS tha tgame on paper sounds like on release it has already surpassed what took EVE 7 years to still not accomplish,it sounds really good.A great engine, tools that allow players to make their own maps own particles all cool ideas.Massive exploration that is not static it can forever grow limited only by players systems,it all sounds amazing, what's the catch? lol.
I really want to try that game, but no trial just a buy button.I take it the game is not a MMO,that would be the catch lol.
I agree wit hthe op we need some more building type MMO's,i already eluded in another post that i would like to have seen Microsoft stick it out with Ensemble studios and make a giant MMORGP based off of the Age of Empires game. series.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Yep, pretty simple to install, let me know if you need help with getting it to work.

Tropico 3, design your own island mon.
ANNO 1404.
Personally I found it a little too passive for my taste, but it is very in depth in terms of growing and managing your colonies. There is a lot of emphasis on creating sustainable economies within your colonies, which does involve having to set up trade routes between colonies to sustain their needs at later levels that each cannot meet on their own, due to limiting the variety of resources on each island. There is combat in the game, but it's very basic and kept mostly to a minimum.
sim city (there's a free one called lincity too)
civilization games don't feature much in the way of combat, (also has a free version called free civ) that includes the galactic version too
railroad tycoon was always quite good
birth of the federation was always good and you can go the diplomatic root rather than the war root
there are even a few of mmo builders i notice but not tried them much myself
currently playing sword of the stars myself rather than soase
Children of the Nile is a very relaxed City Builder, where the children of the citizens become the next generation of store owners, priests, scribes, ect. It takes a while to get the city going, but after it gets going, it's fairly easy to maintain. Build pyramids, sphinxes, and monuments to your glory.....and now I sound like a commercial...lol. The game is a bit older, but I still go back to it from time to time. Very little combat.
It's only got a few RTS elements once you start building a town, but Mount and Blade has to be one of the coolest games I have played in a long time. I DL'd the free trial yesterday and bought the registration key to get past lvl 7 after an hour or two. It's like if Sid Meier's Pirates and Dynasty Warriors had a bastard child that could be President.

I recently bought Anno 1404, that game is a lot of fun. And I've always liked island maps in rts games (like in Age of Empires 2/3, the island maps were always my favorite)...so an island based city building game is awesome
Also, Settlers 7 (is it 7?) is coming out later this year. Settler games tend to be good city builders, but I haven't played too many of them though outside of friend's houses.
Row, row, row your mouse, gently across the screen. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
I also recommend Anno 1404 (aka Dawn of Discovery). The regular campaign has some combat involved, but you can also play a custom game with no enemies so you can just create a huge city and industries with supply lines running materials from island to island. It's a lot of fun, it looks beautiful, and it's a PC only game so it's not infected with any console limiations.

This genre is not very popular at all, at least not among the studios that make them. I think there would be people who are willing to play more advanced building games. Usually the economy and management takes over and it's always a part of these, not that it's a bad thing. Simcity 4 with Rush Hour expansion is probably the best building game.
I also recommend Civilizations IV and Europa Universalis III, both with expansions. Neither are actual building games, but appeal to same audience, sorta.
Sins of Solar Empire is great, perhaps it's more fun to play when you get your non-combat fix. I'm not that much into combat either, but Company of Heroes or Men of War are fun when I want to have some action.
