Played a wee bit of Never Winter Nights before swearing off(and at) AOL. 1995
Started playing formal MMOs at least with Asheron's Call, running through it's beta into release and onward. 1999
Been a malcontent over MMOs ever since Planetside. Nothing has quite measured up to that game for me yet. Just wish it could have gotten more fleshed out as a 'world'. 2003

Well DAoC came out in 2001 and I played about as soon as it came out, so I will say 2001 maybe 2002. Why do you ask?
I would just like to know what the overall perspective is on here. The players who usually played MMO's during the EQ,UO and DaOC era want an mmo that is a challenge. The new generation of mmo players want something completely different.

This is the part where you're challenged to support your unsubstantiated and sweeping statement with corroborative evidence. Teh interwebz awaits your statement.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
WOW in '06. Was my first MMO, it was fun, but my best MMO Experience was right when WAR came out and the Scenarios were packed i know i leveled form 1 to 10 from scenarios alone and then it was on to Open RVR which was even better. Right now i'm gameless though

I'm in the "new generation", but I also want challenge, which is why I like EVE. But what separates me from the nostalgic vets is that I don't shoot down every new MMO for being "dumbed-down" or a "WoW-clone". I try each game I'm interested in and judge it based on its own merits.

Fascinating. I am a part of the "new generation" as well, and I go out of my way to find challenging mmos.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

i do the same bro, i mean i liked WoW, but not because it was easy, i liked it because it was a new experience and i used to have a blast in it. I think the OP is just biased.
I still have the box over here... still feels awesome how they promoted their game as a virtual world with some newspaper articles from what happens in Britannia.
If he wants to make claims about people and their introduction into the MMO world he should do it with a poll about what a persons first MMO was not the time they started. Not everyone starts at the release of an MMO.
Moreover, this is a tired point that seems to rear its ugly head on these boards far to often.

I don't attack or slander on those issues either. I didn't say all new generation mmo players enjoy the easy. One of those is Ilvaldyr from what I understand. That is not an attack personally to him, he just may enjoy a more casual game that everything is easier to access versus a challenging game where not everyone can receive a trophy for just playing the game.
The OP does not have a point or a clue. If he wants to make claims about people and their introduction into the MMO world he should do it with a poll about what a persons first MMO was not the time they started. Not everyone starts at the release of an MMO. Moreover, this is a tired point that seems to rear its ugly head on these boards far to often.
Can you hold off on the attack? You're right however. I did not take inconsideration what people's first mmo was rather than when they started playing. Again, if I started playing mmo's in 2002, what choices would I have to play? Eq, Daoc, Uo, Swg, AC? Those mmo's are designed differently then what we see currently in the market. Do I really have a choice to play AION or WoW or Lotro? Absolutely not. However newer mmo players do have the advantage to have a more diverse selection of what mmoprg they play. That was what I was trying to get across. Think harder next time.

You just proved my point though. SWG did not come out till summer 2003. I think FFXI was out in 2002 too.
It is not a personal attack; I am just stating that you do not have a point or a clue. If you are going to try and make claims based off of data you need be able to correlate the data collect to the conclusion.
Furthermore, your sample size is to small and you are displaying multiple logical fallacies.

Read back a wee bit; I started with UO in 2000. I'm not a new generation MMO player.
You're still making presumptive, biased statements.
Accessible does not mean easy.
Casual does not mean easy.
A casual, accessible game can be more challenging than a "hardcore" game requiring a huge time investment. Challenge doesn't relate to the target audience or the accessibility, it merely relates to the difficulty level of the content.

I think your still missing the point. The main point of the thread was to sample when players started to play mmos. That's it. On a personal level to my self and others it could also conduct information why posters are pessimistic or optimistic towards certain mmos rather than others. It's just a different way of looking at it.
2000 with Everquest. i thought it was stupid at first. Then i was bored one night watching one of my friends play it and decided to have an open mind and try it for myself. I was hooked til 2005 and realized theres more to life than just that game. Still tryin to find that niche again with other games. Not possible IMO.
