You have to purchase a character slot. On the FF home screen there should be an option about content Id's. Since it is your first(assuming) just purchase the 1 and it will say 0.00 and then after the free trial it will charge the 12.99$ after that.

Thanx but it keeps getting halfway on like a 7 hour update and then saying it got disconnected. I check again after and it'll start updating again and saying it has 7 hours left, like it's downloading the whole thing. I dunno how it can take 7 hours anyways, my line is 50mb and downloaded a 15GB game on Steam within 2 hours. I downloaded 9GB of FF on Steam so I was kinda guessing it would be an upto date client.
Finally got in and after 10 mins I'm done.
Probably the worst port to PC I've ever seen.
Your done with that bad stuff now ^.^
Get your signet and go wack some monsters!!

Cudn't use WASD to move = uninstall for me : Like it's been a standard since the 90s and they couldn't get it right in 2003?
Did you even bother searching?
Making keyboard compact would make you move with wasd....
lol... i really hope you didn't uninstall after all those updates. YOU CAN USE WASD!
Or just use a ps2/ps3/360 controller. It's the best way to play. You're kinda fickle.
Sometimes I wonder if some peoples actually know how to use their brain... If you can't even get to play the game without help, maybe its not the game for you. Just saying... because there's no glowing " ! " over npc's head in FFXI. That means you'll probably wont be able to do anything because you actually have to read to play the game.
" WoW " , this is kinda sad. ( See what I did there! lol )
Hey, you can use WSAD for movement. I use either my PS3 controller or WASD(depending on the day). Just look through the config menu in game an you can check out all those things.

I have to agree with parts of this. FFXI Does not hold your hand at all. It requires that you pay attention to dialog. Give it some time to get used to it. Do the "tutorial" at the Gate in the Nation you choose and get a few levels in and see what you think. I stopped playing years ago and decided to start from scratch earlier in the month. I just got my Sub-job and forgot how happy that makes me ^.^

Standard in what?
MMOs?
EQ was released in 1999, and UO didn't use ASWD.

Fun fact. WASD didn't gain popularity until Quake competitions started springing up around '96.
Moving around only let me do it via the mouse and the UI is so bad I couldn't be bothered to fight it anymore. Play Online took me several hours to figure out and then it took me ages to find out where to cancel. Had some boring intro I couldn't skip as well in game and the whole place was empty... like what does it want me to do? Play alone in an Online game? Walked around for ages and not one person so it's like... this game is a sinking ship, probably no one else could be bothered with Play Online to get into the game.
It's weird cause I used to play MMOs before WoW and put up with their crap. Then once WoW came along and spoilt me with a working UI, good controls and a simple account management system, I just can't go back to older MMOs. The problem is now all MMOs since WoW suck cause they just try to clone it and I can't go back to WoW cause Blizzard ruined World PVP with BGs.
Been screwed since 2005 lol, haven't played an MMO since. I've tried lots of them but they all turn out the same... a load of shit.
Dunno how they call most MMOs Massively anyways, coop games are more massive cause most MMOs are dead.
I can't blame ya for feeling this way about FFXI. Its something I always said, FFXI is not new player friendly, personally I think its the biggest reason the game stopped growing.
I recently quit FFXI myself and moved to Aion, maybe you should give that a try. I played FFXI for close to 5 years and had 4 jobs to level 75. Once the game announced the level cap raise though I was done. Most of my leveling happened when I was still in highschool. As I am currently in college I am unable to spend the massive amounts of time I used to on FFXI.
What I like about Aion is you play at your own pace, tons of quests, and other things to do, massive amounts of PvP also, (You will get ganked a lot though). It really fits in with my casual playing schedule like FFXI no longer could. It also reminded me how much graphics have improved in the last 7 years.
Aion is not a cake walk though and you should know that too. You will as I said be killed hundreds of times before you reach max level by other players. Then you will need to spend sometime in PvP abyss and different PvP like activities to progress. Basically if you don't like getting ganked or pvp it probably won't be for you.
After near 5 years of FFXI Aion felt like a fresh start, it was refreshing to have the new style of gameplay, totally unexpected for me to enjoy PvP as much as I am as well. In reality I kind of thank SE for adding more of a level cap, merging the servers and just really making me upset at the changes in FFXI. After 5 years playing that game I was finally able to look past it and find a wide variety of other games available.
Have fun looking for whatever game you will enjoy.
I like FFXI's UI out of every mmo I've tried and its been a ton. Yes the game if different from all other MMO's that's why I like it. SE did things how they wanted to and didn't try to copy, and thus made a successful game that has stuck at 500k subs for pretty much 6 or 7 years. I don't think POL and the UI kept it from growing, it wasn't a very casual game and forced grouping is what kept people from trying it out or not sticking with it.
You must have picked a low population server, I just started back up and there are people running around everywhere. The game is doing some server merges but its far from a sinking ship. It's what 4th in P2P subs? So Id say its doing well for an 8 year old game.
Its just FFXI is just so odd and not like any other mmo it takes some getting used to. But once you do it feels just as fluid as any other game. So if you're willing to give another go do so with patience because that is one thing you need to have with this game.
Go to Config in the main menu. Change your keyboard to Compact. Problem solved >.> I honestly can't help but think FFXI's community won't be missing someone with that mentality.
Playing - EVE, Wurm
Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi
Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem
Seriously if u couldnt even figure out how to fix the WASD problem you probably dont have what it takes to play FFXI anyways.
