Dragon Age: Awakening

elderotterelderotter Member Posts: 651

I purchased this expansion today. It attempts to install the 1.03 patch first, which failed.  After reading the forums I found a fix for this error 36 - which is to set your compatability to windows 200(see origin site for fix in in it's enitrety - there are steps). So I do this, fail.  So I waint over a half hour to do live chat with support and they said: this fix is the only fix for this problem - we will get back to you in a day or 2.  My problem is that the 1.03 patch has been out for awhile - why are they just now finding out they need 1 or more fixes to it?  Just a potential warning for those of you who are wondering about the expansion - you might not be able to install it for a day or so if you buy it now. I am surre some people are playing it, but I know I am not, even after having played by their rules.

The newest patch is lousy with fail! Check the O-Boards. I think they outsourced 1.03 to the MO team!

They should be releasing the patch to patch the last patch. Give them time. Though I've had it since pre-order and can't finish it because of the Memory leak or whatever.

They have not responded to my questions after 24 hours.  Their posted fix has only worked for 71/172 so far.  No word on a fix at all.   I am not impressed.

Glad I havent bought the expansion yet.

Anyone here tell me if its worth it or not?

Does it add a new story ala GTA4's DLC or is it just some lame side quests and the same characters.

haha! ok bro. I usually just play the 360 version anyway.

I have the PC version but i get sick of how tech savy you have to be to play games on PC sometimes (dealing with patches and tech issues).

ok, just for shyte and giggles I tried downloading the 1.03 patch yet again - this time it worked.  They still have not responded to any of my questions but I now have Awakening downloaded and installed.   I have played through to the end of the introduction - seems ok.  Only minor issue I saw was some one drinking from a cup and the cup was invisible - minor stuff.   Hope you get to play it bro.

I found the expansion rather disappointing.  I was planning to play only a couple hours a day.  I am already done with the expansion with a near 100% completion of side missions.  I didn't finish the side missions because I did not expect the game to end there.  If it was $20 maybe it would be a good price, but it is twice that.

I will not say its all bad.  There are ups and downs.  The characters are definetly better then the last game.  I didn't have any characters I wanted to use as a sacrafice.  Crafting is also positive.  BTW the ending cinematic is bugged, should be fixed not too long from now.

How much is it? Did you play all day? Is it really that short? like Fable 1 short (10-15 hours)?

From the reviews they said it was pretty long for an expansion.

And here I thought the original game was bad/boring.. This expansion is the biggest ripoff I have seen in a long time.

  • elderotterelderotter Member Posts: 651

Everyone is allowed their opinion, even if it is designed to ruin some one else's fun.   I started this thread as a warning about a problem with the expansion... it was fixed.  I am having fun playing the game and in fact am suffering the consequences of an ill-informed decision I made - much like in Origins.   Sorry for those of you who do not like Awakening, but if you expect a perfect game or expansion you will always be disappointed.

Compared to Origins, yes, Awakening is extremely short (I reckon most competent players will easily finish it in under 15 hours), but people are bashing on it for that reason without thinking. Seriously, you're getting a ~15 hours long game (with high replay value) for a lesser price than your usual new game that runs for 8-10 hours and doesn't provide any replay incentive.

In short, Awakening is only short when compared to Origins.

I just downloaded the Expansion and its rather good so far.

I read that its around 20-25 hours so thats awesome for a Xpac.

DA:O is one of my favorite Rpgs since ME1.

Awakenings is good. However, there is always going to be people that bash any game/expansion/patch, etc.   Now some games/expansions/patches should be bashed but not all of them.  We are all individuals and what I love someone else will hate.   I think there is a segment of the player population - especially of those who post opinions - that is never satisfied with anything - their expectations are so high that even a "perfect" game would get bashed by them.  I also think they have more fun posting negative reviews than actually playing.  my opinion, anyhow.

you thought Origins was bad and boring but then bought the expansion?   I guess I do not understand the logic behind that.

I bought it expecting it would actually give more insight about what the characters moved on too... To make my original purchase and 75+ hours seem worth it.

75+ hours of gameplay of the original DA:O didnt make it feel like it was worth it on its own?

The expansion adds new characters and 20-25 hours of content for half the price of a regular new title.

If you needed the expansion to validate your original purchase then you obviously didnt enjoy the original game and shouldn't have even bothered buying the xpac in the first place.

I can understand that if I hated a game the likelyhood of my buying the expansion would be around zero.  (since there was a mod edit deleting a line from the post I was responding to, I am  voluntarily editing out my response to that mod edited line - in the sense of fairplay).

    No it doesnt.

I have had DA since its release and I just now beat it 1 or 2 weeks ago with my main character. I am not the type to fly through a game and say " that was awesome " without putting any thought into what was going on ( looks like I am one of the few ). Me putting 75 hours into the game has nothing to do with its worth.. Spending all that time just to see my mage pick up a sword in a cutscene instead of frying the archdemon with a lightning bolt or a huge ice spear took what value the game had and chucked it out the window.

Not seeing the army I recruited in the final battle unless summoning them yourself in skirmishes was very weak.. The final battle wasnt even more memorable than the battle at Ostagar. The game consisting of one giant fedex quest didnt help its cause either and having to do things before any race would " honor " the ' contract ' was also stupid.

The only thing I take away from DA and its expansion is.. Duncan. He was a memorable character..

Dragon Age pales in comparison to Mass Effect 1/2 or even KOTOR 1.

Well that is your opinion, I didn't like KOTOR1 - and Mass Effect bored me.  I like Dragon Age alot and have enjoyed every minute playing it.  I still repeat if you didn't like the original buying the expansion was pointless.

Bought it, installed it, patched it, worked fine for me. 16 and 1/2 hours of gameplay for me and I did almost all the optional quests.  It was pretty good.

Let me get this straight. You enjoy the 75 hours of gameplay you experience and due to a lack luster ending that makes the whole game bad? Due to a ending that entire enjoyable journey means squat?

That's wierd dude. I mean I love the Fable games but everyone knows the endings suck. I wouldn't let an ending change my mind when it comes to liking the journey.

You must have hated a whole mess of games dude because most endings are kinda mehh.
