why did this have to be themepark

this game is so themepark it makes me want to puke. why does cant everyone be a force user that has the choices to take on these rolls. even switch sides. if you wanted to be a republic whatever with force abilities you should be able to switch to sith inquisitor if you want.

a major theme in starwars is switching sides. falling from the light mainly, but also switching back again. why not in this game.

and whats with the obsession with story. I hate it when a game force syou to do quests. that was the worst thing about the other games. they would have been awsome if every feature was unolocked from the start. the forced missions broke the entire game for me.

i hate that bioware is the company that makes the new starwars mmo.

whats your ideas about this.

This game isn't for you, obviously. This is how they wanted to make the game... if you don't like their vision you really aren't going to be forced to play it.

Because theme park is where the money is at.

Bioware has only ever made linear story based games, heavily focused on the single player game.

This MMO is going to be exactly that. It's all they know how to do. Granted, this won't really be an MMO, but it'll make money, and people will probably try to copy it, and even though the MMO market kind of died with WoW, we can say goodbye to it forever if this game succeeds.

Lets be honest here. A sandbox just wouldn't pull in the revenue that EA is looking for.

Why release a complex sandbox style game, when we can take WoW mechanics, toss a Star Wars skin on it, make a single player game, and throw a monthly fee on it.

Sorry, this isnt SWG2. This is Knights of the old republic. Although one thing bothered me at first, the inability to switch sides. But then again, classes seem to mirror each other slightly, and if you want to play on one side, why start on the other?

So you've played this game and know its themepark?  We dont know enough about the game to know what happens after the initial area or if the "story" part is just part of the initial area also. Dont be so quick to judge with little information. If you dont like Bioware making the game or your assuming its a themepark game then dont play it. Personally Im looking forward to see what this game has in store for us.

I'm a wow hater and I hope Bioware burns in hell for not giving me SWG Pre-CU.

Ah you almost fooled me for a second there.

LITTLE information? We have it straight from the mouth of the devs.

They said 95% of the content is intended for a solo player to complete. You get NPC companions so you don't NEED a group to get through this content. The content is story based and instanced.

How in satans holy hell do you think that's going to be a sandbox?

Add in the fact that every single Bioware game made in the past 12 years has been a linear storyline based single player game.... it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

You dont know this. Your assuming its a thempark based on little gameplay that has been shown. The game is still a little under a year away and they are still working on it. Just because Bioware made single player games doesnt mean this one will too. Im pretty sure they know the difference between an mmo and a single player game.

About switching sides, recall in the films that this IP is based on, made the concept of switching sides *very* difficult, and in fact, the whole of both trilogies was a lead up to a final redemption.  There was nothing quick nor easy about it.  If it were to be implemented in this game, I would hope that the mechanics involved would be equally difficult and wrenching.

I never said it was going to be a sandbox or anything. Just because you can complete it solo doesnt mean that all content is going to be solo. AOC has a story too that is done solo, but other content in the game isnt just the story.

Since when does Sandbox = group play? Personally, I'm a fan of both styles, themepark and sandbox. As long as they do an awesome job in either style, I'm a happy GAMER. If you don't like themeparks at all, don't bother watching the game's development and commenting on it. Just move on.

RPGamers who like like Star Wars, probably hates it.

Bioware has always been story focused. They're one of the best story-tellers in the industry, arguably the best. It's difficult to have a sandbox and an immersive story at the same time, the two mechanics tend to counteract each other. Not to say you can't have a story in a sandbox (the epic mission arc in EVE is fairly well done), it's just more difficult to pull off well, especially on the scale Bioware is planning.

I just don't want to be stuck in yet another mmo where I'm typing "LFG blah, blah, blah need if tank, blah blah, pst, blah blah" for like 2 hours... then logging off in disgust.  Honestly I join mmo's for party play.  Also, Bioware better make a playable Jawa race!

In regards to a solo game feel free to watch the interview massively did with the lead writer: http://www.tentonhammer.com/events/gdc2010/swtor_erickson

He addresses the concern about grouping and solo play. He stated that while the game can be done solo, just like most MMORPGs in existance, you can also group together to experience more of the game. There is a lot of content that will be missed if you only solo.

Also, how does anyone know this game is a "themepark". Seems like this is a buzzword that a lot of people recently discovered and have been attaching to anything that isn't a sandbox game. If you get on a ride at a park it is always going to be the same ride. You won't get on a roller-coaster, reach a fork where you have to make a decision, and then the roller-coaster goes a different direction depending on your choice. There seems to be a lot of decision making which completely changes the game you play, at least story, enemy, and loot wise. So how is this a themepark?

  • hidden1hidden1 Member UncommonPosts: 1,244

I just want to farm bosses over and over and get diablo style ubber lootz... and play as a Jawa.

Bioware always focuses on story driven, non open world rpgs.  Why would they try and do something they have never done before when they are making one of the most expensive games ever?  This is the way Bioware likes to do games.  Just because its not a sandbox doesn't mean it wont be good or have a lot of open ended things to do.  There is hardly any info on this game so just wait until next year to make judgments.

GASP! you forgot the plunger rp thingy! (actually missed it in 2 posts you're getting sloppy :P)

anyway if it is themepark it is more due to the fact that, thats what a majority of people will play. i'm still thinking it won't be totally "themepark" but will have its own niche. the fact that it will be so story driven says its shying atleast a little away from "themepark". how many themepark mmos can you remember the story? i can't think of any, most if they have any lore or story to them you have to really really look for them. like in wow there was books here and there where you can read abotu the warcraft lore but played no part in the game play.

Go ahead and disagree if you like, but my sources are solid. Sorry fanboys and fangirls, TOR is gonna blow.

If this is true, then I wonder what game the journalists have been getting to check out. I want to play that one!

I would like to believe you, but using a gross overgeneralization that SWTOR will be nothing more than a Star Wars themed Guild Wars clone kills your credibility. We already have information about the game to prove that theory wrong.

Obviously, BioWare Security will tie you down and beat you senseless if you try to play TOR like an MMO. Shame on you, nonconformist, for bringing radical ideas into our single-player RPG.
