I have never played a F2P game that cost me more than a normal P2P subscription per month. And honestly, most of the time I play a F2P game up to the point where I feel I *have* to spend money and then quit to move on to the next one.
I will say this though, F2P games have been getting better and allowing me to go further and further without feeling I *had* to drop a dime.
I have played many a free to play game and I have never payed for anything on a F2P game. I have played many many F2P games and have reached high levels on them without spending a dime of real money. I also do not play to be the best at PvP or what not, I play to have fun.
At first I just bought about 20.00 for a stack of diamonds, to buy mounts for my son and I. And i said, well, no big deal, just a bit more than a monthly sub.
But then in a month or so, we needed better gear, so bought about 60.00 in diamonds and said, no big deal, its only 4 months of subs......
Well, about the 3rd month, we we're nearing 40 and realized we'd need lots more diamonds to get good gear at 50......
Some of the other players we spoke to had spent anywhere from 400 to 8000 on their gear with 600 bucks being about average.
We walked away from the game but I basically spent 80 bucks for 3 months play.

In the beggining, I used to play those free to play games and if I liked them, some of them had a "premium membership" or "vip membership" or "gold access"... those would cost very few bucks, usually $4,99 to $9,99. One payment only for some, while others it would give that extra bonus content/features for a month.
I was always a hardcore player, always competing for rankings and top charts, on level, power, equipment, whatever.
Then I met one of these F2P games without ceiling for how much money you can spend and how much power/advantages you get from it... A new server opened up and I decided to make an investment... In 2 weeks, $300-350 bucks, I bought everything I wanted, had a full +15 legendary gear and the best of everything, I was a god and people worshipped me, was the top player for the first two weeks.
Then I stopped spending, and people who spent more, got stronger than me. In my third week I quit, ashamed and guilty of my stupidity. I had bought the game, there was nothing worth achieving that wouldnt take hundreds of boring grind, time that I had economized by buying everything from the cash shop. I looked around and there wasnt content to match my power, there wasnt anything left to achieve, and I couldnt be the strongest no matter how much I played, due to how the cash shop affected the true factors of power. Besides, the game was made so the people who spent more, would always get the edge, so unless I kept spending, I couldnt keep up in power.
Power was made of my level, my equipment, my pets and my ranking. Yes, my place on the ranking would give power as bonuses, so people who spend money would have to keep up with others if they wanted to keep their power bonus from being top in the ranking.
I didnt mattered that I was at high cap, had the absolutelly best gear at maximum quality, uprade and gems, etc... People could buy power for their pets whose power cap was limitless... so in the end, there was no cap to the ammount of money needed, since people could always get more power.
After that I started filtering the F2P games I played based on scrutiny of cash shop. If whatever is available on the cash shop would cost more than a certain ammount of money to get all the advantages, I wouldnt play it. Lets say, one investment of $50 bucks to get 100% of the in-game advantages on the cash shop and it would last 3 months. More than that and I dont even bother.
I usually search google for things like "Runes of Magic cash shop" and then I normally find forum topics about " how cash shop dependent is runes of magic?" type of topics... For me, it matters more than everything else. Its the first filter I use, the cash shop content/prices. I dont even need to have the cash shop open, all I need is to read some developers interviews and I can safelly say if its going to be the "bad type of cash shop".
The game was ROM. (pvp server) At first I just bought about 20.00 for a stack of diamonds, to buy mounts for my son and I. And i said, well, no big deal, just a bit more than a monthly sub. wow $80 in 3 month. Well, i played a little ROM too but never really more than 1 week or 2. I suppose you help fund my stay there. Thank you!
Ive played too many to remember or list here, many of them without spending anything, or spending very little, usually because i dont stick with the game long enough to feel the need to spend. But there have been a few which ive ended up playing for at least several months, and in some of those cases ive spent various amounts from $50 to i think probably the most ive ever spent in a single month on a game was around 5-600, thats just 1 month. Overall ive spent several thousand on a couple of those games, but in most cases it felt worth it to me and i had a hell of a lot of fun. If i dont feel its worth it, i simply dont spend it.
I was shocked to see some payed upwards of 4 digits to play (shivers).
I have never payed to play a F2P game but then again i never stick around. My reason is simple enough, I am not rich by any means nor would i pay more than the average price of 240 ~300 US Dollars a year to have access to everything in game like everyone else.
I know there are ups and downs to both sides, I just like the idea that everything will still be safe in my bank next wednesday and the next after that with a subscription game, even if i stop playing for a year or more.
I can even close my account a reopen it with everything intact.
Me myself and I shall stick to Subscription based games.

A few but none long term except may be DDO on and off.
Total cost to me ... ZERO. Thus, it is truly F2P for me.
