Why wouldnt people respond like that? funcom always fails on their game launches. No one wants to get excited and then be disappointed when it doesnt live up to what they say. Might as well start off thinking its going to suck and then be pleasantly surprised if it doesnt.

Don't you EVER tire of hearing the same crap over and over and over on this site though? After a while....I just get bored with it all. So if you don't like FunCom, don't get excited. Seems pretty simple. However, the notion that I should somehow curb MY excitement, since the game designer is someone I have LONG been a fan of....just seems ludicrous.
But let's be sure to try to smother ANY EXCITEMENT for the game with a nice big fat soppy blanket of "OMG FUNCOM SUX" just to be SURE that no one gets excited and then disappointed. FFS....all of LIFE is a series of exciting anticipations and bummer disappointments. Have children and you'll see. Why quit living and quit feeling excitement just because you MIGHT.....MIGHT.....get disappointed.
Pffft. Whatever. I think I prefer my way of enjoying all of life's little ups and downs. It's better than constantly being suspicious and not really fully enjoying anything. Bring on the success of fail! Either way....I'm going for the ride!

First off I thought the trailer was decent enough. Secondly, is it that hard to be excited yet understand things may not turn out great? For me, it's not hard at all. I get a tad excited when ever I see something that interests me being made. However I also understand it may not be as great as the creators are suggesting. Even if they try their hardest to see that it is.

Apparently from the comments and suppositions being made, I might be the only person here that has watched EVERY single interview available with Mr. Tournquist. lol (Okay...I know....I'm a bit obsessed with the man, I think he's the world's greatest storyteller, so I watch him any chance I get.) Anywhoozle.....
You guys that are really interested in the game....ought to Google search all videos under "TSW," "The Secret World," Ragnar Tournquist, etc., and join me in my obsessive drooling. :P (I don't mean that in a gay way, guys...unless you're gay, which is fine, I meant in a hungry gamer way. ;D )
P.S.: <---lol
The new vid....made me pee myself a little bit. But don't tell anyone. heh
I'm equally fanboy for Ragnar, and still read Prophet Without Honour once a year-ish just because it always comes across in so many degrees of awesome. I have high hopes for what he will pull off with The Secret World, but despite all of that I have to agree with the people who are underwhelmed by the trailer.
Maybe its just because all of the secret-keeping and hype-building set my expectations higher, but the footage shown just felt...bland and generic. I mean yes, the (enemy) animations were all very nice, but besides that it was just some dialogue and pointless combat scenes. I would rather have seen something that set the mood, showed off some environments, told more of a story - after all, that is Ragnar's forte isn't it?
Really they should've gotten the guy who directed the trailers for Shadowlands and (in particular) Alien Invasion for AO. Those were pretty solid. Hell, even AoC's first trailers were more engaging for me.
I don't know if I should get excited or not. On the one hand, I love the idea of the Secret World and have my hopes for it, on the other hand, the trailer didn't particularily tell me anything about the game. I didn't find the trailer astonishing, but didn't think it was horrible either. The Secret World will probably continue to stay a secret for me.
I didnt like the trailer at all. short combat sequences and no information at all about the game or the story. I was hoping for a much longer, developer gameplay video.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
AO was helmed by Gaute Godager, but the story was pretty much done by Ragnar Tornquist. Even though the game launched to disaster, the game recovered slightly and the storyline was great.
AoC was again a Gaute Godager game, and was hyped from day one. The man only knew how to hype his game. When it came to the beta it was evident that he didnt want to hear anything bad (I am sure there are quite a few testers who noticed the same thing). Anytime we mentioned something needed to be fixed or asked if we were ever going to be able to test Feature X, he and his goons would either shoot us down instantly or claim "Its all being tested internally, its working and will be there at launch..." only to find out he really meant something like '9 months after launch if at all...'
Now Ragnar Tornquist wrote the story behind The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and AO (as well as the novel for AO 'Anarchy Online: Prophet Without Honour') which were really well done storylines and the games themselves were good (aside from AO limping for almost a year).
But back to TSW; The game isnt really being hyped by Rag or his team. They havent said 'this and this will be here..' or anything of the sort. All they are doing is dropping tidbits of info in a fun way (all the strange sites that pop up and only have meaning for people following the game) whyich does nothing but give us locations of interest, backgrounds and bits of story. The only hype being generated is by the fans (and even then its not the normal 'This game is gonna rule the genre and be a best selling 3bajillion subs' type hype).
Will some people be disappointed with the game? No doubt. People build up expectations from theory and speculation that wont always be met. You cant please everyone.
To me the trailer showed me what I (and many others) have been wanting to see; Gameplay. Sure it was short and edited to be somewhat theatrical in presentation, but it gave a glimps of what it looks like at its current stage of development.
Being a Funcom game I expect there to be a rough period when the game releases, but I am still excited for the game. Add to that the fact that Gaute hasnt had his hands on it/in it/near it (seeing as he is no longer with Funcom) gives me a bit more hope for the game.
Time will tell, but I for one am still watching this game with a bit of excitement

Oh i do get excited for new games, atm im looking forward for earthrise, all of what ive read sounds amazing from my pov, especially the open world, no instanced, ffa loot pvp. But even being excited i know there is a high chance that all these amazing features that sound great on paper wont turn out right and the game wont be fun. With funcom games especially i am very weary. I was in AO beta and played at launch and that was just a disaster, i played thru the pain and ended up enjoying it for awhile. Same with AoC, got to max lvl, and dealt with zero endgame working then finally got the guild together and went to attack a keep and of course the walls were invulnerable due to some bug, and it was just the last straw for me on that one. They seem to have a knack for really screwing up their launches by releasing to fast or releasing with their content not fully implemented/tested.
Lately there has been a big trend of games not living up to their "hype" or just not having been properly tested or pushed out too fast by the people paying the bills (warhammer and EA). So its hard for me to get incredibly excited about things to come when the track record for the latests MMOs has been pretty bad. God knows we need something new, im bored as hell waiting for something to come out. Dismembering zombies in l4d2 can only be fun for so long!
The trailer didn't do much for me but maybe that is a good thing. I don't want to see something really great then find out at launch it is really horrible. I still think it is all about making sure the expectations are where they need to be and not hype it where it doesn't need to go.
As much as I'm loooking forward to this the trailer really wasn't motivating me enough to want to play. All I saw were some big baddies beating up on some players and a cliche old cowboy dude who thinks he knows everything. Not bashing the game, just the trailer was kinda meh. Still looking forward to TSW, though.
"If at first you don't succeed, excessive force is probably the answer."
I don't know what all this talk about "hype" is exactly. I don't think TSW has been "hyped" at all really. Now AoC....THAT was hyped. THAT shit was plastered on the cover of every single gaming magazine in existence, articles about it were on EVERY single gaming site or forum, etc., etc.
The only "hype" I'm seeing on TSW is the same BASIC sprinkling of tiny bits of info you see on ANY GAME that is being made. Most of the "hype" ( I can hardly even call it that ) has been by the fans, who...I might add...are MOSTLY fans of Ragnar Tournquist.
So....I just don't see how the game is being "over-hyped"....at least not YET.
I am looking forward to this game and when I posted a link to the video at my gaming forums, my friends there all replied with "nothing excites me about that," or "that was boring."
Hopefully the videos in the near future will show more.

I have to agree that I don't think this game has really been hyped by the developer like many recent games. This demo video on its own really isn't very impressive. It has all the standard elements of a teaser trailer. Some really nice visuals and some that are little more than acceptable. If this was just for a generic game that I had not heard of I wouldn't be compelled to watch the game based on what was presented.
What little hype there is I think comes from Ragnar himself. Just listening to how involved he appears to be with the design of the game and how it will relate to players is very refreshing. It isn't just someone spewing out industry buzzwords trying to generate interest in gerenic mmo #2143. Dynamic, rich, exciting, robust, iconic gameplay! Did we mention robust?!
Combine that with what the game is trying to do and that makes it all the more interesting. I completely understand why anyone would be getting excited about what has been presented already and agree that most of the hype so far is from players.
At the same time I fully understand people having trust issues with funcom. They promised a lot with conan, promised they learned their lesson with anarchy online and wouldn't have a horrible release and then turned right around and did that very thing. Their financial situation appears to also be troubling which contributed to conans problems. There is every reason to not have reservation about this game.
However funcom has done nice work in the past turning AO around. They seem to be going down the right path with conan, but rather slow. The designer for the secret world has a solid history behind him, so this might just not be another case of a company steaming full speed in the north atlantic. There are some good aspects to look at also. Even the manner in which the game is being delivered to the public though secret blogs, mysteries and puzzles.
I find myself to be catiously geeked about the game. Yeah that was pretty lame, but thats the best way I can think to describe it.
While I am looking forward to this game I wonder if it will be held back from its full potential since they are developing the game to work on the 360 also. Hopefully they can pull it off so it will give an enjoyable experience.

Eh-
Even though it says somewhere its being designed with the 360 in mind, dont count on it as being fact. So far there have been a couple of MMOs that were supposedly designed with the intent on being ported to the 360, but it never came to be and the design ended up being dropped at some point in favor of better PC compatibility.
Most of what has been said about TSW is that they were designing the UI and controls to feel natural and to not take up a lot of screen space (which is a good idea - a lot of MMO UIs take a a lot of the screen and can kinda detract from the game itself)

I didnt see anything new in this trailer. A mob, a few players around hitting it, a caster, a person using a rifle, a dps with a sword.
Its a typical class setup as i can see...
