Look at the SWtor site and you see many people not happy with what Bioware is doing with that game, so I'm not sure you would be happy with them doing STO. I also disagree with STO being a bomb just yet. I haven't seen any lack of peeps on the game and have no problem grouping and having a blast!
Turbine. They did an awesome job capturing the "feel" of Lord of the Rings. I would love to see them take a shot at scifi and the "feel" of Star Trek. At least Turbine "gets" exploration.
Really tough call. Trek was always a huge challenge to pull off as an MMO. There's just so little that lends itself to MMO mechanics and concepts.
Cryptic had a huge challenge on its hands, I give them credit for that. The fact that they didn't even try, really, to meet it and went instead with a Trek world at its "shootiest uppiest" with some decent text based stories shouldn't come as a surprise.
I guess the best candidate would be the company that knows how to SLOW PLAYERS DOWN and make them happy they did slow down. Turbine and CCP do this well, IMO. Turbine for their storytelling and good quest reads, and CCP for their many modes of game play that made me perfectly happy to spend my entire evening docked. Even player made courier missions are enjoyable in Eve.
So, maybe give CCP a ton of money and a person that can write Trek stories and they make make a good trek world.
I vote Turbine as well. They have shown to respect the IP and it's lore (for the most part). The gripe about opposing forces is valid but I think Turbine could easily overcome this.
Not to mention the schedule and ratio of free updates to paid expansion is pretty reasonable.
They make Cryptic look like they are playing with crayons in the MMO market.
i think the only people not really happy wiht what bioware is doing swtor are trolls from other games trying to make swtor look bad so maybe it wont sell as much and people that wanted another swg pre nge game and alot of those are really happy about this game even though it isnt straight up swg. cryptic wouldve killed the star wars universe if they got their hands on it, george lucas would die a broke man cause nobody would ever buy his stuff again.
as to the op, i think many companies could do a good trek mmo, turbine, blizzard, bioware and many others im sure, question is would be how good it will be, trek can only do so much and its not a very mmo friendly ip. depending on how swtor turns out, from what i see now i want bioware to do all future mmos cause nobody else can come close to putting out a good story element but i want to wait till tor comes out and i see it in action.
It would be interesting to see how good of a Star Trek game Blizzard could make. Think I would take them over any other game making company out there right now.
Since STO is an official bomb, who do you want to see develop Star Trek? I think Bioware is best suited for the job
I posted a few months ago that BioWare and Cryptic should have swapped IPs. BW doing Trek, and Cryptic doing SWTOR.
I take it you're not a Star Wars fan then because I wouldn't wish Cryptic on any company, honestly though I couldn't really care less who did it just someone willing to give a fair amount of free content.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
For years I've had a little fantasy involving Star Trek and CCP. It would have to be very different from EVE Online, but the possibilities would be delectable if it was done well.

The state of the industry currently.. I doubt any are capable of doing the Star Trek IP justice.. I thought Turbine would be a deccent option for a themepark game.. but.. I like sandboxes and currently there is maybe one that could be an option.. CCP.. Take Eve, make some significant changes, slap a Star Trek skin on it, beef up some questlines.. You might have somthing then..
Short answerr: Anyone but Cryptic. Long answer: Aaaaaannyyyyyyoooonnneeee buuut Cryyyyyptttiiiiccc!
Seriously though, depending on how CCP handles World of Darkness, I'd nominate them. If WoD heavily impresses, then I would feel comfortable with them creating a sandbox/theme park hybrid, story based MMO.
My second choice would be Bioware. What they're doing with SWTOR is impressing me and I just really, really wish the news on SWTOR coming out was news on STO instead (imagine 11 fully realized Star Trek planets? That would be awesome.)
i'd REALLY like to see what Perpetual had in mind...
i'd say Turbine as well. Star Trek doesn't actually need to be a pvp-based mmo. really. i want to boldly go where no man has gone before, not to blast one klingon after another forever in an arena.
i don't like as well what Bioware is doing with SWTOR. they better go make more single player games, that's what they are really good at.
I might go with Turbine, too, because they actually invest in providing an immersive experience and trying to capture the feel of the IP at hand. I can't say I'm fond of their combat system in their new MMOs (LOTRO and yes, DDO), but space combat is a whole other game, so who knows?
I'm positive Blizzard would make a solid game out of it, but the two just don't seem like a good match to me. And I'd rather Bioware make Mass Effect Online.
I take it you're not a Star Wars fan then because I wouldn't wish Cryptic on any company, honestly though I couldn't really care less who did it just someone willing to give a fair amount of free content.
I'm a mild fan of both IPs. It's just that Trek is more story-oriented and Star Wars is more action-oriented. Cryptic did a decent job with the space combat in STO.

I'll grant the space combat in STO is decent, but it's the exact same from tutorial to cap, and...you can't fly up or down. That's a decision I'll never understand. The space combat would have been much better if space was, you know..acually 3D.
That said, until I got sick of the space combat (five or so levels in), I thought it the best part of the game.
I would actually like to see what Bioware could do with an all-out, old fashioned space opera like Flash Gordon or John Carter. They'd keep some of the cheese and throw in some of their own spice. Would be fun.
Star Trek is story-heavy, but its episodic nature is deceptive in that it's really not that easy to turn into an MMO. Cryptic has gone the obvious route in adapting those "episodes", but I felt they did not work. I neither got a sense of a story forming and resolving naturally, nor had an overarching sense of adventure.
Giving it some thought, ST is actually really hard to adapt into an MMO setting. I can see many solid companies failing to satisfy the fans with it.
EDIT: Also, the space combat itself in STO might be OK, but the repetitive nature of the missions guarantee you're bored with it pretty quickly.

Horrible idea, they would have borked up Star Wars

Perhaps PopCap Games could make a better Star Trek game.
Ok.. that was a joke.....
Im not really famaliar with the overall quality of Most Developers, but I have enjoyed every Bioware game Ive played. So... I vote bioware.

ANYBODY BUT CRYPTIC. and i do mean anybody i have not seen anything this bad since asherons call II
I don't care about STO, I wanna see a new Star Trek on TV with Ryker at the helm of an even bigger badder flagship!

I would prefer Turbine first and if they wouldn't do it, then Blizzard.
