That is quite good, especially compared to that of Alganon.
I'm not shocked though. It all depends on your expectations
That is actually quite good and looks like it would be very suitable for a UI. It's funny how you mention how little time it took, because when I first saw the new UI for Alganon, I kept shaking my head and thinking "Man, my custom WoW UI looks 10 times better than this, and I only spent a couple hours muckin around with a few addons like KGPanels and Pitbulll, along with some custom textures I did in Photoshop."
Very nice considering how much time you spent on it. You do have a bright future in graphic design.
The scary part and I doubt that QOL does any of it's artwork. They subbed it out to

Oh, the idle mind is a scary thing when it wants to focus on Mr Bully.
I'm majoring in graphics design as well and I've never felt that a UI/HUD needed to be flashy or filled with unnecessary artwork. The UI should be easily readable and display key information without having to fish through various menus and buttons; that’s the design of a nice, fluid UI/HUD. It is used for nothing other than displaying information.
The original Alganon UI was a blatant rip-off, and I mean blatant. If I were to copy another designer’s work and turn it in for my assignments and it resembeled WOW UI as much as Alganon UI does, I would of failed and been accused of plagiarism. With that aside, it was still a functional UI.
The new one, as minimal as it might be, is functional. Sure, it’s not eyecandy, it’s just random squares of information, but it’s not a horrid UI. It’s functions and displays the information in an easy-to-read way.
In the OP, the sample unit frame you made reminded me of the LOTRO frames for some reason. But I honestly just don’t think having a glitzy UI is a main concern to the developers especially when they have so much else to work on to get the game up to speed. A flashy UI would be the least of my concerns.
But if you really want to design a nice, appealing UI you need to take a step beyond the basic unitframes that are all over the marketplace and come up with a new way to display the information. Quit reskinning an old layout; it’s not good design.
a hud indeed doesnt have to look glitzy but a good looking hud does add to the feel of a game
if you add a tech themed hud to a fantasy game it wont work.. if you add a medieval theme to a space sim. it wont work.
the new one they made can be functional but it is totally uninspired and looks like stock material
Dereck smart was mentioning he put his art team on the new hud and that they should come up with something original
and he said it looked promising. well that is not true imo
im not saying im a a good graphic designer yet as im still learning. but it just sickens me that with so much time they had they just did nothing.
Guy's not a native speaker. I'd like to see you communicate as fluently in an other language.
can you post what the current alganon version is of the component you did to compare?
I don't want a flashy or glitzy UI. I want something as small as possible that won't get in the way of me seeing the world and what's going on.
I don't need a picture of my character or the mob I'm attacking attached their health bar. I already know what they look like and it takes up space. Give me a red line for health and ten small squares for my action buttons...that's it.
I don't understand some people when I see screenshots of windows with gargoyles, flames and vines all over. Medievel or fantasy design? What the hell for.
DSmart's posts got deleted, AGAIN, and I missed it? Man oh man.
well what i think the most sad thing about this is, that i was always one of those people that protected alganon and took it for what it was. i continued to follow the game and had small expectations for 2.0. i really hoped it was goin to be better.
but what bothers me is that it was being said that they would come up with something "completeley original"
it ends up being the same hud with a little tweaks.
Proffesional company's are our role model for what we become later.
and we are supposed to learn from them. and if several people are working in a longer period on these kind of things
it shouldnt look like this.
Too bad MR smart cant come up with a good argumented post
that only makes me less motivated to give this game another chance
i didnt had a problem with the hud. if they didnt sayed that something cool and original was on the way
P.S Derek, maybe learn dutch within a few years, and i will judge you on your grammar when im out of consecutve criticism
