I normally don't do these promotion type of posts, but I think this game warrants the attention. If your like me, you've been looking for a good game in what has been a virtual wasteland of crappy recently released titles with nothing promising on the horizon until the end of the year. I've been playing WoW and Eve on and off for the last 5 years(the only 2 games I consider premium titles), and I couldn't handle it anymore. I've probably played about every P2P under the sun, and they all left me mildly disappointed or worse.
I initially played AoC when it was released, and quit for a lot of the same reasons that everyone else quit (instability, poor performance, lag, lack of content, etc). Was overall very disappointed with it. I came back about a year later, and still found the game severely lacking. I recently read that it had won the "Most improved game" but I still didn't give it much attention. Now its had a new expansion released that has had a largely positive reception... so I figured I'd give it another shot.
Fast forward to today, I can honestly say if AoC had never launched... and was kicking off its launch tomorrow, this game would have and retain 2 million subs easy. Every single aspect of the game has improved since the last time I played, and dramatically. I'm not going to go into a huge detailed post about it, but literally every issue I had with the game has been addressed (stability, performance, huge open-ended zones added, no lag, tons of mid-level content added, end-game expanded drastically, siege performance increased, PvP system improved). On top of all that, even though its 2 years old... its still by FAR the best looking MMO on the market. I'm currently running it in DX10 at 5760x1200 (eyefinity) with all the goodies turned up... and its absolutely stunning (and remarkably stable). I don't remember it being this good looking of a game before, so either I'm senile or they've made some improvements with DX10. I've also heard numerous reports of it running much better on lower end systems.
Come at it from a fresh perspective. Don't let old biases and that bad taste in your mouth cloud your judgement. Pretend the game just released and its sparkly new. I think your really doing yourself a disservice by not giving this game a fresh try. It surprised the hell out of me.
*Note (personal opinion): unless you have a particularly thick skin, don't join a PvP server. The community on them are absolutely horrible and impede game enjoyment. This is coming from a Eve/Darkfall player who generally enjoys PvP. The community is just a sour apple in this particular instance. However the PvE servers have a very decent community.
*edit
this was originally posted in the LFGame forum, but for some reason the mods moved it. Apparently recommending games in a LFGame forum is unacceptable, even those the description includes "have a recommendation for a game?" in it.

Agreed great game.. I am currently spending some time in Age of Conan and in Aion... Both are amazing games for different reasons...
I've been back for a bit now, I played at launch and left, mostly because I couldn't keep the client running without a crash. But (most) of the bugs are gone now and the content is rich, not to mention the comabt. I'm having a blast.
I agree I am having an absolute blast in the expansion (Aoc)

I am a bit curious about this game, do you think you could tell me a bit more about it so that I can make a more infoirmed decision. Tell me how the PVE works in this game as all games it works differently and as I am dyslexic I can get confused easily.
Yah I agree, this game is definitely the best MMO out on the market at the moment. Very stable, a plethora of content at ones disposal now, and overall one of the greatest MMO experiences out to date. I've pretty much played everything, and I have been playing this 6 months now and I am still hooked. WoW couldn't even say that, and I played that game for four years only because I didn't think it could be possible that I could be happy playing anything else. Now I actually am enjoying what I am playing.
I just recently sub'd again. I haven't played since launch leaving very pissed off and jaded so I didn't expect much. To my surprise, they made a lot of improvements. My only gripe is all the loading screens, but that seems to be the price you pay for awesome graphics in an MMO. Aside from that, I am having an absolute blast mauling things and exploring.
We can do better than that. Google the unlimited trial something like www.ageofcoana/trial and see for yourself.

It's your typical questing affair with end-game raiding and faction grinds for gear. The quests are well written and the game has a very solid and deep lore due to being based off a series of books.
The -melee- combat system is actually really good, probably the best in the MMO business. Very interactive. You basically start your combo and then have to hit a sequence of directional keys in order to successfully perform that combo. Unlike other games (Aion) you aren't rooted to the ground while doing these combos. You can move around and such and only pause shortly (for the animation) when you execute each step of the combo. This is made more strategically interesting by the shielding system that the game employs, where you (and NPCs) can move your defensive posture in a way that protects certain against certain directional attacks. So ideally, you want to be using combos that attack the side a target is least protected. The defenses can be shifted around at will by a player, and NPCs will do it automatically.
I don't know much about the ranged classes, as I can't bring myself to play a range class when the melee system is so entertaining.
I'm very mildly dyslexic (I mix up east/west and write certain characters backwards) and I don't have an issue with it, although if you are heavily dyslexic you could very easily have trouble with the directional combos.
this game seriously rocks now. What a difference between launch and now.
