No, I don't think Lost the TV show would be a good IP.
.
But what caught my attention is one of the directors or writers said that they never talked down to the audience. They always strove to be smart.
.
Thirteen million viewers tuned in to watch the last Lost episode.
.
Does this mean that a 'smart' MMO might have a decent size market?
.
Lost wasn't smart in a grindy, tedious way, the story was written in a way that made you think. It explored the human condition.

How do you combine instant gratification with the mystery Lost used? MMOs can't be smart, because people are dumb. We want giant ! points, dots on the map showing quest locations, and easy rewards.
A more adult themed mmo (not talking age of conan adult here) That does not isnsult its players, gives the a well writen story/setting with hooks that consitently keeps them guesing. The ability 2 have good characterisation that develops over time. That doesn't hold your hand and lets you make up your own mind about things. Sounds good to me.
OMG - no. Would never work. Just doesn't fit.
LOST was awesome BTW...that show tops my list of all time faves for TV. It rocked!
Lost was forced to get smart after season 3 because they were making crap up as they went.
But this was a very odd correlation you made. MMO's typically get the audience it deserves.
I generally don't like people who likes Lost, so this would be a great idea
The non-thinking-man's pseudo-thinker. The margarine of mystery. The diet coke of character study.
A blind rip-off of solid ideas from better works, without bothering to grasp the first thing about them.
Almost-reality-TV superficiality on all things human.
Sure. I say let Cryptic do it. They'd "get it".
Thats not what he meant, at all.
I see, it's 1337 to snub Lost.
.
It's 1337 to snub Microsoft, Walmart, McDonalds, WoW and the U.S.

You play Eve. Fine.

Would you say the same about Dragon Age Origins?

You LOST me there.
Is there a smart way to shove ten-million people into the hatch?
Oh wait, WoW has beeen doing it for years...
Guess it all depends on the $$$ *shrugs*
I'd lulz though... and I think any self respecting smoke monster would too.
So... probably not.

LOST ended in season 5. There was a finale and a first "last episode". If you kept watching it when they somehow made seasons after the final episode, then you're just a moron. To me, it was a huge slap in the face. The first 3 seasons were great, then 4 and 5 were terrible, but by that time you were already hooked and were just waiting for it to end.
And yet, Heroes was canceled w/o even a final season or episode. Go figure.

Original MMos were smart. Not anymore, because there are far more dumb people that, as you said, need the !!!!
That's because Heroes had horrible horrible horrible writing. Lost may not have made sense, but the character reactions and development was accurate, and there was at least some semblance of reason to what was happening.
As for season 4 and 5, I enjoyed them. And the finale was one of the best endings to a tv show ever. I disliked season 3 the most.
My feelings exactly, actually was more like wanting to slap myself after watching it right from the begining to the finale on sunday.
If they were to ever make a Lost mmo, then it would need to have no "Endgame" content just like the show, if it did then it wouldn't be true to the series!! lol
seriously? Lost...
Bring back Vanilla WoW pvp
Lol
Maybe this is the secret mmo Bill Roper was referring to in the interview he did.
Guess we'll find out soon!
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
God, I can already see how the MMO is going to end...you're going to have to find a place to lay down and watch people escape the island to win.
I'm wondering if the OP means "to have an MMO with such addictive teasers/cliffhangars that it brews up a cult fanbase". Which I think is totally possible with the right amout of foresight. As for a Lost-based MMO, I only think it's not possible now because of the ending. Not because the series ended, but because the revelation made the entire history of the island trivial. I think Lost is in a good position to make a graphic novel to tie up loose ends, but that's about the only medium it could use now that they went the route they did.
I could go on about how I would personally do a Lost-based MMO, but again, the number one problem would be finding a way to take back what people now know.
