Hello everyone,
So i tried darkfall for a couple of weeks right after it was released, played it, and then quit for a while.
I saved my come-back trial for a couple of days ago, and i'm now playing it again, but since i can't do any hardcore gaming anymore (studies) i can't go powerlevel my stats up,
nevertheless, i must say this game is fun, even tho i haven't got that much playtime!
Everytime i log in i got something to do, craft, harvest, kill mobs, do quests, while this isn't even what Darkfall is about, Darkfall is about awesome pvp battles! i've have my 1 on 1 fights, i find em pretty awesome since there is so much at stake usually.
With my casual playstyle i'll get enough stats (eventually!) to participate in the big fights, but so far i'm already having fun.
The community in Darkfall (on EU at least) is amazing, so many people help me, give me free items, explain me things and they give me nice tips.
As i can conclude, this game is fun when played casual, especially because you know there is more fun coming!
p.s. Darkfall needs a re-review on this website, a 6 is way too low for this game. Darkfall is different, thats why i like it!

I doubt that reviewing would change anything. Reviewing doesnt go for serveral months, which would be needed to get past grind phase to be able to have fun in pvp. In this state review would harm the game more, instead of helping. If there should be review then in Q4 after the xpacs were introduced with prestiges class.

Well Q4 may be the right time for a re-review, but all i'm saying is that a 6 for Darkfall is awfully low
Oh believe me, that 6/10 is justified. Q4 DF2010 won't fix most of the core issues players have from what I remember and while there will definitively be an increase in Subs once DF2010 hits, the subs will go down quickly again after 6 months (guessing that AV will do another 6 month deal).
Given your limited amount of playtime, it's normal that you haven't noticed it. For a reviewer to actually review DarkFall, he'd had to either
1: Play for 6 months to be PvP-ready, as the game is all about "PvP" (Despite the horrible PvE grind...)
2:Play the first 24 hours, which in DarkFall is all about learning the UI, doing the first few quests, killing goblins, killing goblins, killing goblins, killing trolls.
Of course it's normal for a PvP-Focused MMORPG to have a little grind, so let's be generous and say that the reviewer is required to play for 2 weeks. Sounds good? Well he still can't do anything other than PvE, he's nowhere near close to PvP-ready, he gets rolled by Veterans using AoE Magic that hardly requires any player-skill to use.....etc
Crafting system is very basic, lack of a real economy, lack of PvP and PvP Focus, huge grind, huge gap between new and veteran players, etc
No matter how I look at it, it's a 6, and even 6 might be a bit generous. That said, if you read ForumFall, a lot of players refer to DarkFall at launch as when DarkFall was at it's best, simply because players were pretty much on equal ground, you had actual challenging PvP. Perhaps at that time DarkFall would've been an 8, and had AV improved the game in that direction, it could easily be one of the best "Niche"-market game.
I like your last paragraph, simply because it's what I was going to say. Basically, the reviews came out during this period. Before the so-called "age of magic". So, a lot of reviewers haven't even seen the full game. Do I think they should re-review for DF2010? Sure. I think, by then, there will be sweeping changes that will dramatically alter the game.
Darkfall is not much more grind then other games, it just may look like it because of the quests,
in darkfall there are quests to kill 700 goblins of a different kind for example, yes it looks like a grind and it is,
but in other games it just split up, kill 10 goblins, kill 15 murlocs, kill 15 trolls, kill 15 orcs etc. etc...
And lack of real economy and pvp depth, well, your not doing something wrong, you should look at some major clans and ask them about the games economy and pvp depth :P nothing wrong with that in DF!
I think the grind is probably about the same once you factor in all the ganking you get from thugs in the game. Doing the same thing over because you were killed and looted is what makes DFO a grindfest.
Get a third party program so you can bot the entire time you are sleeping/studying or at school and in a year you'll be golden. The game does have a fantastic open world, sadly for me that is all it had.
In all my playtime i haven´t been ganked once, when i fight in pvp at the moment its usually an exiting 1vs1 battle, if you are a carebear and do nothing, yes, then your getting ganked, but if you try with effort to kill the opponent its pretty awesome.
nevertheless, getting a mount isn't that hard, and it can prevent ganking BIG time (haven't had to escape with my mount yet, usually i fight back, but still you never know)
And also, (on EU at least...) most people i meet in the game are actually helpfull and kind to me, ask me what i'm doing, giving me some handy tips, sometimes they give me gear and stuff. So my experience with other players in Darkfall was either a pleasant talk with tips & gear that i receive , and the so far exiting 1 on 1 battles.

Just read this, seriously. DarkFall was not supposed to be a PvE Grind with end-game PvP, it was supposed to be all about PvP. Am I saying there should be no grind? Of course not. But why must you grind 6 months to be "PvP-ready"? Why not 2 months?
It's not about the quests, these quests hardly matter. Pick that kill 320 Goblins quests, a new player will be farming goblins for a few days so he can complete this quest at the same time he's grinding. Following quest is to kill Trolls, same thing, you'll be grinding trolls at one point so you'll be completing this quest at the same time as you grind your skills up. These quests are not the issue and never were. Sure the numbers are suprising at first, but once you count how many of those monsters you've killed so far, it's not actually that bad.
As for "ask major clans"....perhaps you should ask them how many actives they have, the numbers are suprising. Hell, just take a look at ForumFall and see for yourself.
oh lord, the ignorance....
surprisingly good or low numers? :P
And i have been asked by a couple of clans so far, all of them asking me to join them, they offer that they'll help me with trading and stuff, and they'll take me to battles. they don't even asked stats or anything, and starting in a smaller clan doing small fights is a good start in darkfall in my opinion.
Spoken like a true ganker.
Word.
I have been playing casually for 14 months and it keeps getting funner. I think for awhile it became twice as fun every month (so yeah at first I kinda hated the game in comparison to now . .. not from getting rolled or from not having skills/stats but because I sucked at it I realize now).
Review of 6 is absolute shit! I mean cmon . .. look at the other crap games ratings! Man . .. I've had some really epic times here. People will be talking about Darkfall for a long time . .. kinda like how people are still talking about coming from EQs 'rallos zek'. The thing is the experiences that I had cannot be recreated! Everything that happens in this is only temporary. It is not like there are hundreds or thousands of people playing the same battleground as me in some instance like in a different game as everything that happens is original and only comes once. Sure it all comes down to the same basic stuff but before I can finish doing what there still is to do out there AV keeps coming up with more content (like the sea fortress expansion was awesome imo . .. can you imagine now living in Agon without Villages and Sea Towers? Was some really great additions and you have to admit that this game grows fast when you think of what it was like EU launch). Maybe I would be burned out like many of you if I grind or played everyday? I think that I have logged on with the intention of skilling-up under a dozen times . .. most of the time it is in hopes of successful PVP and lately it has been working on certain mobs for enchanting which I wish that I had been working on since the beginning because it forces me to travel to many PVP hotspots all over Agon.
I think in a way what has helped me was ditching the clan thing because it gets boring living in one city and having a bunch of allies . .. same mobs, same crap. I like to move to a different part of Agon everytime I start to get bored and it's a whole new experience everytime cuz Im still getting better and tougher and find all sorts of new things that werent there before. I think that having more than one holding is important in having more fun while you are in a clan so that you have more options of where to be based out of. It seems that AV thinks of these things too . .. portal shards?

Agreed, just recently I've started to get abit bored (6+ months in) and I realized tonight that I've been living out of my clan city for a month. Our allience has 4 hamlets around the map but for some reason lately I keep staying around the city doing the same thing, when in reality I have access to all ends of Agon through portals.
This weekend I plan to head to one of the hamlets or an npc city and live out of it for a week or two to switch things up. Thats the great thing about DFO imo. Depending on what you do ingame can drastically change your experience. Theres no other MMO out right now that compares to amount of variety Darkfall offers as far as I'm conserned. Every other MMO just seems so damn bland compared to it...lol. But on the other hand, those that only care about their stats and grinding to the top would likely get bored or burn themselves out very quick. Its all a matter of how you approach Darkfall.

Funny though that people admit that they needed so many months to get fun started. What do we learn out of these texts?
You need a lot of time or you have to like korean grind to enjoy this game. If you do i wish you a lot of fun as you will have it plenty of it (It was serios wish!).
