If a MMO company came out with Chess

kb4blukb4blu Member UncommonPosts: 717

From Barnum and company a new way to play Chess online.

Its Free to play of course.

You will be given a virtual board and all of the pieces.

You can make the pieces any color you want for a small fee of $1.00 per piece.  Also the board has 64 squares they can be changed for $0.50 each.

The cost to move a piece will be based on how far a piece can be moved each turn.  Kings are only $0.25 per move as they can move only one square. Pawns cost $0.50 since they can move 2 squares on the first move. Knights cost $1.00 per move and all the others are $2.00 per move.

To make the game fair we do not charge to castle . (We want to keep skill in the game)

For the paltry sum of $10.00 you can make your Queen invinceable.  This is to make the game fair for players with a low skill level.

Don't have time to spend on playing??  No problem.  For $50.00 you can hire a pet to play the game for you.

Remember our company motto... "There is a sucker born every minute"

    It's not twitch based!

Sounds like "f2p" too. Of course you can choose to not move any chessmen but you won't get far if you don't pay.

    Several MMOs have chess already.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

    I like because it's free

For it to be a WoW clone, you would need a bunch of Pawns crying about the fact that even though they chose to be a Pawn; they want to be able to do everything that a Knight and a Bishop can do.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

No they want to do with a pawn what others do with all pieces.

No they want to do with a pawn what others do with all pieces.

And if it was EVE, they would complain that they were a Pawn and not a humanoid avatar that they are able to dress up like Barbie and Ken while hiding on the chess board because of the mean 'ol baddies waiting for them outside to take their lunch money...

And if it was CoH, you could not tell the Pawns from the King because the King would probably look more like the Queen while the Pawns would be eight feet tall and dancing around like they were having a seizure...

And if it was WAR, you would have Black and White pieces still sitting around wondering where the third player was...

And if it was STO, you would realize that you actually ended up with checkers instead of chess (but would probably quit the first time you jumped anybody)...

And if it was LotRO, those not familiar with the Lore might wonder why some of the Pawns had hairy bases and others did not...

And if it was AO, your pieces would be made out of LEGOs with the promise of better pieces any day now...

And if it was SWG, well... if it was SWG... you'd just outright be screwed.

    I think I need a ciggy.

After the first expansion they would dumb it down so it would be more like checkers.

And then when people complained it was still too haaard, they would release an update to make it more like tiddlywinks.

It's the wave of the future, get with the times!

People would be crying to the devs that the queen is overpowered and needs a nerf.

Also....the death penalty is too harsh.  Permantly removing a piece from the game after capture (death)?  How dare they!   Constant forum whining would result in pieces being placed back on the board in the same space they died, within 30 seconds of capture/death.

And...whiners would cry that "it takes to long to move across the board" so insta-travel would be implamented, allowing players to move any piece to any open space on the board.

Then they open a bidding system in the item-cash shop. The person with the highest bid on the game wins the round.

Funny, I just made the chess/mmo comparison in another thread before seeing this. Only thing you need to add is the 'leveling' factor where the more you play, the farther you can move each piece. With a cost of $5 of course.

I still can't quite grasp some MMOs that offer unattended leveling... EVE is kind of an exception because it 'levels' you while you focus on anything you enjoy. But then there's games like Jade Dynasty, where you can equip an item that completely automates the entire killing/looting process. Seriously, I will play a game to enjoy it - not to let my computer play it while I do something else. JD's a cool game and all outside of that. Just a funny feature to me.

Don’t forget you need a nice chess box home for your pieces to live in. Chess themed furniture can be acquired in game but the best items are cash shop only. Multi coloured squares for your pieces to sit on at home are only £4.99 in today’s special offer!

We will be having regular content updates, new board regions for you to explore, Desert Board will be with you in all its sand swept glory in the coming months. RRP TBA.

The Dark Elf theme set and the Runekeeper and Warden chess pieces are VIP only. As a very important punter you will have all the games content open to you, except for the cash shop content we expect everyone to pay through the nose for.

Are you a Knight player? At Chess-mart you can look forlornly at our cash shop items and consider exchanging the handful of points you got from days of grinding for a Knights +1 Move potion.

There'd be endless threads about why the pawns all want to play as queens and why can't they play their own gender.

Or maybe they would create a PvE server where pieces cannot be removed from the board unless you were flagged for PvP.
