Yes I did. It's called an opinion. Notice I also said it would be bad if a similar thing sprouted up in LotRO.
Again, let me just reiterate that this is a "what if" article, as so many of our List features are. Take it with a massive grain of salt.
I guess it did succeed in its purpose however. It got you lot discussing it.
Well, I also think that the My Little Pony mount is silly, but Blizzard certainly sold a LOT of them, so there was obviously a demand for it, so more power to them.
As for LOTRO, its a mixed bag. This is likely to bring in more players, but I doubt they will have a quality community after that. I've seen way too many F2P games, and the vast majority have poor communities at best. But we will have to wait and see what happens in that regard.
If it was only Turbine, I'd be more optimistic... But with WB calling the shots, this has the potential for some seriously epic failures written all over it. But again, only time will tell what happens.
Again, let me just reiterate that this is a "what if" article, as so many of our List features are. Take it with a massive grain of salt.

"Will no one rid me of this troublesome thread?"...
He posed some interesting points. While you may not agree with them, or their presentation, that is hardly grounds for calling for their censorship.
He is not responsible for how some here have taken this. It is, as he has repeatedly stated, a what if piece. That has implications that appear to have eluded some here.
It amazes me that so many people on this site, especially writers, have apparently never actually played a F2P game.
The biggest thing about a cash shop game is that use of the cash shop becomes mandatory at high levels. Not buying more quests, not buying extras, but far more devious reasons.
For instance, nerfing stuff - drop rates, xp rates, making combat harder. Thus requiring you to purchase buffs from the cash shop.
Based on their presentation at the virtual goods summit, this is a big source of their income in DDO. Did they design DDO to require this? Who knows. Will they do the same for the new content in LOTRO? Will they tweak the old content in LOTRO to require it? Who knows. But they very well might, as most other F2P companies do. It's hard to resist.
Similarly, you have an absolutely horrible situation with endgame gear. On the one hand you need to get radiance for your armor. But it's a raid grind to get it. On the other hand, weapons, you have the whole LI system which is chance based.
Rather than address this problems (which people have complained about since Moria), Turbine could just put the solution in the cash shop. Radiance potions. Things that let you re-roll your LIs without grinding (just puling out your credit card).
Again, the latter is very common in F2P games, and where is the big bucks are made. People spend $100s, even $1000s trying to get a perfect endgame weapon.
Will Turbine fall into this trap? Again, it's hard to resist easy money.
Still, they had to do something. The game was clearly dying, and they clearly weren't interested in actually making content for it anymore. Maybe this way they can afford to hire people to actually make content for the game.
And it will definitely improve the community, which was probably the worst I have ever seen in a game. Like rich snobs in some sort of country club. It's funny hearing them complain about F2P players, it's like the above complaining about having to let minorities in.
Your scenario is based on games that have no monthly fees . LoTRO is a lil different because it's a hybrid with P2P + F2P folks. Turbine's goal is to get it all: monthly fees and cash shop purchases. Preferably, subbed folks using the cash shop too:)
Your exacly right. Paying a sub after F2P is no more than having a standing order for 500 tokens a month. Some believe they can save them up for future xpacs. Yeah, maybe they can but im betting there will be all kinds of anti-grind and improved drop items, among others, that will see the use of these "free" tokens.
Edit for spelling.
Yes if you think the 500 free tolkens for the lifetimers like me is going to be enough to do anything with lol. What this is, is a free never ending trial. All the while pushing you to sub, or to spend stuff in the store to unlock. Then on top of that a new way to milk the lifetime members out of cash they were not spending.
Pure and simple a money making opertunity for wb/turbine. Just a way to increase market share and proffits.
Meanwhile we still wind up with the radaince/li's at the end game.
Nothing has chaned other than the amount of cash being raked in.
Ive already decided that im not going to play anymore after my sub ends so im nearly finished whipping this dead horse. But for those who say the community wont suffer I would like them to take a look at the LOTRO page on facebook especially the discussion section. It will or should scare the shit of people who currently play LOTRO.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Nope, it's an editorial. Read any of the previous lists too. They're all mostly conjecture. They're meant to incite discussion. As almost all editorials are. Sorry if you read this as scaremongering (fear mongering maybe?) but if you read the article again you'll see me refer to myself a number of times as the one "worrying", another sign that it's an editorial piece.

I have no problem with it going F2P....right now. I'll keep my sub as long as I see the game still going in the direction I like. If it doesn't, I'll simply unsubscribe. No harm done. I loose NOTHING.
For those of you who complain about f2p communities, I've played many a f2p game and must say that WoW rivals the worst of the f2p communities. Also, the f2p community of LotRO is kinda restricted in their questing. They can only quest in the starter zones (except for the story-line quests). Even that ends before Moria. Their chat is also restricted. I doubt many of the higher level people will notice a change (as far as community).
Well my problem is this attempt at more profit/greed at the expense of gameplay.
Lets take around 100k subscribers(approx) x $15 per month=$1.5 per month. Now you have maybe 20 full time people working on this game = $75,000/month each. Now there is definately power, overhead, rent, etc... but you get the point. They are making money even at 100k subscribers, trust me they do not pay too many people more than about 10k per month. Yes you have shareholders maybe, idk.
The point being that they are taking the game which was in good shape and will now try and milk it. This after Turbine was purchased by Warner for probably this explicit purpose of going FTP and milking it.
I have already cancelled my subscription and will not subscribe to another Turbine/Warner game.
I mean, when did it become necessary for customers to pay extra for shiny weapons, potions, mounts, etc... when they are supposed to be part of the game. Not a chance with me. I would rather never play another MMO than go through this BS.
I think a lot of the worries are unfounded. Sure some people will hate to see Golum pets but some people may like them. How does it impact your gameplay at all what other people buy? If you don't like it then don't buy it.
I never got why people in mmos always wanted such small niche communities too. I would rather see more people play and have to ignore a few clowns then see a ghost town everytime i log in.

Well, the thing with F2P is that it is a mechanism for not losing subs, your population should hold steady players may just go very casual and approach the mmo as a social game. Wow is still a sub game, they just are able to make a pile of money on top through their cash shop. Anyway, Turbine should be able to make this work, micro transactions/cash shop should be able to generate money if the game is any good, and I think LotRO is alright as a PvE game. Longer term is the question of whether, and how fast, the game will now expand as the micro transactions have to fund the development costs. However, Turbine do have the ace of having a high profile IP, so if they expand into Rohan and Mordor you would have thought box sales for the expansion could meet the development costs and make a profit even. It's one of those things, the game will do enough to keep going in f2p model, but whether you will get long-term game expansions of high quality is another matter. Since the game itself will start to show it's age over next years or so many might choose route of deinstall and go to the upcoming major PvE mmos due for real ease in next 12 months. May also have to compete with WAR and AoC in f2p market if they follow the LotRO/DDO model for sub game transition to free play with micro transactions.

Well, let's "hope" there won't be any golum pets because f2p/p2p/hybrid, whatever, I would be gone if that happened!
Other than that, if the game goes in a direction that is acceptable, no harm, no foul.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
They could have merged servers if people are playing on low population ones. Thats just an excuse to bring in cash shops.
Give it two years after F2P launch and you could have a 'Mini Nazgul Me' pet who knows? Gollum pets would be the end of the game, but after they sold you stat buffs and xp potions what is left to sell?
Ok so let me tell you why i think LOTRO is going the right way
1. The points shop adds more Value to the game play, i find it intresting way of play ,for thos who pay it won't change anything coz they are VIP.
2. I don't mind paying Turbin in the shop , coz if i pay it will help the game and what they are selling wich is no ( Advanced game Gear ) makes it fair deal, XP bosst ppl already buy it from other sites (power lvling) , it's better to make ppl pay turbin for that so they can make us new Content and it will help the game not waste thir money on other sites wich do no good for the game.
3. making F2T game as we should call it will make ppl play and see the game for what it is , since Trail don't really give u a true View on the game play at early lvls , and LOTRO do need more ppl .
4. making it F2T or not ppl are ppl if they pay or not , you'll find good and bad ppl in all games , and kins can allways chose who can stay and be good with his kines and respect the game and who should get kicked .
5. i can now still see my friends talk to them lvl an alt even when am not geting payed this month or am short on money to spend on my gameing time .
I'm not too concern about LoTRO turning F2P. The good thing is the number of new players it will bring. I really feel sorry sometimes when going in noob areas and seeing it totally empty.
The thing I'm a fraid, is the cash shop, and how Turbine will adapt the game towards the cash shop.
If a new boss needs a fellowship of players using cash shop heals, just for example, well, that would be sad
Most of that is unfounded speculation. Turbine is not Gpotato. This is a AAA MMG that is 3ed in the west that is going free to play with an item shop. Turbine has been nothing but respectful to the IP and the DDO conversion shows they know how to do a cash shop with out cheapening a game.
This is TURBINE, one of the forefathers of this industry, in fact, they are responsible for most "standard" features of the mmos we play and enjoy today (Hows that GUI working for you?). They were the pioneers then, and are continuing to be so now.
I don't share your view that Turbine have been respectful to Tolkien's work and many agrees with me.
What kind of a free game is this if it's only the starter area thats free?!
No thanks, Turbine!
Try again next year and so forth.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

ITs not, the entire epic quest line is there for the doing, for free. Turbine has been respectfull, its based on the BOOKS, not the movie. The movies that LEVET OUT KEY CHARATERS, such as Tom, but that turbine has included, LOTRO even has the correct ending to the fellowshop series, and they havent even gotten to mordor yet.
People on this site need to be more informed before damming games.

I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this. Foundations of stone, with the nameless creatures that look like something from Alien Vs Preditor, world eaters globsnagas and other creaters in that zone. I have a rune keeper and I will tell you that is lore breaking but I still enjoy it.

All based off the descriptions in the books, or if briefly mentioned, created. This is the case for nameless ones.

Ok, not to sound all hyper sensitive but I resent all the talk of "there goes the community", like we can't handle a few rowdies? We are adults, mostly mature, we are NOT going anywhere, so why would the community change that much? Seriously, THINK.
As for 'Lore vs. non-Lore', more people should read all the books and notes. While there are a some lore breakers in the game, Turbine does it's best to follow Lore where it can, and some people argue about things that actually are mentioned. Meanwhile, some things are not MMO-able, and that has to be taken into account as well, since this is an MMO, thus breaking with Lore, out of a Reality vs. Fiction point of view.
*shrug* I like the game overall. Just as I like the extended version of the Movies for the movies, not for 'in keeping with the books'.

A few? I've no doubt could be handled. But what is coming is a tidal wave. Having WAY too much experience with F2P games(and their alledged communities) myself, I can tell you that its not likely to be pretty. Unless the established guilds get VERY picky about recruitment, they will end up swamped with the type of 733t kiddies that swarm F2P games.
But it does remain to be seen how things will work out. A good deal depends on how Turbine structures the new system.
It also depends on how much control Turbine retains over such matters. Warner Brothers is not known for a light touch when it comes to matters such as this.
