So you're leveling up on your own, or perhaps just sitting idly somewhere, chatting with a friend, when suddenly it happens. Out of nowhere, someone who is much, much higher level than you strolls up to you and kills you with little effort.
Your heart sinks. You stare at the monitor as your jaw opens in disbelief. Perhaps you even get angry. You just got ganked.
Hi, I was that guy. I just killed you.
Now, please, don't take it personally. I don't really know you, nor do I hold a grudge of any sort against you. You just happened to be in my line of sight, and are part of the opposing faction. (unless this is an open pvp world, then.. you were just unlucky.)
No, I didn't stalk you. This wasn't some elaborate plot against you. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its just business.
Now that you're dead, feel free to rez without being harassed. Your body will remain where it was, and i'll be long gone. I believe that corpse camping and spawn killing are the lowest, most cowardly forms of PvP. But, if I happen to see you again up the road.. then you might want to run. Nah, I won't chase you. But, if you're in my way, then yes, you're dead.
Fighting for your life, and that thrill of not knowing when you might die or get ambushed is what it is all about
It brings a challenge to the game. It is the spice of MMO life.
Do I enjoy killing people who are a lower level than me? Nah.
I just see it as more of a... friendly reminder that yes, this is a PvP zone. You need to be alert at all times.
Please enjoy the rest of the game, and I look forward to meeting you again, once you've leveled up a bit.
My name is Dirk.
and i'm a PvPer.

But... I want to wander aimlessly and unaware in PVP zones. You're taking that freedom away from me... robbing me of my chance to explore the world! I was minding my own business, picnicking with a friend when you showed up and ruthlessly stole our blissful evening. Shame on you. Shame on you, Dirk.

I hate PvPers who attack you, then when you fight back flee, then when you cahse them down into town call Guards and get your instakilled....
Then take their time stealing your items

I think levels should be hidden to the enemy faction on a PvP server and completely hidden to anyone but the player in an open pvp game.

Personally even in open world PVP games, unless the person is of a declared enemy guild I won't kill him if I can tell he is a lowbie and alone. I might run up and harass him a bit, but I let him go.
If they are in an enemy guild and get in my way or even on my tracking. They are surely going to be hunted down though. Unless I'm in a generous mood.
Well Dirk, if you're not getting ganked as much as the other guy then you're playing a very weak PVP game TBH. As you say, knowing you are both the hunted and the hunter is what it's all about. I think players that show aggression are what gaming is all about, and you have to applaud them for what they bring to the game. This really only hold true, though, if that player is just as much a target as you are.
So tell me.........how does it feel.......Personally, I think it's usually a real rush unless I just do something retarded that gets me killed, then I just feel like a noob.
I call Bullsh*t.
First you trot out the tired fight for your life stuff. Then you say "friendly reminder" like you are doing someone a favor.
Nah, you are just stroking your epeen, telling everyone how badass you are because you are a PvPer and trying to find others to agree with you.
Also, you are just itching for someone like me to come along so you can call me a QQing carebear and once again prove how tough you are. Problem with that? How do you know I am not a PvPer who is just tired of all the whiny little wimps who have to brag about supposed skill to cover for the fact that they have no power IRL or in a game?
"Why do we gank?"
Becaus in real life you'd have your pansy ass handed to you, but in the game you can be a "bad ass pvper".
That's why you gank.

Play a real open world PvP-centric MMO without levels and then come back again.
Eyes, your lack of understanding of the design of the game does not constitute psychological issues on Dirk's part.

And yet, Dirk's psychological issues still stand firm.
I read what you wrote, OP. You aren't a ganker.
But.
If this happens in the middle of a lowbie zone, where is lots of quests for the lowbies, what your business there?
What business have a lvl80 night elf rogue on Durotar? If this is the case, you are a ganker. And your are a ganker if you corpse camp someone.
If you kill a lowbie in your way once, and then you go to your business, to the another zone, its fine by me.
But if this happens to the enemy lowbie zone, its called ganking. Are you a lowbie ganker, Dirk?
Any country boy or girl could tell you about the pecking order that chickens have. The stronger chicken pecks the weaker ones to affirm its standing or rank in the flock. That way the chicken is higher up on the cocks list comes time to mate.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
How is it a psychological issue? The game makes certain areas PVP zone. If you enter one, you should be prepared for PvP. If there are no level restrictions and you enter that zone, it's normal that there will be people of higher levels there.
Your issue should be with the developers or, in most cases, with the people who are aware of the mechanics and rules of the game, do not like them, and still pay to play a game they won't enjoy despite fully knowing what they are getting into.
I played Aion. At level 29, I was getting attacked by characters I had no chance of defeating or evading. I unsubbed. I don't fault the players, because not only is the game designed to allow that but it is also designed to reward that.
The same with UO. When AoS reared its ugly head and PvP was gear dependent, I stopped PvPing. I didn't complain about getting ganked byPvPers, I just left the PvP areas.
Conversely, I enjoy the PvP mechanics of EVE and Lineage 2. I have plenty of ways to safeguard myself from or have achance against overwhelming PvP attacks.
Don't blame the players for playing the game as it is designed. Blame the players who know the design, do not like it and still play it to their own frustration and aggravation.

Yes, and humans should definately emulate chickens, because we all know chickens have that incredible big brain of theirs, all those cunning smarts, and whether we want to admit it or not, they really do rule the world.
As for high level gankers in low level quest zones: go away, kid, you're bothering me.

Mnnnn, I love the smell of trolls in the morning.
So.. does getting killed in a game really turn people into such angry, cynical gamers?
I'll be the first to admit, yes, I die, quite a lot in PvP games. ^_^ Thats part of the fun and the challenge.
I've tried the 'leveling' types, and even the open ended 'sandbox' types, and I love them all the same.
For me, its not ego, or even the size of my 'epeen', whatever the hell that is o.0 Its just a playing style.
Not meaning to anger anyone with this thread, though I know in these forums its quite impossible. You can say "I enjoy vanilla ice cream" and still have 50 posts of angry, hot-tempered people who have nothing better to do than argue with you.
I'm only curious of the mindset of my fellow PvPers out there.
Ah, but I am one of your fellow pvpers. I just don't go out of my way to gank low levels and call that pvp. It's not. It's just griefing.
And as for your vanilla icecream preference, it just shows what kind of lame, no imagination, themepark style, carebear-centric, boring person you really are. Why, even vanilla icecream with bits of ground up vanilla bean in it is subpar, and anyone who sullies a spoon with it deserves to spend thousands of dollars in the cash shops of korean grinders.

+2 ......
You're a freaking genius.
Game design is only one side of the arguement.
There are games, albeit fewer these days, where the game is open world FFA PvP, however it's not encouraged, simply a choice.
Back in the day, Ultima Online was a perfect example of this, in it's pre Trammel days. It was a very telling social experiment that proved that some people will behave their absolute worst when they can get away with it, or with minimal consequences.
And still, this does not explain in any way, shape, or form, the players who are in PvP games, who go out of their way to harrass other players via the game mechanics. Corpse camping, stalking, etc. To the point where it's almost as if they want the other person to quit the game.
Which is the truly ironic part about it, because it's usually these same players who complain there's not enough people around to kill, when they've driven everyone else off.
While psychological issues may be too strong a term, douchebag is not. I really get tired of seeing the 'that's the way the game was designed' argument, as it's not really an argument but a lame excuse for people treating other people like shit.
Yes, you can gank a lowbie if the game allows it, just like you can cut in line at the grocery store or any number of other inconsiderate actions that aren't technically illegal. Should you, though?
Clearly, if you're a richard-head like the OP, the answer is yes. Not only that, but you should also illustrate your narcissicism by posting about it.
Ganking is not a complex behavioral pattern that requires any sort of explanation, least of all from the ganker. It's an act of selfish douchebaggery, nothing more, nothing less, and everyone here already knows this.
The only times I have ganked wasn't on purpose and although I have probably participated on some corpse/rez killing, I am personally not a fan of it. I have even helped people I have ganked finish their quests. Like tanking the boss mob of the quest for a group of lowbies. There has been a few times I and some others have ganked just to get our position out on the chat to get higher levels out into the fight.
In a game like WAR or AION ganking is just a part of life, where there are areas of more dramatic level change right near each other. In WoW and some other games it is easier to avoid. Depending on your definition of ganging. I remember me and my buddy being able to kill two gankers 10 levels above us. Generally people who are trying to gank are not very skilled at their class.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
This. This right here.
I believe that this is the root of the evil, that gives PvPers a bad name.
I believe that if you're going to fight someone, it needs to be within the games' terms.
Hate me for being a douchebag, a low-level killer, or a big-headed, self serving bastard all you like.
But, I take that all with a smile, knowing that i've never taken advantage over a glitch, hack, or other questionable means to achieve my victory.
I hate that argument too, its right up there with "she dresses sexy, she deserved to get raped". Gankers are part of the new generation of young men who have had the rug pulled out from under them. Its not PC to be a man anymore, and all those ways boys used to take their natural aggression out on each other plays out in MMOs. You cant throw a rubber playground ball at someones head in gym class anymore, you can't brawl with your friends at school with getting expelled, hell whens the last time you saw a decent male role model for our young men?
Of course this generation is going to act out, theyre practically neutered in every other aspect.
One high player ganking a lowbie is nothing really but It do piss low players off but try being a lowbie and ganked by a full damn team of high players "AoC" now that will make any lowbie quit and move on. I was that low lvl of 13 in AoC and was being harrash and torture by lvl 25s in a group but I did not quit the game "can not do that, its a great game" I just quit that area for leveling and stuck with none pvp zones to lvl. Got my payback at lvl 25 but still had to deal with a massive zerge of ganking that can not defend by them self and whats really fuck up is the fact we have really good pvpers that don't even need a team to kickass but they still roll in groups with the sorry as pvpers is a major fail.
