State of UO?

How is Ultima Online right now? Is anyone actually subscribed (not a free shard). How is the new expansion that recently released. Is EA putting any effort into the game, or just milking whatever players are left?

I was wondering about the new expansion myself? Any good?  Trying to find something to tie me over until SW:TOR comes out. :)

    Played: DAoC 6 years, WoW 2 years, Ultima/EQ 1+ years, AoC/Aion/Rift/SWTOR a few months
Tried: Warhammer, EQ2, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Runes of Magic and many, many others...
    Currently Playing: DAOC

OSI / EA Player here. I played from 1997 - 2001 then picked it back up in 2008 till now.

Ultima is still awesome.  And EA is putting a lot of effort into the game just like any recent MMO. Constant updates and game tweaks, lots of live events, and limited time quests for rare, powerful items that are only available for a week to a month.

Ultima Online is very much so still a THRIVING MMORPG. Their is a great community - from new to returning players, and veteran players that kept there account active since 97'.

The recent expansion, The Stygian Abyss, is a great expansion, second to only Renaissance. Added a lot of elements to the game including the largest, most pleasurable dungeon -The Abyss -, a new race - Gargolyes -, and the most profound addition being the crafting skill Imbuing. No longer will you needlessly make random magically enchanted gear through runics. Now you can craft gear to your specifications, but its not cheap and it has a limited durability (about 6 months of play per item till breaking i'd say, and i mean PLAYING). However for an experienced player they are easy to make.

I PvP a lot in factions too. Generally, solo PvP's kind of dead as two experienced players will usually end up in a stalemate for a long time till 1 runs out of items or the other gets lucky (hits several times in a row, other guy lags, other guys a noob ect.). But you can still make it Solo espeically if your a resourceful fighter (using everything available in the game), and group PvP around Yew Gate is almost always going on, as well as Fel Champ spawns.

My first MMO was UO, then I played Star Wars Galaxies till the Combat Upgrade (which completely ruined the game, bad Sony Entertainment, BAD!), then WoW for several years, and then came back to UO... Best desicion I've ever made. I love UO and it keeps me coming back for more with new additions to the game for instance:

Soon Factions will be everywhere, YES everywhere - KILL people in TRAMMEL!

Pffft. Yeah, right. Thriving community? HA! More like a grape dying on the vine. UO's community consists of mostly gold farmers and speed hackers. The game is OVERRUN with bugs, exploits, hacks, and is basically falling apart. Starting a new charatcer is practially impossible considering the outrageous costs of everything, which sends most, if not all, new players into the clutches of gold farmers. The economy is shot, completely.

EA has done nothing to fix any of the problems the game has been suffering from since AOS and things continue to degrade. As for the "new race", gargolyes are over powered and currently dominate EVERYTHING. Playing as anything else is pointless. Artifacts still dominate every aspect of the game. Play a garg in full arti suit and youre practially in god mode.

Skill are STILL dependent on power scrolls. Unless youre 120.0% in a skill, its worthless. GM still means nothing. Crafting is uttlery pointless, even with Imbuning, because artifacts are still king. Not to mention many of the skills that were completely gimped when AOS came out are still broken and useless.

The post above reads like a press release from EA typed up by one of their developers, packed with lies and empty self promotion. Bascially, no one can believe a word of it. The truth is, UO is dead. There is one hope for it, but EA is too arrogant and flat out STUPID to do it. The game is run by morons who still, STILL, think they can make UO into a 12 million subscription a month WoW killer. UO was never meant to be mainstream, it was meant to be niche, and the second EA strayed from that path with UO, they doomed it.

Bottom line: The State of UO = dead

First of all when was the last time you played UO, recently, with the expansion, server population has risen. What server did you play?

If you put a fire out are you making it worse or better? depends on whether your a pyromaniac or you want to put it out doesn't it? Is Ultima worse or better off than it was before? Whose to say? I'd say it's a different game.

I don't see any bugs, compared to free servers 2/3's of EA’s user base is afraid to use exploits for fear of getting banned, so ricockulous cheaters are few and far between. If you think there is a game without cheaters your delusional.

Artifacts don't 'dominate', nor have they ever. Crafted gear and Imbued gear are the yin to artifacts yang. You need as many Artifact pieces as you do Crafted/Imbued. Also crafting is not dead due to imbuing. You can only make items up to 500 enchantment points with imbuing, but can get to 800 with crafting. So making God items through crafting is very much so still a part of the game.

I don’t see the problem here…Powerscrolls are easy to get. Artifacts are easy to get. Crafted gear is HARD HARD HARD to get. If you only used Artifacts and your complaining about getting them, then it just shows your inexperience at the game.

When it comes down to it, UO's about money. You never figured out how to make butt loads of money (and there are lots of ways). I make over 100 million gold every month, which is enough to buy everything you'd ever really need for 1 if not 2 or 3 toons.

It seems like you were just noobtastic at this game and could never fully enjoy its benefits. You never overcame the game to realize how easy it is. You’re like a beginner guitar player who just gave up cause you couldn't hold a power cord off the bat.

Or I'm an Open minded person, maybe you just have sand in your because the game has changed so much since 97'?

Bottom line: You talk out your ***.

Majority of what you said is a lie, noobtastic, or outdated. Anyone that plays the game today would read your post and think you are a noob.

Your pro or your a noob. Thats Life.

I am a avid role-player so game mechanics usually don't matter to me and from a role-playing standpoint, yes, the game is basically dead.. I have been role-playing on Europa for years and even before Ultima Online, I was a roleplayer, we use to have a huge, massive, thriving RP community on Europa and today it is not even half the size of what it used to be, it has shrunk within the last 3-4 years by tenfold, many, many players have abandoned the game and have moved on.. The game was founded by roleplayers, people who were fans of the original ultima games and those who roleplayed in games like Dungeons & Dragons, but all the kiddies came in and treated the game as if it were just another counterstrike..

Uh. There is still lots of people playing this game. i never have a issue finding people on. Great Lakes is one of the most popular shards. If you want to play the game with people, go on there.
