So sad....
Apparently THQ feels skimming 1 million WoW users is the best route to take...
http://www.massively.com/2010/07/01/war40k-courts-1-million-users-wow-players/
But on the upside, if you are a WoW fanatic and a WAR40k fan maybe you will have something new to do for a couple of weeks...

This cant be true................ (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
What I find most pathetic is the fact that this guy isn't even targeting the general MMO genre only WoW players...
That is just...hahaha...at least these guys aren't lying about there intentions anymore.
I can see it now. Tons of videos of Space Marines doing the "Macrarena". Orks and Chaos Marines doing a Britney Spears-esque dance routine. A grenade that gives you a Dark Eldar Wych Topknot.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Idk... I find it hard to believe. I read in a pc gamer a few months back, and they did an article on 40k with one of the guys of Vigil. He said that the game was very low budget and that if they got 500k-1mil subs in the first year, they would be set for multi. expansions.

He said WOW players would find the game easily accesible
IMHO I guarentee this applies to the UI.
Even if it applies to the PvE/PvP structure, there is no chance they are going to leave it as is.
As far as reigning in 1 million WOW players. Thats the least any MMO could hope for, it really means nothing.
That being said...who cares, if they screw it up...ultimately they lose out.
Plus the maket that exists when this game releases is going to be a whole nother animal with games like GW2, TERA, and Rift hoping to shake things up. Their crazy if they go WOW clone and expect 1million subscribers.
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
Say goodnight.
You guys just killed yourselves with that one interview.
Welcome to the failed wow clone shelf next to Lotro, WAR, AoC & Aion.
I guess we havent had enough wow clones totally fail with under 150k subs yet aye?
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I'm not going to count the game out yet simply because when articles come out like that, and have two or three sentences of quotes, I wonder how much stuff was cut out. and how does the developer feel about how what he said is portrayed. Should a developer want a slice of the subscriber base? Yeah, if they aren't planning on being competition, then they shouldn't even make a game, cause to challenge the big dog in the yard, you have to bring something to the table.
Just remember you can't fully trust the media, they are in the industry of swaying opinion. What if for five minutes the guy talked about how they have things in the game that they see alot of WoW players asking for that the WoW just can't deliver due to game design, then said that.
then again it could be what it is, but I'm not going to trust it cause it was on the internet. But thats just cause I'm dumb, everyone knows if it made onto the internet it must be true.
My Thoughts on Content Locust
Really curious as to how this means it's a WoW clone. He said that he's targeting their audience, which means a good chunk of the MMO population nowadays. He also could mean some things similar to WoW, but every MMO now and after WoW are considered a derivative from WoW. It's really retarded that people see WoW in any interview consider it a WoW clone.
All in all, nothing is for certain. Lets just wait and see where this goes before we start making judgements.
Everyone has opinions, but does that make them the universal truth??? NO!
Ummm please explain how those are WoW clones? I bet everything your going to says is what every other MMO known to man has.
Everyone has opinions, but does that make them the universal truth??? NO!
Im pretty happy that they dont cater to the bitter "hardcore" people on this forum!
Looking forward to try this MMO and hope it turns out great.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Where in the interview does he say dark millennium is going to be a wow clone? He said He would like a million subs and that WoW could stand to lose a few of its subs to boost the warhammer 40k subscriber base. Ever MMO developer wants a piece of that WoW subscription base and if anyone says different then they are full of crap. Perhaps you should actually read the damn article before you come here and blast it because WoW was mentioned in the article. Then again I have seen the OP troll just about every game on these forums so this is no surprise.
Warp
I'm hoping this is just reading too much into the statement. After all, the video showed a glimpse of what appeared to be 3rd person shooter gameplay.
Personally I like judging and making assumptions about a game that wont be out for 3 years... I mean anything I read now MUST be word for word exactly what the game will be like when its released...
And who wouldnt want to copy a dumbed down, easy to use UI etc. This might be just me but i have demo'd/beta'd games that had a horrible UI and that turned me off. WoW has a very user friendly setup so the tarded masses they bring in can deal with it, same reason why they never upgrade their horrible graphics, b/c then people might not be able to upgrade their PCs and continue to feed them money =P
Not overly encouraging in the way he goes on about WoW. But its no different to the ToR lead dev Gordon Walton who gave a presentation about what ToR (and other MMOs) could learn from WoW and what we are trying to emulate.
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15386
This came off as a very sobering read for someone that had hoped ToR would be something great, instead to find a lead designer was inlove with Blizzard.
Agreed. If you haven't noticed the same behavior is found in politics, which if you trace the roots, is mostly to blame why we have a bunch of id-10-t's running our country.
An article comes out, someone posts it to be read, then attaches their opinion on the content of the article. Rather than read it, seems to me most just subscribe to the initial opinion as containing relevant information in regards to initial article that is never read. Thus begins the illiterate snowball effect. A flurry of compunded ignorance based solely off of opinion.
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
I still think he said nothing ground breaking. I mean, okay? Who doesn't want to get rid of some of WoW's subs? isn't that the standarrd?
Don't jump to conclusions people.
Pepsi1028
PEPSI!!!!!
Get out of your box already...
It is disheartening to see people want to follow so closely to what WoW is, but Blizzard has done a great job bringing in and keeping a huge playerbase, which is what companies are trying to do, so of course other team's designers will be drooling over what the people at blizzard have accomplished. And no i dont play WoW, i actually hate it now, but gotta give credit to blizzard for the freak monster they have created =P
Yeah, I would love to hear the explaination too. None of those games are WOW Clones. If anything, WOW is a WAR Pen and Paper clone that has evolved and a clone of EQ1. Gone down this road many times before on these forums but it never stops amusing me.
WOW did not invent the current standards. Almost everthing in WOW was being done by other MMOs before it in one way or another.
"They've got 14 million players! Gimme a million and I'm good! We're real good at a million, right?" We don't need everybody to migrate. We just need some of them -- and I'm full confident we're going to get them," he said.
How did this go for WAR, SWG NGE, LOTRO, Aion, and any other game I missed that decided to try to copy WoW gaemplay.
Well, at least I know now to stop following the game.
True, but WOW made everything extremely accessible. You need know nothing about computers to play WOW.
That is what WOW did for mmo's accessability
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
somehow in your post you equate addition and subtraction to gameplay? Im confused
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
This is good news.
1. WoW has a good efficient easy to use interface. Making theirs similar is a good thing, means game can be learned quickly.
2. He's used to playing wow and says this is very similar in play styles so transition is easy. I don't want to read a manual, this is good.
3. Game had twitch based targeting reticle combat. Thinking it is going to play like wow is kinda dumb considering the gameplay we've seen already.
I am looking forward to this game even more now. I'm glad all the wow haters wont be playing, less jerks to deal with at launch.
Never violate a woman, nor harm a child. Do not lie, cheat or steal. These things are for lesser men. Protect the weak against the evil strong. And never allow thoughts of gain to lead you into the pursuit of evil. Never back away from an enemy. Either fight or surrender. It is not enough to say I will not be evil. Evil must be fought wherever it is found. The Iron Code"
Yes and everyone that likes WoW must be the nicest people right?
Everyone has opinions, but does that make them the universal truth??? NO!
I am out.
