After my most recent cancellation of my WoW account (I can only do so much grinding), I decided to try and give EvE another try.  I noticed that the tutorials have gotten an overhaul and I must say, the game really is MUCH better.  I certainly didn't feel lost and the game's price make's it a steal to own and play.

    Good for you!  :-)

Yes, since they revamped the tutorial, the game is a lot more accessable.  Fortunately, it's still far too deep and difficult for many of the community from that game you cancelled to follow.   The community is very interesting and very diverse in Eve, but for the most part, (and I mean this) the people are much more helpful, and much more mature.   The game is indeed cold, harsh, and unforgiving, but that's the nature of the game.   If you accept that, and embrace it, you'll find that even the people who kill you and take your stuff are sometimes kind enough to teach you some aspects of the game that will help you, and perhaps buy you replacements.

Word of advice, though, - get into an active Corporation and the fun is limitless.    Solo play can be fun, but takes far more experience with the game dynamics to be beneficial.    In a harsh place like EvE, it really pays off to have people on your side.

I've played for many years and there's things I still learn every day.

This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.

Well, I think the cold harsh environment would get warmer once they come out with Incarna.  It's a feature that lets you walk in stations, so now every player actually has a character

  • mm0wigginsmm0wiggins Member Posts: 270

Well, Incarna has been in the works for quite a while, and I don't think there's an official release date or schedule for that matter.

I am looking forward to it though. I think it will impact Eve harder than most take into consideration, and not in a bad way.

This video shows a glimpse of their ambition in terms of graphical standards -

and this one is of station and avatar gameplay

*For entertainment and creative purposes of course, we can't jump to conclusions off these videos alone considering they are not tied in any official status to any content currently released or upcoming builds of Eve.  In other words, this is all work in progress, old news, and rough draft.. that sort of thing.

I think they are on the right track, though.  CCP is very bold, daring, and intelligent.  3 things the industry desperately needs right now.

Glad you're back and enjoying it :) I had to give EVE 3 different tries before I really "got it"...now I'm about to start flying a T3 cruiser and I have to admit that I'll probably never cancel my EVE subscription (except when I get to the point that I can earn enough ISK to buy PLEXs for game time).

Currently playing: LOTRO, Guild Wars 2.
Have played: EVE Online; Champions Online; Age of Conan; City of Heroes/Villains; Star Wars Galaxies (pre-CU, pre-NGE); World of Warcraft (Vanilla to Cataclysm); Hellgate: London; Warhammer Online; Lord of the Rings Online; Vanguard: Saga of Heroes; Star Wars: The Old Republic
    Wishlist: Mass Effect Online

    Thanks hehe.

Yeah, it's really clicking for me.  The only problem I have now is SO much to do and so little time hehe.

I'm still training in all directions, so it's taking me longer to get to my cruiser, but the Sisters of EvE Epic Arc is a fantastic way for a newbie to gather up gear, ships and cash.  I mean, I lost a catalyst yesterday (earned during the epic arc) and had enough cash to replace it.  Disparaged that I'd lost that much money (insurance doesn't cover the stuff you put in a ship unfortunately hehe), I kept on going and within 24 hours have recovered almost all that I had lost/spent.

This game is definately for people looking for something different, away from the grind, and who are not afraid to actually read the missions (something I have to remind myself to do from time to time).

I've joined a corp called Gun Metal Haven.  They seem like pretty friendly folk and are newbie friendly.

All in all, I only wish I had more time to play cause I can't get enough of this game hehe.

Sounds like you're off to a fun start :) Regarding losing ships, etc:

General rule of EVE is "Never fly what you can't afford to replace". So your example of the Catalyst loss is great, but make sure you have cash to replace anything you're flying. For example when you get into a cruiser, remember that the cost of the ship's hull + equipment should only take out HALF of your wallet, at most.

Also, remember insurance, the lowest level doesn't cost that much and is better than nothing.

    Safe flying to you!

I love almost everything about the game, but I have never been able to really enjoy the combat. It is too slow paced and I don't feel like I have good control over my ship in terms of maneuvering. If only the combat were a bit more enjoyable, I would probably play EVE for years...

It does take a bit of time to get used to since it's so very different in how it handles to most MMOs in that you have fully three dimensions you can go in. Once you get used to it with a bit of practice it can be insanely powerful. I don't know how long you played for or what kind of play you did or do mainly so I can't recommend anything.

What is it that is creating problems for gaining control over your ship? Is it the fact that some of the objects' collision actually occurs farther out than what you can see?

What kind of combat are you engaging in?

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

Excellent! I hope you enjoy EvE :) You're reminding me of my newbie days years ago though we didn't have epic arcs back then and it was a struggle starting out.

    cens..

MMORPG trend that kills me is this idea that MMOrpgs need to be designed
in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOrpgs.
People that like single player game stay there
    Dont ruin my mmorpg....
