Does a browser game suit this great IP?

Star Wars Galaxies was ruined first with the NGE and SWTOR will be WoW in SW-disguise. Star Trek got wasted aswell pretty bad and Stargate Worlds... yeah

Now Battlestar Galactica is the next SciFi IP to get ruined?

Do you think that a browser game will be anything good for that IP?

i dunno, I wouldn't count it out just for being a browser game.  look at earth eternal...sure its kinda child like but proves you can have a good quality game through a browser.   Another good example is the cartoon network game fusion fall.  both these games i checked out for my kid, but was surprised at their complexities.

No. I'm pissed. I hope Edward James Olmos storms the office and hands out beatdowns.

It has to be better than the XBLA game...

I demand that one of the big devs make a full-blown Battlestar Galactica MMORPG game!!!

They can make it prior to the series, during the cylon wars, before the false peace.

The IP doesn't fit MMOs, that's the real issue.

I know people are getting to the point where they want to see every single IP they're interested in become an MMO, but a lot just aren't setup for it (although it raises the question of will companies/writers etc go out of their way to make sure their new IPs fit MMOs so they can make more money off of them).

BSG had 1 group of humans in a fleet together, how the hell does that equat an MMO? They were either sitting there, traveling to a planet to be disappointed, or being attacked by Cylons. Don't get me wrong, I loved the modern day version of BSG on TV, but it is not at all suited for MMOs.

    NO!

The degradation of great IP's has just begun. Everytime I think of a new game coming out I can;t shake the feeling of being in a trailer home house of ill repute with the third string ladies working. With this game it seems all of those ladies forgot to shower this week and the humidity is 99%.

The suits need to back off and let companies make great games or crappy ones BUT let the workers decide not safe little buggers in safe little offices playing safe little number games. I remember when people got together and made games they liked to play for fun and profit. Now:

1 Buy IP, look at traget market, spin machine

    2 ?????????

    3 Profit!

SWG, VSoH, STO, AoC, CO and so many, many more the list keeps getting longer and my wallet stays SHUT. Why did I not buy STO? Because it was terrible the same reason I did not buy CO, or VSoH. Make a great game and I will buy into it but the key is MAKE A GREAT GAME! The sad thing is even unknown IP's like 9 Dragons could be awesome with the rigth programmers and artists. When a company gets ti vision from numbers and profit margins we lose creativity and excellence and replace it with sub standard games and a general dumbing down of gameplay. Sorry but considering the past I have NO HOPE for this game other than a "hey lets try it out for an hour, yep it sucks, move along." Excellence is not a target in this day and time in the game industry that is why I left it running and screaming...I rarely regret leaving it.

PS I have heard the VSoH is running really well now, but the mishandling at launch killed it. Again suits....suits know how to run numbers NOT make games!!! Let the pros make them, sit back and market what they have done AFTER they have finished it you morons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The IP is set before series starts, that's how you fit it into an MMO.

Before the show, there was a human/cylon war.  That is the time period you set it to.

Guilds can build and modify their own battlestars and players can fly vipers during battles or man the stations of the battlestar.

There can me an economy set up for smaller ships to transport cargo among the 12 colonies.  Escort ships could help keep the trade lanes clear.

etc., etc., the devs should be able to come up with something

Yeah some good points - Using this timeline of the IP sounds really stale but I like the idea of the first cylon war where the colonies were still in tact and you could trade between them dodging the cylons.

    EPIC FAIL SAUCE. [shaking head]

This has disaster written all over it.  It's a crying shame too, I would have liked to play a legitmate BSG MMO.

I am pretty pissed that this is not going to be a fully developed mmorpg. The IP brings so much potential to it, I am really shocked no one wants to make an mmorpg out of it.

to be honest I dont see how to make this into an RPG, that show was so story driven with massive political and religeous undertones, it just cant be done.

Its not like you can fight for territory, establish new colonies etc or negotiate peace.

At best it could of become a great game in the lines of homeworld or a new take on the wing commander series.

History tells us that movie studios know nothing about game development, and who is good.  They probably went with the cheapest quote and signed them.  This has nothing but pure fail written all over it, me being a huge fan of the series will stay away from any "browser based" games.  Eff Facebook.

All of the big name games fail to live up to the hype. Some of them are decent games, but the name brings too many expectations. When they aren't met (they never are) the IP actually stands to lose valuable customers. Wow and EQ work because they don't have these preconceived expectations. Star Wars might be able to break this .. Im hoping (not because I am personally going to play it, I most likely won't for other reasons) it does because I like Bioware and would hate to see Star Wars ruin them. I think the issue might actually come down to the player base. You start out with all of these people who think they know everything about game and the story being all pompous and such .. and a bunch of stray MMOers looking for various levels of enjoyment, and the 2 groups never mesh. An IP game has to be able to transend the IP, which i'm not sure it can actually do.

Star Wars is the best example. A lot of people want to be the only jedi left. The savior. Well, that can't happen can it? In games with lore that has evolved from other games players get that they win some and lose some .. that they evolve. A lot of the movie fans want to log in, spend an hour or two, and be the hero of the game. MMOs don't work like that.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

Browser games have come a long way,and will only get better. Don't count it out at all until  you've played it and proven to  yourself beyond doubt that it's a bad thing.

  • canibusclubcanibusclub Member Posts: 84

I can tell you that I will not be playing it. I don't play those browser games. I did mess around on myspace a few years ago with those mobster games, but I had a couple of friends that kept sending me these invites.

Yea, this is not the best route to take for this game, but whatever. I hope that more companies don't decide that this is the best option.

BSG would make a great single player game with optional multiplayer fleet battles and pvp. Something kinda like Freelancer.

lol dude reject a game before u play them ( BSGO/TOR). looks like u have been around mmorpg.com for awhile, probably longer then me by the looks of it, yet  it doesn't seem like you played enough MMOs to under stand the simple concept  of not judging a game by its cover. Any who, the base line for most game publishers is to make money.  So yeah, try it before you buy it , its a simple concept right?

  • PNM_JenningsPNM_Jennings Member UncommonPosts: 1,093

it may not suit it but it's the only way it could be. this way you have a fun bsg fix without the problems inherent in meddling with the lore.

I kind of think the same, not to shoot it down (well maybe a bit), but I honestly don't see how they can make this into an MMO while retaining the feel of the series.

As SnarlingWolf said, BSG has a very limited amount of humans and soldiers fighting off overwhelming numbers of Cylons and going from planet to planet discovering the truth behind their exile and other philosophical questions, I don't see how that can be reproduced in an MMO; and even if it could, I don't think it would be that interesting to play.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

yeah but the problem is that in BSG cylons controls all colonised planets ... where do character play ? and if they miss the BSG warp out are they lost forever?
