I would say start with Barbarian or fighter unless you are a soloer then start with cleric.
Yes the dungeons are filled with monsters, they are instanced so when you go in the instance starts. There are outdoor areas that have monsters and all the races from the game in some but they are not bandits to hunt like you might have in Vanguard or something which has an open world. Even the outdoor areas are instanced. The town areas have other people but no killable NPCs.
The PVP is rarely used and poorly created. This is a huge plus to me as good PVP takes time and thought to be created well and DDO devs have no time for that. You can do PVP in taverns and there is a challenge system to challenge random people but I doubt I am the only one with that option removed from his characters.
For a new player I would say a Human Fighter is straight forward. An alternative would be a Human Cleric. You get two slots as a free player, if I'm not mistaken, and both classes would be good for a new player.
Some dungeons can be entirely cleared out while others have respawns.
The explorer areas have a kill count thing called "slayers" where you can hunt rare named mobs which frequently have something good. While doing slayers you'll earn a decent amount of exp to help level up your character.
The pvp is just in passing. It is not a ladder ranked system and there are no benefits or penalties associated with it. There are two different settings for pvp, "tavern brawls" and a sanctioned battleground. The battleground, that's not really the name of it, can be a lot of fun with the right people. You fill your group, rigght click on the group list and "convert to pvp" then chose who's on the Red Team and Blue Team. You have to be at a special NPC who will then allow you to chose betwenn Capture the Flag or a Death Match with something like 5 or 6 different maps. The game is not balanced around PvP so don't be surprised if someone is crazy powerful - this game should also NEVER be balanced for PvP.
Best advice I can give is to take your time and actually play the nooby content on Korthos island before throwing in the towel. If you make it off the island and think the game has more to offer I would suggest to find a guild of people in your age group and playstyle. A guild makes this game a lot more fun.
If you have questions don't hesitate to ask. Some of us who post here might not always pull punches but we'll still answer questions to the best of our ability.
I think monk(will have to buy it) barbarian, fighter, or wizard is a good starting class. You can buy hirelings, so you don't need to worry about heals.
My advice is don't think you can be an AC tank as a new character. It takes a lof of planning, and even more grinding. AC is good until level 10. Then you will need to have a massive amount, and you're not going to get a massive amount of AC as a new player. Concentrate on DPS on your first toon. Get lots of cash and gear, and you can twink another toon if you want to try for AC.
The biggest problem for newbs is building a toon. My advice is to just stick to feats that allow maximum DPS. TWF/THF, Power Attack, Weapon Focus, Toughness(needed for toughness enhancements), are all excellent low level melee feats.
Learn to use hirelings. So many players don't use hirelings. The cleric one is very good. At later levels the wizard is nice for buffs if you can heal yourself, and keep him alive(no easy task).
The most easier class to start with is clerics whether its F2P or P2P. Noted a real pure healer rather than a battle clerics using 2H greatsword. The other classes are all with similar difficulties.
If you dont enjoy healing other players, it'd better not to take this path. Many people rolling a clerics thinks they could fight and heal but actually clerics is the worse class in melee. Clerics is the best healing class, and there are many offensive spells. It will never be using 2 handers or dual weild.
Why cant they use two weapons or a two hander? If you splash a couple of monk levels Kamas or Handwraps can be effective on a cleric and if you take a fighter level using a two handed weapon gets the most bang for your buck. '
I am currently rolling a cleric/monk and plan to use Q-Staff on him so a cleric with a two hander is just fine.
Yes, clerics are melee capable. DDO is so melee centric game everything is melee capable. Even pure wizards. Actually even pure wizards make better melee than cleric.
The only way to raise from the very bottom is to take divine might, which requires crippling investment into charisma and directly reduces your healing potential.
Not to mention from mid game on, clerics are kiters which does not work well with melee (unlike wizards who can stay put without crippling their real source of DPS). Clerics are a mess of a class, hybrid without feats to go hybrid and without synergy, class with no class features, caster that has no offense until mid level and barely any relevant casting enhancements, tough armored guys with worst melee and bad saves (because contrary to PnP, reflex matters most). Yes they can ress for free and heal other gimped fleshlings, thats all there is to them, heralded kings of gimps. And even then Favored Souls do it all but better.
If you need healing, buy a hireling and save yourself the frustration when you later realize clerics are gradually becoming worse and worse melee until they end up being the worst.
The class is in high demand but it is poorly designed - maybe those two facts are interconnected.
How does taking charisma reduce your healing potential? The more you speak of DDO the less I think you spent time playing it. I would never suggest anyione go 20 charisma on a cleric for divine might but reaching a 16 or 18 is not hard and does nothing to hurt healing. If anything it helps since you could have more Divine Healing if you take that enhancement.
Clerics are not primary melee, but until you get good offensive spells anyone can use them effectively. Low level melee in this game is easy and DDO has made the game even easier for the ones who struggle killing Kobolds.
