I must respectfully disagree. I've had all 8 "claws" dug into my skin and the end result was not very "delicious" as you put it. If I ever end up in Devilicious' neighborhood I'm makin her wear mittens!

I just moved on campus a couple days ago. Lo and behold the apartment does not come with an air conditioner. What made it worse is the fact that it was 98 degrees inside at 12:30 in the morning. Ugh, and 11 windows in the living room and 9 in the bedroom. Not fun.

Get a Holmes window fan with reversible motors like one of these. I use mine in the bedroom. They are available at Target. Set the fans to blow in during the night and out during the day.They also have a model with weather resistant motors.
Get another fan either desktop or stand based and move that around with you during the day. Pay attention to the sound levels of the fans you get. It makes a big difference in 'comfort'. Those Holmes ones are quiet.
Before air conditioning was standard people had whole house fans. These were installed in the ceiling somewhere and were used to pull air into the house and blow it up into a ventilated attic. Can't do that in an apartment though. One way to replicate this is to open windows on the side away from the prevalent wind and put window fans set to blow out. The intention is to move all of the air in the house, not just blow it around in one or two rooms.
Another suggestion that hasn't worked well for me was to reduce the window openings on the side you want air to come in and open them on the side you want the air to go out. This is supposed to have a venturi effect and increase the air flow. As I just said it hasn't worked for me though. Then again my house was built with A/C in mind and not air flow.
