My friend and I played EQ off and on for about 10 years. We enjoyed it very, very much; however, the grind was just too much. To start a character from level 1 and get him to level 85 would take us a year (averaging around 10-20 hours a week). However, we loved the game immensely, so much that I 4 boxed, and he 2 boxed. We had our own group that could take on any group content, up to the last expansion when we quit (last year). I had a war as my main (he was pretty pimp, but not uber guild pimp), ranger, monk, shaman and he played rogue / cleric.
Well, like I said, the grind got to us...too much of it, not fast enough xp, and the fact that it took me 4 characters to do anything effective if I wanted to solo (with the classes I had), and he basically couldn't play unless I was on.
We did the whole guidl thing early on, and that was a blast, but we decided to go solo to focus on the game, killing end content from older levels, to experience it all.
Now, we would like to start a new game. And, amazingly, I only thought there were 2 or 3 mmo's out there that had any fan base (mainly WoW and EQ1...the old days). Wow was I wrong!
I looked at Guild Wars, but man, those character builds seem, well, complex. I looked at perfect world, but it doesn't look like there is really a good duo. (when I say looked, I just mean looked at their site).
So, given my background, we would like a game where we can level fast to get towards the end game, a game where we can play a duo (a duo that can take on any named mob, or at least the vast majority of them pending gear / skill), a game where we can have multiple sessions of the same game running on our computer screens at once to play more than one character at once (sort of contradicts duoing, but we may want to expand later on, and I would like the option), and preferably a game where I wouldn't have to repair my armor every couple hours (I have never payed a game where I had to repair my armor, but it seems like it would suck). Ease of travel would be nice also. Boss mobs (like dragons and giants and gods) would rule....we love killing old school content with higher level players.
For all of you EQ players out there, take a look at the group we played and see if there is anything similar. And, for all the rest, thanks for reading this and let me know what to look at!
Oh, Free would be awesome...I don't think the wifey would put up with paying 60 dollars a month anymore to play a game.
P.S. On a side note, Pocket Legends for the iPad rules

You should really check out - Vanguard Saga of Heroes
DAoC's PvE sounds pretty close to what you want, plenty of named mobs/mini bosses to fight with a duo, or small group. Also plenty of epic encouters(bosses) to get groups together to beat. I personally think it's better then EQ2's or WoW's(I am a minority), but since so many people only play the game for PvP you may have trouble participating in epic encounters unless you find/create a guild that mainly PvE's. You also get the option of some fun PvP for duoing/small man(as long as you can avoid the zerg's/8-mans). Though if you're not into PvP and are looking for a MMO where the PvE shines because of the lack of PvP, then you may want to pass over it.
Btw a DAoC duo is usually 3 characters consisting of 2 players(one guy 2boxing his main char and buff bot) and multi boxing is actually kinda encouraged in DAoC as long as you don't macro.
As of right now, i think I would like to avoid the monthly fee's for 2 boxing, 30 dollars a month isn't expensive, but would make the wifey very unhappy.
And ya, we have 0 interest in PvP.
Lot's of people dual box in WoW
.
In Eve dual or even multi boxing is very common. Most in Eve have multiple accounts.

Ya, I'm more into fantasy style games, sorry.
Simplicity, good graphics, good lots, cool boss / raid mobs to kill, free (or can play multiple accounts at once on one subscription), and the ability to play multiple accounts on one computer is pretty much what I'm looking for.
Vanguard sounds like the best game for you.
All servers just merged into one so it is pretty crowded again for the first time in a long time.
It is more like EQ1 than EQ2 was . ..

I agree, Vanguard might be worth a shot. Realize the game won't progress much further than it is now, though.
It's a great game for small groups, though 2boxing doesn't seem easy as even healer classes have a lot they can do to contribue in groups. I 2 boxed in EQ and had friends that did, and was always very comfortable with it (even in PvP), but I never, ever had a good experience in Vanguard. Usually, if someone was 2boxing their backup healer simply sucked, lol, more of the way the game is than just not having the skill, though.
Leveling isn't too painful even with limited time. The classes are a ton of fun (so much so that even the 2box junkies I know, myself included, were so enthralled with one character we didn't bother). There is a ton of content for leveling up, a lot of it that can be done in small, skilled groups. Hell, I used to solo level appropriate group content on my blood mage (not easy, but doable) and add in any tank and could clear many dungeons in a duo.
And Vanguard feels like the spiritual successor to Everquest. It really does.
And it's not a terrible game, just been put on life support by SOE and won't be getting much love in the future, though there's still plenty of content now (a lot, actually, especially for leveling up several times over without ever duplicating content). And, if you want to keep messing around in EQ, you could just get the station pass as Vanguard is covered by it.
Is a trial, though the trial tries a bit too hard to be accessible and the 'real' game is both better and worse in various ways, of course.
According to a Facebook quiz, I'm a genius.
