What game has the best dungeons?

cmorris975cmorris975 Member UncommonPosts: 207

I am not going to pollute your mind by saying what I already play/have liked.  I am really wanting a great dungeon crawl, preferably with some non-instanced dungeons and random PvP.  Any ideas?

Thanks :)

No game has dungeons that come even close to the dungeons in DDO. They're instanced, though, and there's no PvP. But the dungeons are truly sweet.

I agree on DDO having nice dungeons.  I have been playing EQ2 recently to get my dungeon fix after playing a lot of Darkfall, which has severely underdeveloped dungeons.  Hmm, looks like I should give WoW another try then.  I never liked the cartoony atmosphere but hell, if it has goood dungeons I can look past that.

    Thanks for the replies!

DDO was cool. I enjoyed some of the dungeons in LotRO as well. AoC has some neat stuff and in the expansion they added some pretty cool stuff in the dungeons themselves. I wouldn't really say that WoW has the best dungeons but they do have a lot of interesting boss fights.

DDO their dungeons has traps and stuff to figure out in them not just kill kill kill was a true dungeon

it's a toss up between DDO and Vanguard

DDO:  traps, voice over from a DM, solid stories, varied locations (to a certain extent), classic dungeon crawl feel

Vanguard:  Part of the world (big open world), hugely varied, fluid and open with enough quests to guide you but solid enough mob placement to allow constant action.

No game comes close to those two.  WoW gets an honourable mention for their boss fights but thats about it

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Exactly those 3 come to mind, i think it depends on peoples tatse and flavour which ones they liked best.

Honorable mention, EQ, they had some very interesting dungeons, but espescially some game features that made them memorable, like the death pennalty and the trains. While i hated them back then, they have grown intoo fond memmories.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Based on my experiences my votes would go for DDO and WoW. DDO would be my favorite game if it had just a tiny bit of an open world =(

It is not really relevant these days, but for a mixture of a good dungeon and pvp together, my favorite was Darkness Falls from Daoc. Loved being able to kill some mobs, farm seals, crawl down, and kill any stragglers from the opposing 2 factions, or even hide out to ambush them when my side no longer had control of the place.

ddo was really cool. i mean it SHOULD be cool when they have 'dungeons' in their game name lol.

seriously though in ddo dungeons have traps, puzzles etc... and you get the most exp by beating the dungeon not by killing the monsters. so basically that allows a rogue to really play like rogue should while playing a warrior can be a totally different experience thanks to shiny armor and no ability to dodge/sense and disarm traps/unlock chests etc.

I would agree also that Vanguard's and EQ1's dungeons were good as well.

I wonder if there is enough population in DAoC to make trying that one viable?

I say Vanguard. The dungeons were just as fun exploring as other parts of the world. Also they weren't instanced so you could adventure deep into one and find other groups fighting too. The dungeon were usualy quite large and had plenty of space for a few groups so they didn't feel cramped. There were so many dungeons too and for all level ranges that I don't think I did them all.

DDO has amazingly fun and interactive dungeons. Some of the puzzles are even better then Zelda dungeons.

Imo DDO dungeons are by far the best with the new AoC content being in second place.

DDO dungeons are the best. BUT not the F2P crap ones. F2P is killing this game, and i'm sure most don't realize how much this game has to offer.

    WoW also has the best.

Vanguard is good too, but the population was so low, I could not stick around past level 25 to enjoy more.

Have to say its a toss up between D&D and Vanguard for me.

D&D has some of the most well thought out ones around with some very good traps and hidden stuff to find. No PvP tho.

Vanguard has some good dungeons and they are not instanced so PvP is possable [as is cooperation and maybee backstabing].

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

    WoW, followed closely by DDO.

Say what you want about WoW, but they really know how to design dungeons.  DDO would be the winner if there was more variation in dungeon styles.

    D&D and Vanguard... hands down.

which do you mean.. OLD wow dungeons or NEW wow dungeons.. because there is a HUGE difference in the two..

  • PhryPhry Member LegendaryPosts: 11,004

WoW.. can't really say about the old ones, but the current ones beat all other games hands down, probably why so many people play it.. DDO.. is only dungeons.. but, theres something missing.. wanted to keep on playing it but got bored fast.. and grouping should be easier.. but isnt Blizzard have worked hard on their dungeons.. because they know its probably the main thing that keeps people interested in the game.. now.. if only they'd do something about the cartoon style graphics.. image

I personally liked the burning crusade and wrath of the lich king raids more than vanilla raids, but they were all pretty great in my opinion.

My favorite dungeons to crawl is EQ1.  No matter which mmo I've played since then, I just haven't enjoyed the dungeons as much.  Non-instanced and don't need a full group in stellar gear to get through.
