i don't get it though, wasn't this game a free mod before?  what's so great about it being free now?   wasn't it free before?  how is this any different?

I think the old one was a mod for one of the Unreal games, but they made this new one with the Source engine. I think, I don't know much about the game other than it's free and looks neat. I'm going to give it a shot once it finishes downloading.

It's pretty sweet for a free game. Fun multiplier if you have a few friends to play with. Just got done putting 3 hours into it.

I'm reminded of Alien Breed:Tower Assault so much when I play this :D

    TEAM17 awesomeness on toast.

Well one required you to own a copy of a game that costs money, and this one requires you own nothing, so how is that not better?

    Wow! Is this for real?

There was a time when I'd like a game like this, but as time moves on you come to realise that mindless alien killing gets dull very fast.

Great move by steam though, im sure loads of players would like this, if only for a short time.

It's not free, you first have to install that trashy piece of code called steam, which is worse than paying thousands of $ instead, or getting your tongue pulled out by burning tongs.

    REALITY CHECK

An important note here is that this a very big move by Valve, as along with the game, they've released the Source engine SDK kit for free as well, meaning indie developers will have access to the SDK officially for free for the first time. This is probably a reflection on Epic's decision making with their Unreal SDK, but a great move in any case.

Well for the start, it doesn't do anything, it's useless. Even then, it launches automatically by default at computer startup, it messes up your registry - I had to use registry cleaner and CCleaner to found its bits when I de-installed it. It has its own service that loads up to memory apparently for no reason - even after you uninstalled it. So again, I had to use hijack this to remove it.

In the end, it's useless code with the following traits: slows down your computer, messes up your registry and is very hard to uninstall it without additional cleaning programs like those I used.

Steam never once started automatically until I set it to do so out of convenience...

    /facepalm.

Get with the times; it's an amazing digital distribution method that allows every game, both steam purchased and outside games, to launch through it and allows me to communicate with my friends through the steam community.

I was thinking the exact same thing, but thought "what the hell" and decided to download it anyway. It seems like the interface has improved a lot, it didn't take long at all to install and update like it used to, and I could have sworn that steam used to take up a lot more space than it does now. It was only a couple months ago the last time it was on my computer, but it seems way better now.

Just tried it, it's a very nice and polished game, a lot of fun. It reminds me of TF2 a little bit. Unfortunately my computer's graphics card is messed up and over heats at like everything =( don't know if I'll be able to get into this game or not.

Sounds like you need a computer that doesnt suck balls, and need to learn to use one aswell., theres nothing wrong with steam, ive been using it for years and never had a single one of these problems.

I've used Steam since CS 1.6 debuted on it. CCleaner finds bits of everything in the registry. Steam isn't the only thing to leaves bits around after being uninstalled in the registry. And it doesn't harm it in any way.

However, if you want it to not startup when your computer boots up, either uncheck it in the program or run "MSCONFIG" and take it off startup. Problem solved in under 20 seconds.

Anyways, it's a decent title. It's free. Granted it plays like any other attackinmasswave title, it's still polished and loads of fun.

  • I very much enjoy the teamwork aspect of this game. I'm hoping to get three of my friends into it so we can all play. I like the tech the best thus far, and so far I'm always running around hacking doors and welding/cutting barriers. I'm torn between carrying a main weapon and either extra ammo for the squad or a sentry gun. Extra ammo is always nice, but I do love me some sentry gun.

I figured out a way to cool down my grphx card so I've been playing =) The tech is a ton of fun, but I'm stuck being a healer as usual =) My name on steam is aeroangel if anyone wants to group up and kill some aliens.

Glad to hear you figured out the issue with your graphics card. I was having an issue a few months back where Source engine games would constantly overheat my card constantly. Finally got it resolved, thankfully.

I'll throw you an add on Steam later. Been wanting to kill Aliens with someone other than randoms and all my Steam friends have full games, can't connect to me, or don't want to play when I want to :(
