Rift kinda reminds me of The chonicles of spellborn in a certain way. They both have that feeling like there not super advertised and the game could go either way. Personally I dont see how rift could do much better then TCOS did. I know some people are saying, but that game is vaporware. Well theres still people playing it and it was fun when I played it, although just a trial I like it very much. What game could rift be compared to that has launched already? Im not thinking of many games that have come out sucessfull in this area of mmos.
Either way I really like this game, although I havent delved much into it. I like the idea of players are heroes that have fallen in past battles and have ascended. Thats so freakin cool! I dont know what to consider this, just fantasy or fantasy horror, by the sounds of some of the threads about it they could be construde with horror. This game looks brutal and I hope does well.

Rift is likely a mixture of EQ1, EQ2, Vanguard, DAOC and Warhammer. As thats where the develper experience comes from. Very strong ties to EQ1 and EQ2 with Hartsman. Some strong devs from vanguard. Many DAOC and Warhammer devs. The game seems to be a PvE raid orientated game in the EQ structure with some Warhammer elements like PQs and PvP. Add in the class/soul combining system which is unique to Rift.
Unlike Spellborn Trion has the money to make a quality AAA game having raised over a $100 million so far. So I am not sure its fair comparing it to a low budget game.
This is absolutely, and I mean absolutely nothing like Spellborn. While they might not be spending millions and millions upon advertising (yet) they are getting tons of coverage around various sites like this one, and the word-of-mouth has started to spread as well, causing there to be pretty significant hype for this game.
Spellborn had virtually no following. And most of the small following it had was EU, where the game had a little more life than it's later NA half. Spellborn had literally no pre-launch hype, no nothing. They had a horrible EU launch with IP blocks. The game failed for multiple reasons, and lack of advertising was only one of the contributing factors.
There really is no comparison, tho. The amount of coverage for Rift blows what Spellborn had going for it throughout the entire development cycle to shame.
Do you have an idea what the term "vaporware" actually means?
Spellborn had no mass appeal because it was designed as basically a niche title. Spellborn was built around a deck-based action combat system. Rift uses traditional targeting and skill selection system. Spellborn was designed around the system of multiple player Houses being involved in large warfare, ranging across the various shards -- this feature was never implemented. Spellborn had max group size of what, four? And no reason to group -- no real aggro system, no dedicated or even semi-dedicated healers, just a DPS zerg. Spellborn had absolutely no end-game in place, virtually nothing. Spellborn had no character advancement -- no alternate advancement skills, the gear was purely cosmetic.
Two completely different games, going after two completely difference sections of the market, ran by two completely different companies. How one could make the comparison, other than maybe getting a vibe or something from the world (which they don't bare any resemblances) is the only way I can think of.
Spellborn dared to be different. Very different. And it didn't work out. But there's nothing remotely similar.
Yes, this isn't comparable gaming has come along way, different ideologies, technologies, and mistakes. Maybe some of you guys don't think Syfy puts out good shows or perhaps cancels them for no good reason. However it's a pretty big risk for a network to invest and take time to do a collaboration with a gaming company period ( I realize WoW has a movie coming out but you only invest 2 hours in a movie but a series can last for years). I have high hopes for this company.
If I lived in Austin (only 2 hours away) I would apply for this company. Quality Assurance is what I do for a living. The only thing I don't meet experience working for a gaming company. If only I could use all the betas I have tested as experience hah
Seriously what could be better than living in Austin and helping make games great games.
I dont know but As much as I can, I read about this stuff. I dont see how the general public can take all the specifics and make anything out of them. I think what they can do is see how similar a game is to another, and throw it away very fast. I like the game, dont get me wrong, Rift looks cool and I like the theme so much. I just think that the skill tree has been over used in mmos, it just shot out wow to me, and the gameplay has been used so many times that this is unoriginal at best and when I think of these things It makes me think of what happened to TCOS. I hope RIFT does well, and im sure it will, only in a LOTRO Sence maybee or something of that nature.
