Hi, before getting started I'd like to know. Just what are we fighting in LOTRO? The orcs have been reduced to puny disorganized tribes, isengard has been retaken and mordor has been wtfpwn3d. So just what is there left to fight? All the witch kings have (presumably) also been killed.

Get some sleep. Wake up, put on a cup of coffee and try again.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
LOTRO takes place around the first movie.
The game takes place during the journey of the Fellowship. You will first see the Fellowship in Rivendell, though as you are progressing through the beginning Epic quests, you will come across some of the story of the Hobbits' journey. Until the Moria expansion, the timeline took place during the months of preparation in Rivendell, and you get to help with the scouting and stuff mentioned in the books. Hope this helps!
Evil.
Oh and doing things in real life.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
You can always ask what you want.... but this question was kinda "wtf ?!" . If you read the game website or whatever wiki or even in this same website you'll find out what you are fighting...
The game name speaks for itself. It's not Middle Earth Online, it's Lord of the Rings online, then if you know about the lore you also know what you are fighting, also know the end of it and all the facts till the end.
BUT if your real question was: Whats the point of playing if you already know the end ?
Then i can answer: Experiencing it through a well made game is as fun as reading the books and much better than the movies (imo), going through all the places and killing/helping iconic figures from the books , is an awsome experience. Also the fact that the game will last longer than the books, for me this is great too. When i Finished reading all the books i got sad that it ended, the game just adds more and more great views from Tolkien's world.
Orcs,Giant Spiders,Walking Trees,Wargs/wolves,trolls and evil humans....that's prett y much it.The I.P and the Tolkien estate didn't leave a lot of room for Turbine to be creative. But yeah you are confused about the place int he timleine this MMORPG is set.
Well, there are a bit more that that :P
Turbine has created a few of their own monster types, while at the same time trying to stick with the lore, such as some yeti-type creatures(forget the name) in the Misty Mountains, and similar ones in Evendim, just brown instead of white. Also, there are Merreveil(or however it's spelled), which are humanoid bat-creatures(very evil). You will also come across ghosts and wights, and other similar undead friends. There are even dragons! In the Enedwaith Developer Diary, they announced some weird demon-goats(not too sure I like this idea).
There are also some other basic animals, such as deer, boars, bears, shrews, etc.
So yeah, Turbine has been alot more creative than you may think, Drakynn. There are still many creature types that I haven't touched upon, for there are many areas that I haven't visited recently, and therefore, don't remember the enemies.
Yup and early next year it will start into the 2nd movie/book.
This topic brings to mind something I was considering about Lotro, namely the lack of villains. Of course we've got Sauron and the ring wraiths, but with the release of each expansion what exactly is the goal?
As people said before, it takes place during the actual events of the books & movies. You will play all the way from before the fellowship is formed, all the way through to after they're out of Moria. Right now the furthest it takes place is inside Moria and right outside into Mirkwood.
What many people who saw the movies, but did not read the books, are unaware of is that the books describe other locations and the fact that other places are having troubles too. Middle Earth does not merely consist of the core characters. For example, southern men and half-orcs are beginning to come to harass the peaceful people of Bree-land, at the behest of Saruman. Galadriel and Celborn decided to take the attack to the baddies by attacking Sauron's old fortress of Dol Guldur. There are tons of enemies to kill. There is plenty going on.
Hedonismbot: Your latest performance was as delectable as dipping my bottom over and over into a bath of the silkiest oils and creams.
Orcs, Goblins
Wolves, Wargs
Spiders, Birds (Craban)
Wights (Skeletons and bloated corpses) and Ghosts
Boars, Bears and the occasional psychotic deer (Evendim mostly)
Bandits and evil Humans (Angarim)
Snow Beasts (Yetis)
Clawbeaks and things on giant long twig legs
Trolls and Giants
Worms (ranging from worms to small 4 legged walking dragon things, to full fledged dragons)
Bird-Vampire chicks (Morrowval or something they are called).
I'm probably missing some things, but that's a fairly comprehensive list of what you fight in the game.
And as mentioned, it's not set after the books, it's set during the books. You basically follow the Fellowship around, helping behind the scenes. Only so far in the game, I think they've gotten just either at the end of the first book, or begining of second book. Long, long way to go and considering Tubrine's development staff for the game these days seems to be 2 interns on their coffee break, I have strong doubts they will be able to finish by the time the license is up (in 2017)
R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there
Dang Nevermind.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
Presumably at some point it wont continue any more.
However, if its been out this long and they've only just thinking about the second film (in terms of story line) then this game is going to be Gigantic!
When world of Warcraft runs out of storys they start stealing storys from pretty much everything out there, at least lotro is an IP that has some strict control over it. (which is why you'll never see the rediculous mounts you get in wow)
