Since when is being a "WoW-Clone" such a bad thing?

The game controls more then half the market, is easily one of the funnest mmo's IN MY OPINION, and has set the standards for what theme park MMOs should strive for.

So my question why the hell would you not want to be a WoW-clone.

P.S Yes I know WoW was not the first MMO and hell its not even the MMO I am currently playing (EQ 2).

Edit: I guess I should explain myself a little more.

I guess I should have named this, since when is building your game based of the formula's of EQ, EQ 2 and WoW been a bad thing.

"What is bad is the fact that we played more or less the same game for 13 years now. That means it is time for something new, some originality."

Thats like saying we've been playing the same FPS for the last 20 or so year. I believe soon people are going to realize that the MMO genre(Its still new) can't be innovated by much. You have your EvE like games and your have you EQ type games, take your pick.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

    Its a bad thing because:

If you like WoW, there is always WoW.

If you don't like WoW, who would want a clone?

The problem with being a clone of anything is that you're never as good as the original.  Most of the WoW players that play it will not leave for another game just so that they can do the same thing all over again while starting from the begining.  Even if the clone is pretty much the exact same thing everybody that likes that kind of game play will already be playing it, and the clone will get very little busyness unless they're offering free gameplay.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

I say we need some new labels, because classifying WoW with things like EvE and UO is kind of strange.. they basically are different game genres.

mmo-tp (theme park) and mmo-vw (virtual world) ?

    lol?

well if the game plays like wow and ur calling it a wow clone thast a GREAT THING FOR THAT GAME. Honestly a major reason why wow is doing so well is its movement / etc code it done well. Most older mmos also had good code in these areas, but it seems like they traded their coders for idiots who only know how to use "pre created engines" and not make a good movement code within them.

Wow in itself is a EQ clone. And EQ is a polished up version of Meridian 59.

What is bad is the fact that we played more or less the same game for 13 years now. That means it is time for something new, some originality.

Originality is not a bad thing and something that was fun once wont be fun forever. MMOs needs to evolve like any other genre and just steal all ideas from a older game is not the solution.

I think that one of the new thinking games will be the next big one, like GW2 (ironically since it is a sequel) or WoDO.

It is nothing wrong with copying another game but you just can't do that forever.

Well seeing how I have played off and on since beta I sure as heck look for something that is at least someway different that WoW when trying to find a new MMO. I am a little shaky on SW:TOR but its Star Wars IP so im going to play it anyway.

Most gamers are very fickle and hard to please. The ones who already like WoW will stick to WoW until it dies or pisses them off enough like it has to me. The only hard part for new MMOs that come out is that if it isnt something that is already popular such as Star Wars or already has decent MMO and great fanbois FFXIV you better be original or you are going to DIAF. The big problem is tho, there is a lot of hype to new releases and then it just never ceases to amaze me how much they just tend to Fail or Die off in a matter of a year or so.

Its hard being original and then if you or more a less a "clone" of something else it never seems to be quite as good.

TERA has caught my eye quite a bit but until I get a chance to play I wont really know how I completely feel about it. I want to try the games system very badly because it is something that is a lot different than any MMO I have played in the past.

Themeparks MMOs need to grow beyond WoW if any ever want to make a serious mark of their own.

Another angle to this is that many considered "WoW clones" don't really meet the definition.

    1. 2 factions

    2. PVE quest centric emphasis of game

    3. non-instanced overlands

    4. instanced dungeons on all levels

    5. endgame with raiding and gear progression

    6. internalized PVP mini-game, possibly with overland PVP on special servers

A ton of the games people call "WoW clones" don't have all these.

but they still may be a wow clone.

IMO WoW clone has just become a synonym for Themepark style mmo.

    Like Everquest.

Is that a bad thing? No.

only problem is, Developers release games unfinished.

Also Developers keep lingering into the Niche groups, like when they leave out the details in the list you posted

Why would we want a WoW clone? I'd prefer a genetically enhanced WoW .

This said , WoW clone has so many definitions it's really hard to tell. If it's a wow clone like literally a clone than ye it's a bad thing. If it's a wow clone like in having the same basic formula but with certain addition/tweaks than it could be interesting.

Asking why we need a WoW clone, is like asking why we need another UO clone aka Sandbox MMO.

people dont see mto have a problem of UO clones, but they have problems with EQ clones.

Like WoW =/= WoW. AoE 2 was like AoE 1 , does that make the whole creation of AoE2 pointless?

When everybody started to think that WoW was "holding back the genre as a whole blahblahblah." The mere mention of WoW around here will invoke seething hatred of some form. It should be a new internet, or at least MMORPG.com law in the likeness of Godwin's Law:

As an online video game discussion grows longer, the probability of WoW hate approaches one.

    It never fails.

There isn't a UO in it's original state and design nor a preCU SWG and yet these still remain the top 2 game designs that ppl are asking for returned or remade.

WoW Clone is not as good as WoW

Yet WoW Clone costs the same as WoW

So you pay same price for a lesser version
