From "meh" to "hmm this is looking interesting"

I am a long time Bioware fan and played nearly all of their RPGs over the years but after the early press releases I saw nothing in TOR that really created any interest, things like the alternative art direction and some other stuff put me off but recently the game is looking to be something really cool with lots of content and game play the day its released and that's refreshing after many of the current games promising things "soon" especially CCP the devs behind my current game over the last 5 years.

Being able to explore and interact with planets and space stations and fly starships in combat, seamlessly in one game looks awesome and CCPs approach to this is terrible, space combat is the core of the game but planetary interaction is an awful pointless clickfest where you look at 3D facilities in a rendered UI that wouldn't look out of place in a RTS from 10 years ago and walking in stations is going to have very little content or activities apart from women in spandex and mini games and planetary combat is just going to be a different game on a different platform altogether.

Whether the game will really live up to the hype or if Bioware will keep their promises will remain to be seen but this is one MMO I might just go and buy on the day of release.

Currently playing:

EVE online (Ruining low sec one hotdrop at a time)

Gravity Rush,
Dishonoured: The Knife of Dunwall.

(Waiting for) Metro: Last Light,
Company of Heroes II.

Sounds like you want this game to be EVE Online: The Next Generation.

No far from it I just like the idea of a fully integrated SF game with a seamless approach to both planet side and space interaction, generally I also enjoyed most of Biowares games over the years and if TOR meets my expectations being able to mix story based game play with group content appeals to me as I like a varied game where I can do different things when the mood takes me and no other MMO yet really offers that as all activities are variations of the same thing.

I wouldn't necessarily put too much hope into the space combat part of the game myself.  While I enjoy my fair share of space shooters (xwing vs tie fighter, freespace, even to a lesser extent the JTL expansion for SWG) I haven't really heard anything to make me believe that the space combat in TOR will really be all that dynamic.  Now, the announcement concerning space combat can be read many different ways and it may just be the cynic in me talking here, but it sounds more like there will be (at least at launch) nothing but mini games and turret sequences akin to what one finds in KoToR.

Of course much of the community is really hoping for a deep and robust space combat game, I wouldn't expect it, at least not at launch.

i have to agree with a poster above, i was really hoping they would have space gameplay (space gameplay is more than space combat btw) but having seen the announcement, i get the feeling that all we're getting is some kind of non-sensical mini-game.

Better than nothing I suppose, but after getting a taste of what it could be like to have full space and ground gameplay interacting in STO, i know bigger things are possible.

(to clarify:  STO is a terrible game, neither space nor ground combat are particularly spectacular, however, the interaction between the two is really cool - stuff like chasing a ship through space, disabling and boarding it and fighting aboard or landing on a planet, capturing someone and having to fight your way out past ships in orbit - very cool stuff. )

I find it ironic that people are even more skeptical about the space element of this game AFTER they announced there would indeed be space combat. I think people just need to chill out be patient....

I wasnt even expecting a space part of the game before two weeks ago so regardless of how it works I could care less as the other portions of the game is what actually got me hooked onto wanting to play.

While I agree, I understand WHY people are so sceptical.  It was the WAY they revealed space combat and their chocie of words.

They used phrases like 'alternate game experience', 'space combat hotspots' and 'evoke the emotions as the movies' space scenes.'

What this could very easily be interpreted as is: Space content could be totally skipped and it's just there for people who want to do it.  Space content is pretty much a 'click here, join space content instance/zone' type of deal.  Space content is likely on rails rather than 'open space', leading players through a mission -- think along the lines of StarFox...

Now I'm not saying that's what it will be - I'm just saying it could easily be interpreted as that which to most people who want space content, doesn't sound very great.

Personally, I'd be happy with something like that as long as they really BUILD on it in the future and flesh it out more.  For day 1, that's all good by me.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Link to where they have given any details other than that they will have space combat? Sounds like you're pulling shit out of your ass.

as the poster before you said, "the announcement concerning space combat can be read many different ways". So who are you to tell him he's wrong or to act as if he can't have his own opinion?   *shakes head in disgust*
