Maybe mmos can learn from games like these. Fastest selling rts ever! I can only imagine how many copies they will sell by the end of the year.
Wings of Liberty takes off as Blizzard's real-time strategy game lays claim to title of "fastest-selling strategy game of all time."
Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is orchestrating a full-scale Zerg rush on gamers. Blizzard Entertainment today announced that its sci-fi real-time strategy game sold more than 1 million copies worldwide through its launch day, and 1.5 million within 48 hours of going on sale.
Blizzard proclaimed Starcraft II the fastest-selling strategy game of all time, as well as the best-selling PC game of 2010. In the company's announcement, an executive from GameStop went on the record calling Starcraft II the specialty retailer's "fastest-selling PC game since Blizzard launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King."
The second expansion to the hugely successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Wrath of the Lich King launched in November of 2008 and sold 2.8 million copies on day one. The game's first expansion was also an instant hit for Blizzard, selling 2.4 million copies on its January 2007 launch day. Not even those blockbusters could hold a candle to Blizzard parent company Activision's biggest hit, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which launched last November on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, selling 4.7 million on its first day of sale and laying claim to the title of "largest entertainment launch ever."
Obviously, Starcraft II's debut is only the beginning of its sales story. Analysts have big expectations for Blizzard's latest, with estimates for the game's 2010 sales total reaching as high as 6.5 million copies.
As the first new stand-alone game from Blizzard since 2004's World of Warcraft, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty focuses primarily on the human Terran faction with a 29-mission single-player campaign. However, the multiplayer component also lets gamers wage interstellar real-time strategy warfare as the hivelike Zerg and the technologically advanced Protoss factions. Two sequels focusing on those factions--Legacy of the Void and Heart of the Swarm--are also in development.

Glad to say I am not one of them and never will be! Die RTS games! Go play a real RTS like tabletop games or join the military >.<
Isn't this MMORPG.com? not RTS.com?
this reads like an advertisement in PCgamer.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.
I guess you didn't even bother to look at what section of the forums you are in ? Good job!
Umm... okay. I personally enjoy RTS games thank you very much!
And I don't like tabletop games and have no desire to get my legs blown off in Afghanistan... so I think I'll stick with video game variety.
So whats new? Lot of customers are suckers for hype. Especially a large part of the young customers. You can safely assume that the initial sales are based for a large part on the legacy of Starcraft I.
How good Starcraft II really is something we will learn in some time.
Nice read, thanks for the info Viktor. I refuse to spend $60 bucks on 1/3rd of the missions, so I'm happily waiting for a battlechest, or a nice sale :P
Well....I got lucky enough to get a beta invite. The game has excellent options for multiplayer, and they were making many balancing adjustments based upon player feedback and statistics tracking.
I can't really speak for the single player campaign though. Although many of my friends (who were also diehard SC1 fans) have given a lot of positive feedback.
Still though, a $60 pricepoint is something I refuse to pay. The price of games is getting out of hand, and I am personally drawing a line.
/off topic whining.
How long until every new pc game has planned multiple expansions before the game has been released? How long until every pc game costs 60euros? They could just stick with 49,99 imo.. No way I'm going pay 60euros for a game no matter how good it looks.
Starcraft II looks pretty good game and I'm not big fan of RTS's but I think 60euros is too much even at launch. Just bought Red Alert 3 special edition for 5euros and I'm enjoying it alot. Sure the game isn't probably as good as Starcraft II but it costed more than 10 times less and provides longer or at least almost as long single player campaign as Starcraft II.
I don't like where PC gaming is going
Anyways, good for Blizzard and who knows if I'll buy it someday when it gets cheaper.
Ah the old 1/3 of a game .... blah blah, 29 mission 1/3 of game? so you expect 87 missions?
I hope none of you bought DoW2 cus that only had 1race in single player ... or went and saw the first LOTR movie, or bought EQ1 ... hell bought any gamemovies whoes expansions continued the story.
Funny thing they would have been just a mad if blizz released the game with 10 missions per race with 2 xpac doing the same.
I am amazed. Never saw this kind of gamepley and story telling in a RTS. After 5 days playing I would give it a 12/10.
People that say SC2 is the same as SC1 obviously never installed it. For once : ... Play before understanding.
I also understand much more now why the MMO scene was dominated by a Blizzard product.
This compnay is in a league of its own. High hopes for D3 after seeing this.
Sigh ... What a pathetic and mediocre game industry....
agreed i was one of those " the same game is not worth 65 bucks" but man Have I enjoyed my self...the single player is top notch rivals the first one and the story telling is as good if not better.
multiplayer..moving to match making was an awesome choice as custom maps are always ready to be found and playing 2s and 3 is just a blast...3s team sucks though 2s we aint too bad but again we are all MMO players who are still trying to get back into RTSs again
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Hurr hurr if you like fantasy games why don't you just become an elf?
Omfg.
LOL
For the ones who bought the game... Is it worth it? Im kinda skeptical cuz the lan feature was removed. Im still 50/50 on buying this.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Yep. Good, replayable storyline in campaign. Fast action multiplayer for "pvp" enthusiasts. Game is truely remarkable.
Haven't played multiplayer yet but so far I am having a great time with the campaign, it's a whole new level for the RTS genre.
SC2 is an amazing game. Love it! Finished the campaign and it was way better than I expected. Like playing an interactive movie! Worth the wait. Now just need to get the other faction campaigns released!
