This is by far one of the most annoying features in this game for me. And I'm not just talking about the lame cheesy remarks that your character makes during combat. I'm also referring to the audible voice-overs for your character's speech during story sequences. There HAS to be an option to turn it off, because I personally don't want to hear it.
Every player likes to imagine how his/her particular character sounds when they talk, and this is always going to be in accordance with the type of character they are trying to develop and play as in the game. If a game is allowing me to create a specific type of a character, instead of giving me a pre-made character (like Hawke in DA2, who appears to be a total badass covered in awesomesauce), then they should also at least omit these silly little chosen voice-overs for my character, because they will never fit what I am imagining. This can be very annoying for players like me, but I'm sure it would really annoy the role playing community, as I'm sure they understand where I"m coming from. And I passionately love our RP community, so I'd hate to lose them to another game.
Having said all of this, there is no way that this one feature will keep me from playing the game. If there is no option to turn it off, I will just have to suck it up and try to ignore it. I'll still be a fan of Arenanet (continues folding his GW2 underwear).
Any thoughts, friends?

<Smiles> thats just silly you want them to cut a main feauture... All i can think of is that there could be a setting to turn their ingenious system of in combat voice overs off..
But turning voice overs of in Story sequences will probably be a no go.... That would be like ruining one of the best parts of their own game.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Hm. Well I guess I may have to turn off my speakers during those moments. I really don't think that the voiceovers are ingenious. What would really be ingenious is the ability to choose your voice, like you can in other games, like dragon age and neverwinter nights. Now that would be brilliant, but would require 10 times as much in voiceovers. So I know that aint happenin...
We'll have to see....maybe I can learn to like it....dunno...

omg yes! that was so annoying in the first game. i had my characters voice pictured in my head, and then it was completely different when he spoke. being able to turn it off would be a great feature.
I just hope their is different voices for different races and professions. Very disappoonting in original game to have all my characters have the same voice, no matter which campaign the came from and what profession they were. At the very least a Canthan should have sounded different than a Tyrian or Elonan.
They said the "snappy one-liners" during combat won't be overused so it won't be annoying.
??? So what was that we saw in the profession skill trailers on the main site?

Hi, Im commander Shepard and this is my favourite shop in the citadel...Look at the bright side sometimes having VO for your hero makes it so much cooler!:))
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
...Really? I loved the one liners...Makes my character feel a little more...robust.
They did not say that there wouldn't be any - they said it would happen less often than those skill trailers lead us to believe. They said they would find it annoying too if they were constantly going - so I'd imagine there will be an option to disable them.
Also some games you can control the volume for different parts of the game, like music, combat ect..... so maybe you will luck out and there will be aqn option for the VO.
While I totally understand what you are saying, I honestly don't think you understand what I'm saying, dear friend. Think about it this way, if we were playing specific pre-made characters, that would be understood. For example, did it not annoy people, how in elder scrolls morrowind or oblivion, there was only one voice for each gender of each race? That really annoyed players. But having character VO works fine for games like Dragon Age 2, the Mass Effect series, Red Dead Redemption (John Marston is one of the most memorable characters in gaming history!), and etc. I perfectly understand them using VO for this, because its called for in games like these. I am well aware of the benefit of using VO in games. I just think that it should be conditional based upon the type of game you are making.
However, for games in which players are creating their character from the ground up, like in Guild Wars 2, extensive VO can really dampen your plans to construct the character of your imagination. Trust me, I"m not the only person who feels this way. The only way for this to work is to have at least 15+ options for your character's voice. But like I said, this would be a huge undertaking for Arenanet, because you'd have to have that same amount for each gender of each race. I'm not sure if Arenanet could handle that much VO. So, because of this, I usually advocate not having personal character VO for these types of games.

"We’re also aware that there can be too much of a good thing, which is why we’ve developed a sound throttling system so you won’t hear the same combat chatter repeated over and over again during fights. Those concerned about the game being diluted with “snappy one-liners” can breathe a sigh of relief. You won’t hear quips every five seconds, and most of them aren’t smarmy in nature. That annoys us just as much as it does you."

I'm fully aware of that post. It simply means that you won't hear the little "one-liners" as often as we've been hearing in the skill videos. I just don't think that it matched what you said in your post, thats all.

I edited my post, I made a mistake
First of all, A-Net has pointed out that they have "60 feature-length films of voice acting in the game". I don't think quantity is the problem here. Second of all, you don't KNOW for sure that choosing your voice when you create your character.
So, first off, know your facts, and second off, don't comment on un-revealed features like the character creation process, which has not been revealed in depth.
Not sure what side of the bed you woke up on today, but why don't you start by toning down your rudeness there, Bro.
Look, I am fully aware of the ""60 feature-length films of voice acting in the game" that A-Net has mentioned many times in their blogs and at Gamescom. The very fact that they are devoting so much time, resources, and money into that much VO suggests that taking on what I am suggesting would require MUCH more time, resources, and money than they've already given. This would be a huge undertaking in ADDITION TO WHAT THEY HAVE ALREADY DONE WITH VO. Yes friend, quantity would be a problem there.
Second, I'm not 100% clear on your sentence, "Second of all, you don't KNOW for sure that choosing your voice when you create your character". I'm guessing you meant to say, "Second of all, you don't KNOW for sure whether you have the option to choose your voice when you create your character". If thats what you meant, then please note that I never stated that I know for sure whether you have that option. I stated what I would like the game to have, but assumed that it would be too big of an untertaking to pull off right now, due to the other things that they are working on. I can only state what I hope is in the final product. If it turns out that they can pull it off, then we all win. Until then, I can talk about what I think is possible as much as I want.
If you have a problem with me making assumptions and giving my opinion based upon my own personal preferences, then you might want to leave the internet, because we're everywhere. We're going to keep commenting on whatever the heck we choose, Bro, so get used to it.
Now with that out of the way, do you have something to actually discuss?

hit escape? or just grab a drink while the scene runs? at least it's not like SWTOR lol
Is it that bad in SWTOR? I've barely given that game a glance or two.

I dont mind them so much as long as the voices arent terribly hard to listen to. In EQ2 for example they used the voice over for certain folks that was the voice used in Invader Zim. I laugh everytime I hear it.
money is on they will have an option to turn off all voice. an option for subtitles when needed all that. your panicing for somthing youll find in your option menu.
swtor will have its voice acting but you can skip it all together. and well money is on they will have the option to add subtitles to it also. you know so those who are hearing impared can enjoy the game.
Actually, I disagree and think the voice acting will be nice. That said, I respect and also agree with what you said about an option to turn it off.
Normally, I'm against voice acting, as more often than not it's done very badly. Most games I have, I either turn the voices off or go looking for the japanese voice packs. However, the first Guild Wars did voice acting right, I think. Overall, it didn't come off as campy, and the voices fit the characters fairly well. Lots of easy-to-listen-to tones, and lines delivered well.
But just like a really good cinematic, I would grow tired of hearing it over and over. With Guild Wars 2, not only do we have dialogue, but we have those witty one-liners during battle that occur randomly. However funny at first, eventually I'm going to want my character to stfu.
In short, I support the idea of an option to turn the voice acting off.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
I'm not panicking. Just voicing my own concerns and desires.
Either way, as I already said, I hope there's an option to turn it off.

there has to be one the first run would be nice to hear and all. but if you decide to make another char and not given an option to turn them off that would suck. wonder if this is somthing that can be brought up when the game goes to close beta. there better be subtitles as an option for swtor because ill be pissed if there isnt. i can bearly hear things as it is right now.
Without getting into the detail, I support this. I'm pretty much against anything that detracts from me creating my char. Be it PC voice-overs or mandatory backstories.
There is a difference between online gaming and mmorpg's. I know that the definition has been greatly watered down over time, but to me an MMORPG is still an opportunity to create a char in a world.
