FFXIV: The Sky Is Falling

It put it simply, if you liked FF11 you will like FF14.

The aesthetic is the same, just rendered with contemporary technology that takes advantage of modern PC hardware and the PS3.  Overall, its quite stunning.

The controls are exactly the same - though there is a "laggy" feeling as many people have complained of.  Is it a game breaker? Not really, you do get used to it, especially if you are used to FF11s controls.  They are awkward but once you get used to them, they do work well.  I do hope the "lag" is fixed.

I'm running with a 2yr old quad-core processor, 2yr old high-end 3D card, and 4 gigs of ran and the game runs buttery smooth.  It only gets choppy in crowded areas.  If you are experiencing poor performance, please take a look at your settings (the game has an external settings app for configuring the client).

Combat isn't nearly as slow paced as FF11 but its not as fast as WoW or LotRO.  There is an awkwardness to it - either because it truly is awkward or I just haven't figured it out yet.  I've noticed many complain about not being able to recover hp/mana after combat.  All you need to do is sheath your weapon via "F" key and you will regen quite fast.

There is a lot more to it, but if you were hoping to find a more casual-friendly FF11, then this may be it.  It is by no-means WoW-casual, but there is plenty to do if you can only login for an hour or 2 at a time.

People arent going to adjust to this game, either you like it or you dont, and some people made up their minds at hte sound of using a controller. Even though the devs have said they are going to fix the  mouse support, and the only reason it wasnt in at launch was because most final fantasy fans use a controller, the game is fantasitcally designed around a controller, it still not worth it to them to even bother apperently.

It is their loss, i dont id rather not waste any more time trying to convince people they should try this game, i just cant wait for 2 weeks after launch so people can stop infesting the forums. Like every new game on this forum, people just spend their time saying why you shouldnt play the game, and on EVERY sub forum its always the hate that outweighs the good.

Why? Because the people who enjoy the game, are to busy playing it to troll the forums.

Actually they have all out stated they aren't going to fix the mouse issues.  At least not by launch, or shortly after.  What improvements they did make were between beta 2 and 3, which was the time when they were stating they'd be improving it.

They made a lot of improvements elsewhere, but people are so tunnelvisioned on the mouse lag to see that. They most likely feel the controller is so superior and so adequate that it is hardly nessesary to move the mouse issues higher up the priority list.

I absolutely hated FFXI. I really didn't enjoy it. The graphics took so much effort to tweak and work in any realistic way. They UI was absolutely terrible and a pain in the tush to use and the combat was mind-numbingly slow.

Thats my opinion on FFXI. I played it from launch, for quite a few months and came back to the game several times in the hopes that I could just deal with it and get used to it. Unfortunately, I never did.

As far as FFXIV goes, I've been in the beta since Sept. 02. I played for about two hours and I'm already glad that I bought the Collectors Edition. To me, CE will be worth it.

1.) First off, the graphics are beautifully done. They managed to make everything look crisp, clean and polished. I think its outstanding compared to most MMO's out there currently. They just blow me away. My fiance (who hasn't done beta) came up behind me and asked if it was a cut scene while I was wandering around. After I told him no, he was completely blown away.

2.)  The combat in FFXIV is already rather quick compared to FFXI. It's not super fast, its not super slow, its just right there in the middle. It's "comfortable". You watch the bar, you attack. You attack before the bar turns green and it won't be as powerful. The more you move, the higher your chance seems to be for a critical.

3.) I'm not a console user really. I haven't been since 2002 and since they've pretty much done away with Spyro I've really not touched a console very often. That being said, I think the controller really goes a hell of a long way to making FFXIV more enjoyable in the long run. It's much easier to click things at a fast pace then it is with the way they have the keyboard set up. The keyboard just drives me bonkers and the fact that you can barely remap anything does not help it. If you're going to play FFXIV, do yourself a favor and get over your hatred or fear of the controller, because its going to be your best friend.

4.) I have faith that they will fix this lag. I'm sure they see it, they have to be working on it. It's driving people nuts.

5.) Give the game a chance. It's brand new and it's going to take some tweaking. They ALL take tweaking after launch. It just needs a bit more time to become what you want it to be. If after those few months after launch, you're not seeing the changes you want, then find a new game. No one is making you play. Why spend money on that which you don't enjoy?

The only problem I have right now, and its not even necessarily the games fault is that there is no way to turn on VSync or Triple Buffering. I just got a new PC with a new ATI Radeon HD 5870 and no matter what I change in the Catalyst Control Center for Vsync and Triple Buffering, it changes nothing in game - so of course I'm getting screen tearing which is driving me absolutely nuts. If anyone has any advice on that, I'd be really happy to hear it.

So thats my 5 cents. Just my opinion, folks! :)

Thats my only issue with the game right there, though it isn't quite as noticable when I get away from the city/crowded areas.

Hopefully it'll be fixed in the near future, otherwise enjoying the game for the most part.

I don't understand what problems people are having with running this game.  My PC is garbage.  In fact, with the FFXIV benchmark I scored a whopping 950.  I shouldn't even be able to play the game.  But after changing some settings it runs better than FFXI did on this same PC.

Only thing I have a problem with is staying logged in!

I crashed hard one time, other than that I just lose connection every 10-15 mins.
