I just think OP is Internet trolling myself. XIV is perfectly playable as near as I can tell at OB. the issues that get put up are a little nonsensical, for example mouse is fine for most with a reasonable system, and given the numbers of people who game with an iPhone these days surely not a huge issue. similarly with game play, if you like games that put question marks above all relevant npcs to guide you that's fine too. but, just to come out and say the game is trash is nasty as while not to your tastes, it may be to others.
If the mouse is so great then why are so many people complaining about it? Every other game uses a hardware mouse for mouse controls. If SE wants to make a PC/console game, then fine, but they should at least bother to get the controls right.
My guess would be low end mice. I haven't had problems with my mouse, it has adjustable movement speed/sensitivity.

Uhm... what?!
Are you seriously trying to suggest that FFXIV is designed to be played on an iPhone? Yes, the game is 'playable', but no it's not streamlined. No, the game is not designed to be played on the iPhone, it's supposed to be for keyboard & console gamers equally. Atm, I would argue that it's more heavily skewed towards a controller, than a keyboard. The keyboard & mouse can work, but you have limited customization atm w/ both, and the controls are clearly engineered to work optimally on the controller. If you use a controller, then this is great (and I do use one for this game), but if you want to play w/ a mouse / have trouble getting your controller to work properly, it can be a pretty big hastle.
I wouldn't say its terrible, I would just say it is not a game that was designed for typecasted "mmo gamers" in mind. I guess I just had really high hopes that this would be a traditional mmo, as there hasn't been one in a long time.
Warhammer I suppose was the last ? Citation ?
God forbid developers try something different. Terrible design choice. The last 1000 WoW clones that came out on the market are flourishing. /sarcasm off
1000 Wow clones?!
Name 3....
Normally when someone pulls out the old "WoW clone" straw man, they basically mean that if you need to login, it's clone of WoW. The actual mechanics and appearance are secondary considerations.
Judging from the OP's points, it sounds as if the game has built into it a lot of arbitrary time sinks. Gameplay features that are needlessly complicated or time-consuming, are often that way for the sole purpose of consuming time. I hope for everyone that intends to play it, that these issues turn out to be bugs or overlooked design flaws, and that once reported, will be rectified. But they certainly don't sound like bugs to me, so someone's dropped the ball in development. The question is, will anyone be picking it up again?
I can't agree with everything the OP has to say here, most of his list can be dismissed with one statement 'this is NOT a gear based game'. Simple as that. Some of the other issues however, the lack of mobs to kill...well standing at the aether last night at 4am with 67 other people...and then walking through the cavernous passages in the forest seeing every mob spawn point with 4-8 more people waiting for the one squirrel to pop...yeah I dont think more needs to be said on that one either.
The fact mobs of different strangth being side by side, well I dont think dod birds actually eat moles so it is possible the coexist in the same region, maybe some real life common sense should be applied instead of creating a world so it doesn't piss off Johnny. Just saying.
The Mouse, can be an issue if you dont set your graphics correctly, it DOES take time to tweak it properly, and that is annoying since its only outside the game client. I'm personally hoping that will change with the live client. Same with the keyboard mapping. I really would love to move my turn right and turn left from Q and E to my right and left arrow keys, usually a very simply option which doesn't appear to be simple here, but then again that might be in the live client.
The whole gear thing, I did 8 levequests, got 4 nice pieces of armor. Gained 8 levels, got some nice new skills. Placed my stats correctly and got some nice bonuses to my killing ability. The crafting, well..I like it so far except...not a clue in game what materials I found are for what crafting skill. And even then, where does it tell you 2 copper +1 tin works on main hand synthesis and 4 copper +4 tin does not, and why? This part is a bit annoying. I would really love to pull up my recipes first and see what I need BEFORE I enter synthesis mode.
The most annoying for me is the crash bug for clicking off a full screen mode game client. I run 3 monitors, but this in its current form, with the crash bug makes 2 of them useless. I would love to be able to answer my crafting questions on the web while I'm ion game figuring it out, but unfortunately....... Oh yeah and they really need to do somethign with thier 'fail' on the timed quests if you get forcebly disco'ed on a bug like this. It sucks big time just starting your 30 minute timer, game crash, and back in after only 2 minutes to have it declare you already failed LONG before you started walking there.
Other than that, I find this game great. No more resource node campers, no more rush to the 'end game' players, no more gear whores, I even like the idea of no kill stealers - you tag it its all yours buddy, enjoy, and NO I'm not helping you kill it so you can have its drops and xp for free! All in all though I like it so far, some bugs to be fixed sure, but its a refreshing change from the forced grind 99% of the MMOs out there currently are.

I had always planned on playing this game with a controller. I prefer console controls to mouse and keyboard whenever possible since I prefer to lay in bed to play games, but I have friends that would much rather be able to use mouse and keyboard because it is what they are more comfortable with. A PC game should not *require* a special controller to function properly. Even flight sims don't require the use of a joystick to work correctly.
It has nothing to do with having disposable income. I don't even understand why you mentioned that. It's not relevant to the point that the game should be able to function properly for a computer game. At this point in the time the PC controls are lackluster at best.

Actually, when you get older, and after 25+ years of working at a computer, there is this thing called Arthritis that happens to some of us, especially in the hands which makes using a controller far less than desirable. Sure I can go buy one anytime I want, but why would I when using it would force me to less than 4 hours of play time per setting when I can use a keyboard alone and do 16 if I want.

Thats unfortunate that arthritis will prevent you from playing ff 14.
Wow OP got a lot further than I did before I knew this was going to be a pass. Myself I got annoyed and saw nothing to write home about before even leaving the tutorial.
No turn key by default bad.
Really bad, like EQ2 raid bad, performance in the tutorial on a rig that is 1 level down from the very best AMD offers.
Combat was either really really slow or unintuitive because I wasn't sure when I was and wasn't active.
Mouse control is just game breaking.
Think its about that time that I logged. I've dropped the settings down to minimum, well what passes for settings, and might try again but since I wasn't digging it on paper or through promo videos... not expecting to get turned around. At least Aion had a hype train to convince me to try a little more, FF XIV seems dead on arrival.
Thats unfortunate that arthritis will prevent you from playing ff 14.
Actually it hasn't and it wont, because besides what some like to tell people, you can actually play this game with the keyboard almost exclusively. I only use the mouse for a very few things I havent found a shortcut key for yet. But I'm sure even those I will find a way around.

Game seems pretty cool just hope they work out the technical stuff. I will be watching forums to see if it happens and if it does ill probably get the game cause it runs silky smooth and looks great When it runs
I appreciate your well thought out post Omasu. You actually listed good reasons why you don't like the game. Despite that though, those things seemed really attractive to me, a person who really disliked wow and its game mechanics. If more designers would do what SE did, we would start seeing some diverity in the genre and that is a good thing. I like how they make the economy player based right from the start. That is something we haven't seen for awhile.
I understand your disappointment though. Its really hard to find something that suits what you like when mmos seem to try to encompass the entire playerbases' wants. This leads inevitably to disappoint those people who like something specific.
Thanks for the post though. Its rare that I can read someone's dislikes about a game and finish more excited than I was before. That speaks to your honestly and even tone.
Bah well until release I still cannot make a statement about FFXIV, all I can say is that I love the Final Fantasy Series, but what I do not like, and the only one or two things, is FFXIV should not have EXP limits, play time limits on how much you can earn, except some servers, and The controls could be a lot better, such as allowing people to ALT +TAB out of the game if they want to, or customize it to work fully with their keyboard/mouse, and number keys, or use a game pad. I have both so it really doesnt bother me, but I would like keyboard configurations like Resident Evil 5 allows.

Has anyone in OB actually hit a surplus yet? I played almost 16 hours yesterday (first day in OB) and didnt hit surplus at all, going from lvl 1 to lvl 11 on gladiator. Just curious if all the fear is actually a real thing on this.

I've been stuck download a 6 minute patch for going on 40 minutes now, stuck on the last 20seconds for most of that time, 94.8%.... forever. hmmm.
Anyway, nice post OP. I can't disagree with most of your comments. I played some last night, trying to play today. I am hearling a lot of unfortunate remarks that can be easily described as some sort of weirdo WoW hate. I've never played WoW, but I can tell you I've played a fair amount of MMO games. Unless it's an instance, being able to do more than one quest at a time is common and well liked by those of us who don't have WoW syndrome because we've never played WoW. I played MMOs before WoW's release, so you WoW haters can take your insults elsewhere too unless you've gotten to the point where you're claiming games before WoW somehow time jumped into having the ability to clone WoW.
The map system is awful. The mouse works okay and isn't the issue some claimed. The real problem is the games refuses to make using the mouse and KB handy, and you spend way too much time clicking through slow as dripping sap menus to get even the most basic things done like opening your inventory. I played MMOs when there are not tutorials to be had, but this is 2010 not 1999. Their is hand-holding and then whatever the hell this is, it's even got a very, very poor attempt at telling you what do do and even that is awful.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
For someone who has never played you still managed to write WoW eight times in one post in a thread on a forum dedicated to Final Fantasy XIV...congrats on you achievement

A lot of people are having that issue. There are alternate sources for the patch, though. I don't want to be posting links and stuff here but they're not too hard to find.
Well i have not played the beta, and really don't want to all this talk from haters, fans and people that did want to like it are getting silly..
will just wait and take the chance and by one copy for i love ff and want to play it. but people a ui that works well is a must and not oh it is different you just a wow boy. no eq and eq2 and most others have well made ui . that is like if they had a problem with , lets say a random bug in either your right leg or left leg that made you limp to that direction , and they had no way of fixing it before launch would the fans just say " o your a wow boy used to running stright to the mob, this is different nothing wrong with that" yes there is , fix the ui and stop making silly reason why it is so bad.. but like i said will still try and hope they fix it..
p.s. lets be nice , most really wanted it to work, and maybe it will when the find out what went wrong.
they should get rid of player own vendor. anyone here played lineage 2. just go to the main city. and you see hundreds of afkrs.. sitting next to each other with theire own sign. imagine the lag, the frustration, the scammers placing junk items for expensive amount of gill, that you have to sift trough just to get the one thing u need to make a steak.
I agree with everything you said, I also want to add that even the patcher is as buggy as the game, I mean a laggy mouse while patching the game, come on, thats just ridiculous, and don't even get me started on the patchers port issues. I had to use my torrent program to download the updates then paste them into the patcher directory because the patcher isn't capable of doing what it's designed for.
I played and loved FFXI and it had it's issues but I still loved it. I was hopping that they were gonna fix those issues in FFXIV but it looks like just like they made more, I mean is some streamlining for PC gamers too much to ask for.
On another note, is anyone else getting that "render bubble" effect where shurbs and bushes are loading in a bubble around you as you walk and sometimes you can see them loading in the distance. Really annoying. Another thing this game desperately needs, optimization, I have a Quad Core Core i7 at 2.8 GHz, 4 Gigs of RAM at 1600 MHz, and a GTX 470, I should not be having the issues I am having.
I had really high hopes for this game but it looks like the game won't be what I hopped it was going to be, as you can tell by the hype meter, it's out of the top five.
Wow... the more complaining I hear about FFXIV, the more crazy i get about it. WHY COULDN'T I GET ONE FREAKING KEY?!?
I love how it isn't player friendly, it's trying to be very immersive, with less focus in freaking quests (I HATE QUESTS!!!) and more in the social/craft aspect of the game. I just hope they fix the mouse lag though.
With the latest open beta patch I don't get anymore mouse lag! I'm not sure if it is that way for everyone though.

Just a question here since I have heard so many with this comment. Have you, or anyone else for that matter seen anything in FFXIV yet that would make a valid comparison to the merchant system in L2? Not what you think may happen, or how you think the system may work, but actually seen it working in the game itself? Does it in fact lag the zone down lke the cities in L2? Or is this comment, and so many like it just rumor and misinformation?

I only played closed beta - but the comment was misleading. In FFXIV, the NPC vendors can only be summoned in certain areas, specifically the instanced market districts. They can't be put up anywhere like bear is implying. Technically you can have a personal bazaar that operates directly from your player character as well (not the NPC), and you could just leave that on and sit somewhere if you wanted. However, it seems unlikely that will be a popular method since there will likely be an auto log-out function if you're idle for too long.

Yes, anytime someone has an opinion that is different than your own, it must be trolling. Welcome to teh interwebs. I apologize if our opinions cannot co-exist peacefully.
First off ... the game is playable. I never said that it wasn't, please check your optical prescription. It is extremely playable. In fact, out of the 8 or 9 betas that I have played, it by far has the least amount of bugs and the most polish. I did say however, it was not enjoyable for me personally (for the above listed reasons).
Secondly, who said anything about a mouse ? Not me.
Who said the game was trashy ? Not me. I said that there were several things that were annoying. It is a very well made game. Very well made. So is a cruise ship, but I wouldn't want to drive it for a good time. Some people might. Good analogy I would say of my current opinion.

I mentioned disoposable income because it was the only reseaonable explanation I could come up with as to why one would have an issue with using one.
Unless they have controller phobia.

With the latest open beta patch I don't get anymore mouse lag! I'm not sure if it is that way for everyone though.
it makes me laugh how people refer to every mmo after WoW, a WoW clone. WoW copied aspects from mmo's before it. It is no way unique.

From Illyssia:
"I just think OP is Internet trolling myself. XIV is perfectly playable as near as I can tell at OB. the issues that get put up are a little nonsensical, for example mouse is fine for most with a reasonable system, and given the numbers of people who game with an iPhone these days surely not a huge issue. similarly with game play, if you like games that put question marks above all relevant npcs to guide you that's fine too. but, just to come out and say the game is trash is nasty as while not to your tastes, it may be to others."
