Final Fantasy XIV's hype plunges at mmorpg.com

OzivoisOzivois Member UncommonPosts: 598

Everyone notice how FF XIV's score here has dramatically dropped since OB? It is disappointing that this game didn't turn out to be what many of us hoped it would be.

Now I need to know, what is the next MMORPG in development to start following and get excited about?

None.  They all end up being the same in the end.  It is one big cycle of players getting hyped up about games that developers can't deliver on.

oh noes the game isnt going to be the most popular game in the world and i wont be part of the biggest gaming crowd, time to go follow another game fantaicly until I realize it wont live up to hype either!!!

no game keeps its hype, theres a huge crowd of people called game hoppers that cause these up and downs, and you sir, are one of them. And you will never find a game.

I just happen to be a dedicated MMO player and have several MMOs that I played continously for years.  In nearly all of those cases those games were extremely fun and engaging from day one.  Not this one, though. Very disappointing to say the least.

I think  more people hop because a game is crud rather than anything to do with hype. Some people even have <gasp> realistic expectations and when these are not met they hop.

Well, this is from a lot of different factors including but not limited to:

    • People from FFXI believing that it was just going to be a reskinned version of FFXI and being disappointed that it's not.

    • Many people with computers that run good on WoW or similar games are baffled and annoyed that their computers can't run FFXIV very well.

    • Other people are annoyed about not having a billion quests to grind and multiple nearby quest hubs. (They make it sound like quest grinding is so much different from mob grinding.  Half the time the people don't even read the quests anyway, they just click accept and go kill!)

Basically anyone who doesn't see exactly what they want in a game will lower the hype of the game.   I'm sure a lot of the people who preordered it (without even knowing what the game was like, or only played 1 of the beta tests) and then cancelled probably came back here spouting negative feedback and giving the game an extremely low hype.

your judging a game in beta, so im jugding you for your post.

    Bullshit, Udinthrik.

While there is almost always a segment of the population that is somewhat disappointed, if you were around for WoW's open beta and stress test phases, you'd know this is not always the reaction.  WoW's hype went through the roof during open beta and the stress tests and the feedback on this site was almost exclusively good.

The difference, is that WoW was a good, well-made game.  No, I'm not a WoW fanboi, and no I haven't played in years.  BUT, at the time it was a great game and absolutely blew the competition (FFXI, anyone?) out of the water.  FFXIV would have been a good MMO 5 years ago.  Today, it's another mediocre game that will attract a niche audience and be little more than a blip on the MMORPG radar screen.

Let me see, how have the threads by the masses gone....

"Man I can't wait until Vanguard comes out!!!"    -then-  "Man Vanguard sucks, I cant wait till AoC comes out, it will change MMO's forever!!!"

    -then-

"Man AoC sucks, I cant wait till WAR comes out, thats the WoW killer forsure!!!"

    -then-

"I HATE WAR, I cant wait for Aion to come out!!"

    -then-

"Man Aion is just another asian grinder (what ever that actually means) I cant wait for FFXIV"

    -now-

"FFXIV sucks!!! I cant wait till SWTOR comes out"

    -then-

....... well, we dont need a prophet to guess what will be said on these forums when SWTOR comes out, and then the next one and the next one....

Anyways, I am actually having a good time with FFXIV, the game looks amazing, and the gameplay is very very different than anything I have played before so its been alot of fun for me.

Quests are shallow, you collect them from one guy, and hand them over to a big giant crystal, how entertaining.

If quest where given by NPC's in town of difrent needs I might care doing them, like a fisherman in need of wood for his boat or something.

Now its just one dude on a counter, collect some grind quest repeat add nausium.

    It fucking blows.

That was a true story for anyone who doesn't know. A+ Sir. I'm not surprised that the "hype meter" on this site took a plunge. Look at all the negative posts in these forums and that'll tell you people were expecting something other than what they experienced. I for one enjoyed the beta, but I will say it again, this game needs more time to develop. That is all. It'll be a hit despite what the hype-meter tells you.

Despite the criticisms about Vanguard and AoC when they came out both of them had incredibly satisfying PvE play throughout the player's advancement and it was really their endgame or pvp imbalance issues that hurt their population.  FF XIV, however, seems lacking from level one.  I think that's the cause of the immediate plunge.  And this game is not in beta form as we all know that this experience is 99% of what we will see our first 10-20 levels at launch.

your post makes me think you are the one who was not in the wow betas.

the hype went through the roof after wow beta because millions of people couldnt play the game in beta because of login ques.... they had like 1/8 of their servers open in beta for stress testing.

    I agree completely.

AoC and WAR were both vastly superior to Final Fantasy XIV.

the cause of the immediate plunge is obviously due to the keyboar/mouse issues and people not willing to use a controller.

I admit If i didnt have a gamepad to play with, I would have quit after those first 20 minutes of fumbling with my keyboard and mouse. Luckily I decided to try it with a gamepad before I quit. The game was in no doubt made for a gamepad.

Yup, that's also what people said about AoC vs WAR, WAR is vastly superior, etc. The newer one is always worse than the older ones.

    It has become a routine.

(and no, I don't agree with this "one game is superior to another" hierarchy  - all are good games IMO there is too much subjectivity to be objective, I just seek different things in a MMO, we all do)

i dont think you will. people are quitting just because they dont think they should have to use a gamepad for a PC game...... well, racing games on the PC are made to be used with racing wheels, and if you dont use them you get less of an experience..... same with flight sims, no joystick? well you get crappy controls then....

for some reason people dont consider this with FF14. they think "ITS AN MMO IT SHOULD WORK WITH KB/MOUSE RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE."

guess what people, use a gamepad. all of your problems will be solved....

Sure, that's why there are many other complaints people are listing, as to why they won't be playing.  That is just the most obvious one.

The main reason, is because it lacks any depth and content.  Other than the story arc, you can grind and even that is restricted.

Well, this is merely ONE of the DOZENS of reasons for the plunge.

    Here are some examples:

    • the broken launcher, creating mistrust

    • the menu system, which is labor-intensive and designed for compatibility with a gamepad setup

    • the quest system = grind

    • the realization that since you are not a single class you are not anything special but rather just identical to everyone else

    • the scenery is bland

    • the map ui is not functional

    • the chat system is not sociable

    • graphics tear alot and no object shadows

    • targetting system is a disaster

    • turn based combat is dated

Will they have this kind of info on the box:

    "Requires gamepad" ?

Why would they have that, when it is clearly not true? Did FFXI have that on it's box? Because FFXI and FFXIV have nearly the same control schemes. People who played FFXI will play FFXIV the same way, with keyboard only. In the beta they don't have directional arrows set up to move camera, but they've already stated on the beta site that they are changing that for release.

  • mechtech256mechtech256 Member UncommonPosts: 206

The open beta has 8 guild leves available every 48 hours (more if you start switching classes), and a story line quest line available every 10 levels.

That's such a small amount of content. I'm assuming the full game will have more content, but seriously, an open beta in my experience has been a full blown test of all the content right before release. If they're holding back content, it should be made clearly apparent for the open beta testers. As of now, people are seeing FFXIV as a vast wasteland of a game, and rightfully so, the open beta is boring as hell.
