So, looking at the first two pages of posts (all of which I have read btw) I count 12 negative posts for the game, 10 more or less neutral posts, and one positive post. Keep in mind the contents of these threads also tend to contain quite a bit of negative reply's and well as some positive ones. The neutral posts were in general people asking questions about the game.
This could possibly mean a few things:
A: mmorpg forums are full of haters
B: I picked a bad day to pull the first two pages of the forums (in terms of finding mostly negative posts)
C: FFXIV truly is a "horribly terri-BAD" game?
Something else?

Its a great game if you like the style, its a horrible game if you dont like the style. This is not a mainstream MMO. Like its been said before this is a niche game, just like FFXI. That doesnt mean its a bad game, its just means its not for everyone, thus theres going to be a lot of people hating on it.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
People like to complain!
If I have an issue with something I am more likely to voice it out of anger.
But
If I am enjoying something.... Then I will be playing it not putting things on forums.

That's all forums are for now-a-days ... Bitching
My guess is the word "hater" is way overused. But it's true in rare ocasions, when we find a game we love to hate.
Mostly though, is just that some game generates hype before it has a chance to be mass-tested, and then we realise that the legend is greater than the game.
I think there are things that both sides can agree upon:
1. It is a nitch game however, not all those nitchers are goin to play cuase they need PC upgrading. So that leaves only a portion of the nitch players who will play. Perhaps a good thing considering the community.
2. The game runs on some PC's that do meet requirements and others have founde...difficulties in running the game. From weak PC's to internet connections there are...things that will take time to get the game running acceptably for players.
3. There are...fixs to come. Sometime...in the future.
4, You can not jump.
That said, I do not think MMORPG is full of haters, some trolls perhaps but a true hater would not spend the time investigating the game...they hate it. Bottom line, imo there are a comination of reasons why so many negative posts are found on this site. Perhaps it is best to seperate the facts from the feelings.
The problem is that FFXIV wasnt never meant to be a 'niche game', it was meant to compete with the big boys. This isnt Darkfall, where the niche game argument works.
As such, by their own standards, it seems to have failed.
To be fair. There is really only one big boy on the block and no one will ever be able to compete with him.
Hehe. Pretty much. >_<
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I was thinking about this game and MMOs in general as I uninstalled it last night.
I'd make a comparison to Shallow Hal. He had a hot chick, but she had something wrong with her toes. That completely ruined her for him.
FFXIV is pretty interesting. It's fugly toe for me is the laggy and unintuitive interface. No matter how much I want to like it, that toe keeps staring at me.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
People dont need rocket science to be able to see this game is really not very good, its not finished, its old concept, boring etc etc, ok fanboys say its beta and its only 10% of the game...
So 10 days from launch the game will be imba??
If 10% of the games content is so horrid why will the other 90% be imba?
An open beta game should be ready and fully working, just some minor lag, connection , workload tweaks to be solved thats it...
