Not that this should mean anything at all when it comes to the donations, but I highly doubt he made a deliberate decision to put his side of the vehicle directly in the path of the oncoming vehicle in any attempt at strategy or thoughts of sacrifice. There really are people who have died deliberately sacrificing themselves for others(soldiers jumping on grenades and so forth) so lumping all this stuff together sort of takes away from the true stories of sacrifice.

Its totally unbeleivable.  Anyones who has ever been in a car accident can tell you there isn't time to calculate for the other car flying over a median and plan out where you want it to hit you.  And where does the idea that he heroicly planed it come from?  He's dead, so I doubt anyone could know about his elaborate split second strategy.  He swerved in reaction, someone made some story up and now this guys a "hero"?  Give me a break.

In other news, I kept my sidewalk ice free last winter and saved dozens of mail delivery peoples lives.  Wheres my cut?

My first thought was "Why didn't you just swerve out of the way?" If you had time to figure out how to get it to hit your side of the car then you should have been able to avoid it altogether. I didn't want to sound like a jerk though. The guy did lose his life and if it makes people feel better to call him a hero then so be it. He is a hero.

the way I understood the story, is that an oncoming vehicle basically lost control because the driver handed steering over to the passenger and crossed a median into oncoming traffic, more specifically the developer 'hero".

Make long stories short, if someone crosses a median and is heading toward you then naturally your going to steer the car away from the oncoming vehicle to the right which in turn makes the driver side exposed.  Theres nothing calculated about it.  His other option was to steer the car to the left onto more oncoming traffic and directly toward the oncoming car.

I do feel bad for the guys wife though.  I cant begin to imagine the pain she must be going through, and to chime in on what seabass said, Im sure no matter what happened in that situation he would always be his wife's hero.
