How many are purchasing this game just because there's nothing else coming up in the immediate futur

epoqepoq Member UncommonPosts: 394

I definitely feel like I see a majority of negative reviews and comments about this game.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  Most of the threads on this forum are mainly negative with a few positive ones thrown in from time to time.  I just think it's funny because Square Enix had a perfect opportunity to make some serious cash and gain a large customer base while there isn't much coming up within the next couple of months.  Had they done a better overall job, perhaps things would be a bit different.  I have seen a lack of advertisement and PR/media buzz about this game, in comparison to what I've seen from other games in the past that ended up being successful.  Open beta was a mess, I think most people can agree with this.  I was stuck looking for answers trying to figure out where the story arc was, if/why they removed it from the game in OB, wondering what the direction of the game would be.  There are so many things wrong with the UI and the sluggish performance of menial tasks in this game, that it is seriously hard to play.  It's not a hard game, but it's hard to keep up the patience to go through multiple menus to do something that should be able to be double clicked and executed immediately.  The bazaar system is primitive, it made me think of Everquest's Luclin expansion where they introduced the Bazaar, except there are a lot more vendors to sort though on this game, and it's a timesink that makes me not even want to go attempt to try to purchase items through player vendors.  Class roles are relatively undefined, healers don't receive any sort of incentive to heal, as they do not gain EXP or class points for their buffs and heals, leaving me not wanting to play a Disciple of Magic class.

I feel like a number of people will be purchasing this game simply due to the fact that if you arent having fun or subscribed to any current MMOs, this game can be a holdover until something better.  Square had a great opportunity to capitalize on the MMO and FF player community, but I would call their incomplete game "botched" at best.  If what we saw in Open Beta is what is going to be released, with the exception of the story arc not being present, and only a small portion of the games weapons and armor in the test, then they have a LOT to do to get this game up to it's full potential.  I can't justify purchasing a game to be a pay-to-play tester for Square Enix to basically give them feedback that they may or may not listen to and allow them to release a more polished and refined game to console players down the road.

I feel even worse because even though I have not played WoW since 2006, dare I say I might play Cataclysm until a new game like TERA, Rift, or Star Wars TOR are released?  It's a sad day for me when it comes to that!  I've just had my fill of most other games out there and at this point I can't see the point in giving my money to Square to be overly frustrated in a game that should be more streamlined and easier to navigate through.

And that is my rant!

So... they chose a great time to release it.

  • maskedtearsmaskedtears Member UncommonPosts: 345

I don't think I can agree. This game is coming near the end of the year and a lot of people are trying to hussle to get things together. I honestly don't find myself with so little money that I'd spend it on an MMO I didn't like. Plus there are plenty of regular game releases going on that could occupy the time much better than playing an MMO one didn't like very much to begin with.

I hear a lot more people deciding to wait for things to get better before they invest then people throwing down money just because there isn't anything better. But that's just what I've observed.

You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

I almost did.  I read there is a miracle patch but they arent putting it in till release day.

  • NesrieNesrie Member Posts: 648

I am not so starved for games that I want to purchase games that I don't necessarily like to "hold me over". I know people who do this, and that's fine for them. It's just not my methodology.

parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.

If I hadn't played the beta and gotten royally pissed off at the clunky UI and poor engine performance I'd probably be picking this one up and I'd still play if it showed up in my mail box along with a compatable PC controller that rocked and box of condoms.

That's another thing that ticked me off.  Gamepad.  Everyone's saying use a gamepad, it's easier, it's not as laggy, etc.  Am I the only person thinking "Well you released this game for PC FIRST...sooo is there a reason you didn't incorporate the keyboard and mouse to the most fluid form of use before you went to the console controller?"  There's no reason the game shouldn't run on par with a gamepad.  Not to mention, I'm a PC MMO player, the gamepad is not my style, especially for this kind of game.  Why should I have to spend extra money on hardware I don't want to use to have a better gameplay experience?

Sounds pretty desperate to me. Along with ignorance, I would say it's the worst reason to buy a video game ever.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

    Oh, but you don't.

But if there really are evil Japanese holding a gun at your head, forcing you to buy this game as soon as it is released, do tell me. In PM if you're worried about your safety. We'll work something out.

Originally, a long time ago, I was looking forward to playing this on PS3. But since that got delayed by 6 months, there will be a plethora of MMOs (hopefully Rift, GW2 and/or TOR), coming out at that time. And after all I've learned about this game and it's elitist community...no I will not be playing.

(Now I wait for the"good we don't need you" post to prove my point.)

Either go buy a controller and play the game or don't, who cares? Not me. Hell, you "can" play the game without a controller but I have no idea why you'd want to unless you're too poor to buy one. And, in that case, you probably shouldn't be playing computer games and should be out looking for a job.

To answer the question as stated in the thread title, not I.

The reason for my purchase is the vast amount of freedom in the game compared to any other PVE mmorpg on the market.  FFXIV really hit the nail on the head with all the jobs/professtions/etc and to think you can do them all!  Liked the Open Beta and can't wait for Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

I feel offended that you called me elitist. Doesn't that make you a meanie? Enjoy the other games, just please refrain from making threads here about how they are sooo much better when you play and enjoy them. I'm sure you will want to enjoy your game and not post about how much you enjoy your game. If you catch my drift.

Seriously? How many other MMO's have you played with a playstation controller?  Now compare this to how many you've played with a keyboard and mouse.  If Square allows keyboard and mouse for their game, why wouldn't they optimize it to work just as well as a gamepad?  I'm just saying it doesn't make much sense to me.  I don't want to use a gamepad.  I'm playing this game on the PC, not the PS3.

There's no reason to assume they won't.

It's just not going to happen at the time of release.

If that is unacceptable, don't buy this game. Don't play it.

When said optimization has happened, pick it up instead. Or don't. Who cares.

And all the people telling me I was an idiot for objecting to the 1 character restriction were not "meanies"? Telling me they didn't need or want me were not "meanies"? Sorry but I think the FF community is insular and unwelcoming, if you prefer that to "elitist". My opinion from the responses I've gotten from FF fans.

My point was that you are painting us all with the same brush. That's like saying that all Japanese people are polite. Or that all gamers are older white males. I'm not telling you to stay, because obviously you wouldn't be happy here. I'm just saying that trying to bait people into doing what you want to prove your point is a little on the manipulative and rude side. No one is saying anything negative or rude  to you now so there is no need to be negative or rude to others.

If GW2 was coming out within a couple months of FFXIV, I just have to believe that FFXIV would be a collosal failure. Out of 34 people that I play MMO's with from old guilds, RL friends, etc, all of us tried FFXIV. 28 of them decided against playing it at launch or until multiple issue are fixed, 17 of which were FFXI players. The other 6 admitted the only reason they are going to play is they are desperate for something to keep them busy. I'm not saying that the people I know represent the general concensus, but we are a bunch of people that just like to have fun, and I dont think I ever remember being so hyped for a game and then being so let down.

  • KroxMalonKroxMalon Member UncommonPosts: 608

The negative posts are as common as mmos releasing, its just the way it is. Once FF has released and all goes quiet, forum fans will hop onboard the next  hype train for titles such as Tera and Star Wars and Guildwars2 etc. And with the hype and betas will come negative posts again. Its just the way it is.. shame really.

Its kind of difficult to discuss a "community" without lumping everyone together in one pot isnt it?  By definition a community is everyone alltogether.
