I always enjoyed platformers but they seem to be few and far between now So, I guess RPG's with an action game like GOW now and then for a change of pace.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Roleplaygames with depth. I love Gothic/Risen (played them to death) and Fallout 3. Also Baldurs Gate 1/2 (but I prefer the first person camera). Might and Magic 4-9, etc.
RPGs, followed by turn based strategy, Action and then RTS games.
As an old pen and paper roleplayer I like games that at least offers a little bit of the roleplaying experience. It isn't as great as pen and paper but I have been working constant nightshift for 7 1/2 years now so I havn't had the time for P&P... I will quit in 2 months however so that might change.
Computer games are great since you can play them anytime and if you choose so for a short time. I like to play online, network or solo games, they are all fun in different ways.
What is commonly called RPGs but probably falls under many different sub generes of them.
I would sat FPS and Sports games have both been my favorite at different points in time; they are probably tied for a close second right now.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
My favorite genre is the Single player RPG genre. The free roam kind ala Elder scrolls, Gothic, Fallout 3.
Second is Shmups, 2D Vertical (and Side scroll) shooters ala R-Type, DoDonPachi, ESPGaluda II, Deathsmiles...
Third would be FPS shooters Halo, BC2, TF2, CS
Just my opinion of course.
Edit: Action games like Ninja gaiden, Devil May cry and 3rd person shooters like Gears of war deserve an honorable mention. Somewhere down the list behind Mobile tower defense games (plants vs zombies) is were mmorpgs are for me lol.
i also think that rpg genre is most fun, although i myself am pvper and love competition. but the adventures i lived through in FF, Fallout or M&M series are unforgettable
Playing: Rohan Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos
I always enjoyed platformers but they seem to be few and far between now So, I guess RPG's with an action game like GOW now and then for a change of pace.
To play good platformers (the 2D kind) you need to own handheld devices. DS and Mobile platforms have some great games. Just picked up Mega man II, Hoggy and The incident for my iphone... awesome games.
By Game Genres I refer to Action, Adventure, strategy, MMORPG, RPG, simulation, casual, ...
You just named the genre's I like to play, though I am not really into casual games, but did enjoy a few years ago games like Peggles So I aint into just one genre or feel one genre is better then the other, aslong what ever genre I am playing is delivering what I expect from the genre is is appealing to me I will play it. Kinda the reason why I consider myself a gamer and not just a Genre "X" player. ("X" stands for just one type of genre)
RPG on consoles:) I wish i could find a new Space type game, (Loved Earth & Beyond)) Too much ganking and bother in EVE, wish i liked it a bit more would play it again.
To the point i do not even like to read too much info on on-line games before release, so i will not be disapointed.
For last couple years, i have been playing mainly casual games, Browser type games. Have not found a on-line game i liked for more than a month or 2.
mmorpg's of course. I hardly touch my xbox or my iphone for gaming. but if you are talking about genre in the other way it could be use in this convo, well I'd have to say Fantasy takes the top notch for me and it's followed closely by sci-fi particularly post apocalypse and super hero sub genres.
I have not seen a unified description of genres of games or sub-genres of MMORPG. Different sites have different classifications. Considering that Anime-themed is my favorite MMORPG sub-genre.
I never really had a (best) genre but my favorite genre's are 4x Strategy and Simulation games where I am in complete control of my gameplay and the replay value is extremely high due to ambitious modding communities over the years releasing everything from new textures, maps, campaigns, or total conversions especially Star Trek , Star Wars, and BSG mods , from Elite, Battlecruiser 3k, Sins of a Solar Empire, Galactic Civilization Series, these game stand in high regard and high replay value.
The RTS Genre is another great example of what the modding community can do with a game and extend the life of certain games like Star Wars Empire At War, or C&C.
Still waiting on a AAA studio that will make a MMO that lets players create their own content for the game and possibily let players create their own features.
right now i'm really liking Darksiders its alot of fun, just got it from steam last night. knew it looked good but the deciding factor was the fact that Joe Madureira the old artist from Marvel worked on it and i really enjoy his art style, deffinitly shows through out the game. what ever Genre you'd call that, like the Legacy of Kain series. action/rpg with puzzles with a very good story.
edit: got to one part in the game that reminded so much of that old Panzer Dragon for Sega Saturn, it played exactly like it, except i was riding on a griffon with a lance that shot magic homing missles shooting at Angels. holding down the "charging button" and running the target across mobs as i flew to mark them then letting off the button firing as many homing magic shots at as many targets as i can see lol
I'll play almost anything except sports games, but aside from MMORPG's which I spend the most time on sort of by default the two games that stand out for me lately are (FPS) shooter based with rpg elements, or rpg's with shooter elements, kind of a toss up which is labelled first.
I found both mass effect 2 and borderlands stupidly addicting with extremely high production values in gameplay as well as supporting elements. So based on that, my favorite genre. I kind of don't like using the assumption of "best" because genres simply imply a style of gameplay and say nothing to its quality.
The best genre is probably going to be the one with the strongest companies operating in it. Quality titles draw a lot of players, even those who wouldn't normally play that genre. Its popularity doesn't make it the best anymore than a genre alone can determine the best, however it would likely have some of the best individual games for a period of time.

I am not sure the products of the strongest companies reflects what they think it is current best genre rather it may be what they used to think it will be the best in future. In the same aspect what they have under development may reflect their idea better. I think in that perspective MMORPG and Social gaming will win the race.
For me, it's RPG. Most of the games I've played in PS1 and PS2 are RPGs like Final Fantasy, Suikoden, and a lot more. For me this is the best since it gives you some sort of accomplishment. This is because there really is a progression either in the story or in your level. Unlike fighting or sports games where you play and then that's it. This is the reason why I get bored with these games once I finished the story mode and/or unlocked the hidden characters. There's nothing more to finish. The accomplishment is even more rewarding once you finish the game and see the ending. It does not matter whether the ending is impressive or not (although a good ending is definitely preferable), but the experience in finishing it is great in itself. The story is also usually very compelling.

I like runescape and dragon's call. They're browser games. The reason: Game is free and don't need to download.

Fantasy games because it's pretty much the reason why I play games. It's fun to make believe in games and think that your character is actually you.

Personal preference would be for single player RTS RPGs that do not cost $50-60 and are finished in a weekend.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
