yeah FFXI when i tried it years ago, the controls was just retarded to even move around, i think it was the number pad keys to move ot something? and at the time (as far as i could see) there was no way to change them. i wished i had a controller at the time to give it a try back then. because i seriously played maybe 5 min if that before i got frustrated and logged out and uninstalled. wich came back to bite me in the ass later because i found out you could only get into your account to close it through that launcher. you couldn't do it at all one thier site.
i don't like click to move games either, i've played them but not for very long.
Totally agree regarding FFXI.

I game with a laptop and as such use a touch pad to play. So games like Vindicitus that have wide turns and especially mouse turn I usually have to hang it up on.
Cool icon. Did ya draw that yourself? ^^

Of course. Controls are extremely important. Since you didn't specify TYPE of game, I will say I have put down numerous single-player games due to awful controls. Most MMO's know better (most). GW I actually could not bring myself to play because of the "on rails" feel of movement. It annoyed the shit out of me not to be able to hop over that hillock, but have to find the circuitous path around it.
I haven't found an MMO with controls that I couldn't master. I usually quit MMOs if the community sucks. That is precisely why I bailed on WoW and started with Ryzom. The community of Ryzom was better.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
I also think this is the NUMBER ONE reason World of Warcraft is as popular as it is. The controls in that game are the smoothest and most interactive, visceral of any MMO I've ever played making it a sweet ride, at least control wise.
Totally agree with this statement, I believe that is one of the biggest reasons most post WoW mmo's haven't done that great in comparison.
This is the biggest reason I've stuck to WoW for so long. The controls are so responsive and smooth that I actually feel like I AM the character, not playing a character. I just wish other MMOs could do it as well as Blizz has (controls, nothing else >.<).
Nope, controls have never been a deciding factor for me. Then again I'm a quick learner, I adapt and as long as I'm having fun I'll play. When I take a break from one game to play another, I find myself pressing keys that have no binding it's pretty funny sometimes. I simply work to break the habbit and it only takes a few minutes then I'm back into the game. Then again if I wasn't a dedicated gamer and quit games because of the controls I would have missed out on a LOT of gaming.

QFT, it's amazing how many developers dont get it ... tbh i only realized how good controls and customization compared to other mmos in wow is, after i stopped to play it.
Lotro. Felt like my character was sliding instead of running and it drove me crazy. Ironically I played FFXI for a couple years which is about as bad as controls get. It was my first MMO, and first game I played on PC at all so I had no idea how bad they were until I got used to standard PC controls. I've tried going back to FFXI a couple times and it was just so unbearable I couldn't last even a couple days.
FFXIV seems like it will be the new standard of bad controls and UI.
Oh, and a very close call was Neverwinter Nights 2.
No MMO, but then I havent played that many (only Lineage 2 and Vanguard, well and if you consider Guild Wars a MMO, I played that one too, but man was it boring).

I am extremely adaptable and willing to stick it out until I am comfortable in a game, but the controls of FFXI were a major factor in why I didn't stick around. I felt like it could have been better adapted to keyboard and mouse. (Yes, I know there were ways to make it work better, but that wasn't the ONLY reason I didn't stick around.)

Same here.
I've never quit a game because of controls, I just consider it as one of the things I have to adapt to in a new game, sometimes it takes me a little time of adjustment and after that I managed to make it work for me and barely notice the difference anymore.
I rarely allow it to be a hindrance in me enjoying the other aspects of a game.

Yes I have lol. name? Erebus: Travia Reborn. The controls for closed beta testing were very old fashioned and there was only one camera view which made things difficult to move around. I'm hoping obt/release will bring more options because I think alot of players complained about it
Ahh, I know what you are talking about. Although it's not a problem at all, it's the style of the game to be like that, top-down camera and movement by mouse. It's called ISOMETRIC. And it's not old fashioned. Just not used a lot in the industry. Diablo 3 will release in 2011 and although not one of them, I know that many people are waiting.
Yep, I didn't last long on the Darkfall trial because the panning out from first to third person, and back again, just to loot and talk to NPCs drove me crazy. That's a game that needs to figure out what it wants to be, and just do it.

Kinda, Sword of the new world had terrible controls, no jumping and pretty lame combat, left it because of that even if I like the team and art of the game (however are customization options not something for that game).
But the controls have to be pretty awful to be the main reason I quit a game.
Yes, additionally I won't play games who don't have mouselook toggle option. Example of this is LOTRO. As mush as I would love to play it, can't get into it due to the lack of this option.

Yes FFXI is one.
Bwuahahaha... well ever since FF14 I guess more than before, lulz.

The main thing that drove me away from LOTRO besides the limited PVP. Combat delay ! ! ! They did almost everything right except that horrible combat.
Yeah any game I cant play with a controller = unistall... I just really hate keyboards and mice...
Playing: Ever quest 2
Played: MS,GW,EVE,LOTRO,WoW,Allods,Aion, CO,CoH,CoV,TQ Digital games, Darkfall,AoC,RS2.

Its painful enough to do normal desktop with it.
