Why the hell would you keep a monster in the house in the first place??
I totally agree with this. I have seen or heard of too many incidents where house hold animals, typically dogs, have attacked their owners or even their children. One woman had her face completely ripped off in her sleep.
You can't really trust a dog to always do the right thing. After all they are animals and they should be in the wild somewhere. Not in the house. At least keep them in the backyard and AWAY from small children, especially if they are large dogs. I have a dog myself. A husky, nicest dog ever, but I don't trust it around children. He is too playful.
Maybe someone should ask that games developer where and how they obtained the sound effects?
Dog's sort of speak their own language, much like any other species of animal, different tones and variations of a noise an animal makes can mean different things, such as distress call for instance. If that sound that set the dog off happened to be recorded by some means of force, then that dog may have just picked up on that and went into protect or attack mode.
Bigger breeds are typically more protective too, doesn't sound like that theory could be too far 'fetched' (lol..).
...but the sound effects were probably in Dog-japanese. While possible, I think it is less likely the British Mastiff would have known japanese.

I dont blame the dog one bit. Nintendogs pisses me off too. Your going to play with a damn digital dog, when you have a real attention starved dog right there? It like those losers who play EA sports games when they own a damn football and can just go outside with it and do the real thing. If i could go outside and engage in swordplay without the cops showing up and hauling me off, your damn right i'd be out there having some fun with blades and armour(im not suicidal) but i cant so i have to play the video game version instead. Sports gamers and nintendog players have no such excuse. Same with farmville players, could be out planting a garden in a flower bed, or backyard but instead there on the computer simulating growing crap. I hope a pack of rabid mastiff's maul these people to death while there sitting on the toilet. /end rant (for now).

"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
They put the dog down. So there's no way to determine if the barking caused the attack by exposing the dog to the barking again to see how it reacts. Also, apparantly, the barking didn't cause the other dog to attack the child, apparantly, the other dog assisted in getting the attacking dog away from the kid. This one doesn't sound like good lawsuit material to me.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

seriously dude wth (technicly is a group as i count northern ireland to be seperate) and uhm wasnt realy concerned with the specifics tho and in what way did i ramble? the definition of which is to (for ur purposes at least) to talk and write in a discursive, aimless way.
besides i dont care about current world politics that much i lost interest years ago. not my cup of tea (besides not like they teach who is part of the UK in highschool at least not anymore if they ever did).
p.s. i have to say even this site being what it is i wouldnt have expected such discourteous language for something so minor which was also unoffensive.
I suspect the game and the attack were completely unrelated. More likely that there was a problem with the animal or a history of abuse. I'm a bit surprised by the number of posters who characterized dogs as "monsters", or as very dangerous beasts. Dogs may occassionally warn an owner with a snap or growl when certain actions or behaviors alarm or scare them, but it is extremely rare for a dog to attack its owner or family, unless there is abuse or disease.

Haha, I agree.
heh i agree too
on a side note its not legal to engage in swordplay ?? (well obviously im talking about outside in ur backyard or something)
These incidents are enough to convince me that playing games is evil, like playing Santana backwards, it brings the evil out in both human and animals. See what we are teaclhing children today? First its the Nintendogs eating little girls next....humans will start biteing people when walking by someone who is playing.

I... live in southern california. Many of us dont have backyards and even when you do what you do on your own property is still grounds for arrest. Of course thats assuming the state hasn't immenant domained your property in the first place.

well its just that sometimes if its on your property something is not illegal such as drinking yet if you were to walk down the street with a bottle of jack daniels... well you get the idea.
(live in Southern california too and it must be a specific area with no backyards or something cuz everywere i have lived down here has a backyard well just about even if its only like 5 x 5 feet. but this is off topic heh talking about laws and property on a mmo forum site of all places lolz)
Nailzzzz comes close, but I can't wait for the real PETA nuts to get in here and cry that the dog shouldn't have been put down. This whole story is... weird, to say the least. I'll just sum up my opinion with:
a) Parents should take the blame more than the game or the dog.
b) A dog is an animal, and people come first. Always. It bit the girl's lip off and probably would've ripped off her entire face if the other dog/friends hadn't gotten it off of her. Better safe than sorry, which in this case means putting it to sleep.
c) The sounds from a DS aren't really that realistic; something on TV is much more believable. Maybe she had the volume up all the way... and had huge speakers amplifying the bark. Why hasn't this happened in more homes if the game is to blame? When did Nintendogs come out? At least a few years ago. This is the first incident to be reported in all that time? No, the game isn't at fault here.
I suspect the game and the attack were completely unrelated. More likely that there was a problem with the animal or a history of abuse. I thought of this too but it is a sad fact there are people who think this way (let's not forget people show more monstrosity). The dog could have been pounded for life or rehabilitated by a professional and if successful could be matched to owners who don't have children. It is not a wild rabid animal as some people here make it out to be. It is fear of the unknown, they simply don't know enough, don't even bother because it is rather easy to put an end to the dog.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
I think the kid probably annoyed the dog and it bit off his face. Learning to control animals and how kids interact with them is a parental issue and nothing to do with the game company. Sad story though, hope the kid isn't permanently disfigured.
Having been around dogs all my life (including mastiffs) and many different dogs at that. I have never seen a dog attack a person from barking noises whether on TV or on a game. I think the people involved just decided to try to get some money out of the situation so they made this crap up.
It was a freak accident. These guys will find any reason to point a finger at the video game hobby. It's complete bullshit. With that said I feel for the child but there is nothing anyone could have done.
This is my thought as well.
The Media just loves to come up with dirt on games.
" Ms Melville was unavailable for comment, but it is understood that she told police that Megan may have kicked Saracen and that is why he attacked her. "
is true.
Either way, my opinion on this is rather Neutral. I mean I understand the idea that it could set the dog off. But do we have any proof except that one coincidence? Maybe the dog heard the sound differently in it's sleep.
However. It's probably no the game's fault. But if the kid did provoke the dog, I don't think the other dog would have helped her. But it did.
I'm not a fan of killing anything unneededly and thought putting it to sleep may have been too much unless they had to, to save the child or something.
It could have been prevented if the cause was bad parenting or dog owning. Who knows what really caused the dog to do that.
Maybe the Dog actually did go "mad" or whatsoever... In which case I see why they should put it to sleep.
I wish people wouldn't blame things at first sight without more knowledge about this. But no, It's just a child and a dog let's just end it quickly in the way that hurts "us" the least.
As an owner of a 90-pound German Shepard, it's one of the most basic rules you learn when you have a large dog. Little kids do not get to play with or near large dogs.
A mastiff is much larger than a Shepard and I wouldn't let a 9 year old near my dog because of this basic rule, it's very dangerous because even if the dog doesn't mean to seriously hurt a child, it definitely has the power to.
While I cannot prove the game's barking did nothing, I am tired of parents using games/music/movies as a scapegoat for their own liability when bad things happen. Parents constantly refuse to take responsibility for their own mistakes.
Nailzzzz comes close, but I can't wait for the real PETA nuts to get in here and cry that the dog shouldn't have been put down. This whole story is... weird, to say the least. I'll just sum up my opinion with:

That is all.
I resent the implication that just because im capable of feeling compassion for things that are not of my species, i should have my viewpoint related to rank hypocrites who themselves kill most of the animals they supposedly save.
a) So you are advocating for the deaths of the parents. Or do you simply seperate blame and responcibility?
b) By this logic we should no longer have german people alive since they supported open warfare killing thousands and genocide and therefore should have been put down. Or do you believe that a dog is lower than a such a person by virtue of it being a dog? Sorry. I cant put a dog who may have very well been acting in its own defense in the same moral category as people willing to see others killed for there own self interest. There are too many other options for us as moral agents to exercise that should preclude death. Its a real shame that we view death as the solution to inconveniences. The only circumstance that should lead to death is unprovoked malice. We have reason to believe the animal may have been provoked.
For those outside the UK, the Daily Mail is infamous for deliberately trying to make their readers angry at something and throw the blame around. As another poster pointed out, the mother conceded that the child may have kicked the dog, so I seriously doubt the parents or any of those involved actually hold the game responsible to the degree that the article suggests... it's all too easy for the media to put their own spin on a story. They're just trying to provoke a reaction.
Their vendetta against video games is truly frustrating though.

Animals don't care if you think they're cute and cuddly. They will rip your face off.
It's also funny how they are blaming the game and yet... executed their dog.
